Detailed Reviews
We've faithfully stayed at Saddle and Sulky annually 14 times, when our family attended WOMAD. And it really ticks our boxes. We stay in the corner suite, which has a bedroom with double and single bed, plus a large open plan kitchen/ living with a double bed, a single bed and and sofa bed. Being adjacent to the racecourse, and a 10 minute walk through the racecourse to Pukekura Park (accessing alongside the Brooklands Bowl) is very convenient, so if we need to come 'home' to refresh this is no drama. The beds are comfy and linen crisp. The kitchen is well set up. And plenty of towels provided each day. And good onsite carparking provided.

We had a weekend stay at the motel and it was so great to be able to wake feeling refreshed after sleeping on a comfortable bed. We had a room with a kitchen and ample space for us as well as spare beds. Our towels were refreshed daily, the room was so clean and smelt fresh. Proprietors were very friendly.

Tony the host arranged flowers for the upgraded room and was very helpful to suggest places to eat and visit. Our second visit to this motel with a ten-year gap. New Plymouth and Taranaki were lovely to see again. Lots of excellent places to eat. Great value for money. The shower was the only downside, which was limited in hot water. Weather variable, but it's winter , what else to say

A nice welcome and great location. The decor is a little tired but that's what you get for the price which was good value. Cleaning was ok. Oven knobs and around bathroom taps need a bit of a deep clean but I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Rooms are serviced daily and cookies and plunger coffee provided which is awesome!

Saddle and Sulky is handy to a number of places - we have familty in Stratford and with it being at the entrance to New Plymouth from the south, it was handy for us. Its also good if you are wanting to visit the North Taranaki Visitor Centre on the mountain (about a 20 minute drive?) as well as about a 5 minutes drive into town. Thats the best thing about New Plymouth - everything is about 5 to 10 minutes away!!
In terms of the motel, it is a little tired. I remember when it was built in the early 1990's and I don't think it has been updated. In saying that, the place was clean and tidy. It is right on Coronation Ave which is the main road into town from the south and I was surprised at how little road noise there was!
And they had the full compliment of Sky TV! Most places say they have Sky and only have six or so selected channels, but our room had a sky box (recorder even so I could watch the All Black later on) .

Needed something that wasnt too expensive or too far away from the city centre. Unfortunately, the downside of the room was the windows and sills were dirty, the stove top and oven was not cleaned and bits of rubbish on the floor. Rather disappointed with this as it was not expected. Otherwise the venue was handy to get to places.

Good location, Tony was very helpful and the price is right for the dated rooms. Even though the motel is on a busy road, the rooms were relatively quiet and we didn't hear much traffic noise. Would stay here again.

The host are charming but the room was much less than expected.
It is extremely dated which doesn't automatically make it bad, but it was not as clean as I would have liked.
The carpets are stained, window ledges, and curtains weren't adhered securely.

The location was spot on - finding the place, proximity to the city, the event we were attending and exiting New Plymouth. It was value for money, facilities were good and the bed was comfortable. A couple of concerns was that the shower mixer didn't work so well and took a lot of adjusting to get appropriate temperature. The room was not that clean though tidy.

Pleasant man in reception, very helpful giving directions. Handy to the attractions. Clean rooms. Enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. Yapping dogs in one room were a nuisance but minor nuisance.
