Detailed Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this super cute hostel. Bastin gave me a warm welcome, showed me around the place and spent a long time answering all of my questions and recommending things to do. Initially, I had only planned to spend one night in Rotorua. After speaking with Bastin about the activities and places he recommended, I changed my plans, cancelled my reservation at Hot Water Beach and spent two nights here. I paid for sharing a room with two bunks, four beds. I was surprised that I had the room to myself for both nights. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful cat, Blakely, who always enjoyed being petted. Bailey also helped me recommend places based on my interest and amount of money I had to spend on my last day. She even shared some milk for my hot tea with me. This is the only hostel that I stayed at who provided laundry detergent to wash your clothes. You pay to use the washer and dryer and they have powdered laundry detergent available. All of their staff was very helpful and friendly with anything you need. I highly recommend staying here when in Rotorua.

Stayed there in April 2013
Nice hostel near the Government Gardens as well as the Polynesian Spa, and only about 5 minutes away from the Rotorua I-site.
They have some lovely walks not too far away as well.
Crash Palace itself is well equipped with 2 kitchens on each level that are very nice for cooking. The toilets and bathrooms are ok as well.
I was staying in a 4 share female dorm that was quite nice, altrough the beds were a bit squeaky. Even though they have a DJ desk downstairs, you don't hear too much of it when the doors are closed.
Chris and Max were helpful, nice and could answer any questions we had (and we had a lot sometimes... :-) ) Thanks guys!
We got some discount vouchers for the Te Puia from them, which was really nice.
The lounge is comfy and they have a good movie selection, as well as a pool table there.
What's also very convenient is that New World is only about 3 minutes away, so really good for stocking up.
All in all, I'd definitely reommend this hostel!

It currently does not exist. We booked and it took our money. Luckily, we had seen the reviews on here so we knew something shady was going on. When we got there, a nice man and his daughter were living in the hostel and they said it has been under renovation for quite some time. We never received any email correspondence warning us of this. He did offer us a refund and we got this within the week, but it was a major inconvenience having to find new accommodation at the last minute.

I would highly recommend this hostel to any budget traveler in Rotorua. I paid just $10 for a 10 bed dorm. When booking this hostel, I figured this was pretty risky as I have never paid less than $19 for a hostel. The room was spacious, had plenty of outlets for everyone in the room, beds were comfy, showers were very nice, bathrooms clean, friendly staff, free wifi (that actually works all throughout the hostel),I mean I could go on and on. I was there on a Thursday and they had free popcorn and hot chocolate for a movie night. The next night there was free spaghetti!! Stay at this hostel, they give you great discounts on activities in the area (including Hobbiton), and the value seems so much greater than what you pay for!

Thanks for highlighting that the $10 price is not a reflection of the quality you receive. Yes we have $10 beds (must be quick) yes we are clean and warm and friendly and yes this the cheapest place for backpackers to stay in NZ. Not only that, as you have also pointed out we will beat any price in town on activities to make sure you get the best deal possible during your stay with us. Thanks for coming to stay with us and taking that risk!~! We appreciate the kind words and wish you all the best on your travels.

so far in my trip I have stayed in a few hostels around NZ and I can honestly say that Crash Palace has been the best by far and I have been here for less than a day! Karine and Minka are so friendly and welcoming, super helpful and always smiling. The whole set up in the hostel makes you feel really welcome which makes a huge difference when you are travelling by yourself. Thank you.
For travellers who want to know about facilities there is free wifi, a free pool table, free spices and oil, free rice and pasta and lots on in the evenings. The beds are comfy, rooms and bathrooms clean, good kitchen, big lounge area, hot tub.....I think you would struggle to find anything missing!

I needed a place to sleep for entire 2 weeks and was really lucky to find this hostel. The beds are comfortable, rooms nice and clean. For some of the rooms, the bathroom might be a little far away, the room I had was however pretty close. Also I had special requests for cancellations/extensions in my bookings and they were really helpful and made everything possible. Over all, friendly staff, who would also arrange bookings with tour operators for you. I can definitely recommend Crash palace and would stay there again :-)

Crash was amazing. The owner and staff are friendly, welcoming and informative. The beds were comfy, the Wi-Fi great, and a HOT TUB. What hostel as cheap as this comes with a hot tub. Great location and fun nightly events. Would definitely stay again.

My friend and I stayed in a shared room at Crash Palace Rotorua. Upon arrival we had to sign a document of rules, including no alcohol being consumed other then what was in their bar. Although the drinks at the bar were relatively cheap and the staff were very helpful. Upon arrival you also had to leave some sort of ID at the door which was a bit worrying, you get this back when you leave and give back your key but was still a bit weird as we have never had to do that before.
The place smelt but mostly from the Sulfur air that surrounds Rotorua.
There is a spa available but only between certain times and most of the time people were in it so didn’t get a chance to use it even after being there for a few days.
The place is very close to food/shopping areas with most places walking distance if not a short drive. Great to go there Thursday nights for a food market filled with vans and food trucks that were amazing. It was the perfect place to stay for adrenaline seeking things to do as everything was close by. Also free parking all around the location.
Cleaning services are great, for $10 you can have everything washed, dryed and folded for you.
Place is very secure with lockers in the room and cameras in the hallways.
The showers in the place weren’t ideal with no where to put your shower gel/shampoo anywhere. Could use a hanging device/shelf of some kind.
Free wifi was very fast and reliable.
All in all pretty good experience with a few minor things that can be easily fixed.

Ok so the ID thing seems to puzzle everyone ID being left with us allows us to know who is in the hostel if we evacuate due to earthquake fire etc you are visiting a volcanic area. Also allowing us to know who is in room with you at all times therefore reducing the risk to you having someone walk off with all your stuff.(which has happened twice in 10 years. I kind of got sick of paying for young peoples things to be replaced. Renovations happening now so most of these issues will be sorted thanks for the review safe travels!
