We only stayed here for the night and to be honest it was not great. Firstly there was no room in the car park for a car and we had to leave it on the side of the road. Secondly the hotel room had lots of things wrong with it see images attached. The whole place needs a complete facelift.
There was tape over the smoke alarm. The glass is in a room with dirty.
For some reason the fridge was balanced on a small table.
The toilet was dirty you had to see the bathroom taps to believe them. The only really good thing about this hotel was the location as it was not cheap I do not think that was Bay for money

The Four Canoes is nothing like the photos online. It is a total dump. It was nothing like what we expected. The buildings are old and tired, the hallway carpet is threadbare. The staff were friendly enough but I wouldn’t stay here again for the price. They shouldn’t be allowed to publish photos online that so badly misrepresent a place. I’m being generous and giving it 2 stars as the bed was comfortable and it wasn’t unclean. Just old and way overpriced.

We booked this hotel at the last minute and was a bit disappointed with the condition. The hotel is very run down and the pictures do not reflect the condition of the hotel.
BUT on saying that it was the cheapest price so we should not have expected better. That is why I am not marking it down more.

DON'T STAY HERE! I imagine people only stay here once after booking and realising that the pictures on booking.com and their website are FAR from reality (well that's us now).
From the boiling radiator in the room (unable to be control the temp) to the paperthin walls (we heard a family two doors down clear as day morning and evening), basically any expectation of this place being "nice" or considered a "hotel" is wrong!
Room: Uncomfortable wooden panels screwed into the walls to serve as "headboards", the furniture looked like it was grabbed off the side of the road and the tv had to be switched on by hand and the volume blasted each time you turned it on. Bedding consisted of scratchy sheets and a wool blanket placed in a duvet cover. The bathrooms have been upgraded (that was really the only saving grace).
Housekeeping consisted of new towels being placed and rubbish taken but they didnt make our bed (and they took our sign away).
"Buffet breakfast" is self-service toast and everyday cereals served in plastic bowls (not the eggs and bacon as advertised on booking.com). Small thermal pool is out of use and the large warm pool doesn't look blue and clear either. This was not as advertised. Disappointed. If you want to stay in a dive - this is the place for you.
Conveniently the concierge wasn't at the desk when we went to check out and saw another 4 cards left on the desk. Wanted to tell him our thoughts directly but I guess they've learnt to hide at check out time.
I think it's time you lost hotel out of your name and went back to a moter inn or hostel - that would suit you better and people's expectations would be lower.

I booked this 'hotel' on booking.com but when I arrived I was so disgusted with the lack of cleanliness and smell of the place, the fact that all the amenities listed were not available (all the swimming facilities were brown &, the gym was crap and unsafe) that I refused to stay and asked for my $ back but after getting the run around from all parties apparently there being 3 of them they would not give me a refund even though I did not stay due to poor standards and false advertising. I have stayed in many places around the world and the fact that this is my own country deeply saddens me. My advice to all is do not stay here, there's a reason it is so cheap.

We’ve stayed in some low budget places over the years but this one is the worst. Being old is no excuse for the lack of cleaning, filthy, cloudy pool and uncut grass. We asked Reception if they could do anything about the fridge in our room not working and they told us they were no longer providing fridges in the rooms because they break down, so have a communal fridge instead. Also no aircon or fan so sweltering in our ground floor apartment. You can do better spending your money elsewhere. This is one to consider only if you are out of other options.

Honestly, this was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. I should have read the reviews prior, doesnt look like the owner does either since nothing has changed. My room was disgusting. Our first room was damaged and had a hole in the glass door, a big hole. Dirty, No toilet paper, broken cupboards. Next room that was an "upgrade" was as bad as the first. Mould in the bathroom, stained sheets, mouldy kettle, no fridge or working hairdryer, terrible parking, broken cupboards and draws that fell on a foot when used! dirty room with Exposed wires and broken lights. Our provided breakfast was a small box of cereal, juice box, milk and sometimes a bowl and piece of fruit. No prior warning that the pool/dining area was closed when making a booking. Just a sign on the door to the areas. The people at the hotel were drunk and loud, the hallways were disgusting and smelt like mould. Terrible place. I would not recommend ever.

We stayed at the Four Canoes in February as part of a trip around New Zealand. We booked two rooms and were allocated one in the main block and a second in the two storey block overlooking the road.
The general condition of the hotel is shabby and the photos on Booking.com flatter to deceive. The room in the main block had one light only in the main room and one in the bathroom neither with a shade.
The furniture was poor quality, broken shelves and covered in tape where it had once been moved.
The toilet and shower were poor. The fridge was propped up on wooden blocks at an angle and didn’t invite use.
The upside was the bedding was clean and smart.
The reception was not staffed that often and there was no food served at all. A community kitchen and vending machines were offered.
Neither pool looked clean and the pool surround was untidy and unloved.
Very disappointed overall and would not ever recommend it.

A group of four, we booked accommodation at four canoes as there was nothing left in Rotorua for our dates. By the pictures we were looking forward to what seemed like a neat hotel. What we got was vastly different from the online pictures. Our room consisted of two queen beds a TV and a small bathroom with shower over bath. The bathroom was filthy! Rusted taps and grime in all corners, there was a thick layer of dust over the phone / TV and God knows what splattered on the walls.
I mentioned this to the reception attendant and she said our room #30 to #35 were the last in the complex to have bathroom renovations... they need it! Will never stay here again.

This is one of the best hotels I had stayed so far. I stayed along with my friends. The pool was amazing. Look for this hotel if you are travelling to Rotorua. Cheap and best hotel in budget. Looking forward to stay again.

Sorry only just logged on and found this question now. I don't do Backpackers but I liked this place. When I stayed there it was last October and it was a hotel style room with sham/cond etc, dryer, towels, but with hostel type facilities. The tea/coffee was down in the foyer, the only TV was in a shared lounge and the kitchen was a shared kitchen. I felt comfortable laying around the lounge room watching movies and the kitchen was very large and tidy but not that I used that. I stayed in a disgusting backpackers in Taupo (not my choice) and this place was a shared facility but I would still recommend it.
Dear Guest,
We are in the transition period from Backpacker to Motel and yes we do provide towels, bath gel & shampoo in the rooms.
Kind Regards,
Karan Jhand
