Nestled in 2,500 acres of 800 year old native forest, this award-winning luxury lodge is a life-long dream realised by owner and passionate naturalist John Sax. This uniquely New Zealand experience is a sanctuary and retreat of breath-taking terrain, offering the ultimate in world-class accommodation and adventure. Located outside Rotorua, the Maori heartland and trout fishing capital of the world, the Lodge’s elegant, ecology-inspired and architectural style was derived from the country’s pioneering past, with timber and stone finished echoing the natural beauty and simplicity of the great outdoors. Treetops offer seven streams, on-site trout fishing, four lakes and over 35 miles of adventure trails. Family adventures include helicopter adventures to live volcanoes, geocaching hunts and for the smaller guests a 5 Star Kids Club. Of particular note is Treetops Estate to Plate philosophy, with most of the dishes created by the dedicated team of chefs featuring ingredients reared or grown on this vast estate and near 100% pesticide free. These include world-class game and trout and also highlight estate-grown fruit and vegetables plus unique native herbs from the forest. Also offered is a superb wine cellar of New Zealand and world wines, with expert advice on making the best possible matches New are the complimentary Treetops Signature Experiences; ‘Estate to Plate’ Safari, Wild Food Cooking School, and the Indigenous Food and Heritage Trail - all offering unequalled personal interaction with the natural heritage and native wilderness. Our dedicated spa offers unique health-giving Maori rituals and traditional treatments, or for golfers, Treetops extends a personal invitation to their sister lodge, The Kinloch Club which boasts the 18 hole Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.

Everything about Treetops was a 5 for us - the wonderful staff, especially Lola,Filipe and his outstanding meals, the luxurious accommodations and the setting. Where else in the world can you immerse yourself in miles and miles of invigorating walks through the Native bush, lunch at a spectacular waterfall meander back to your villa and soak in your own private spa pool and then stroll to the lodge for champagne, gourmet food and NZ best wines? Then again you might want to go clay bird shooting, horse riding, 4 wheel drive adventuring or maybe just sit by the big open fire and read. We spent 3 nights in a villa and could have staying longer Highly, highly recommend

We had the most wonderful weekend, just wish we could have stayed longer. The staff are so kind and did their absoltute best to ensure our stay was as magical as possible. The food is out of this world. We were so lucky to have had the opportunity to experience the best gourmet food and wine we have ever had! The bedding was luxurious and so comfortable. The room so spacious and private.

30 of us hired the lodge for two days, two nights of conversation and vision sharing. We couldn't have found a more perfect context. From the stunning, secluded setting and understated sumptuous luxury, to the quality of the food and capacity of the staff this really was top drawer.

We celebrated a big birthday here recently and heartedly enjoyed our stay. The villa was warm, welcoming and private. It overlooked hectares of natural bush and was indeed a place of calm and luxury. The attention to detail and warmth of Ash, who did everything to make our stay magical was top notch as was the wonderful Filipe who made outstanding cuisine. These two gentleman made our stay. Would love to stay again.

My wife and I booked the two night Lap of Luxury package in order to celebrate my birthday. Our celebration was noted when we booked and also when we checked in. While not required, some sort of acknowledgement of my birthday would have been nice, but it was not forthcoming until some other guests reminded the staff and a bit of cake was brought out the second night for dessert. Not major, but certainly not up to the experiences we had when celebrating at other "luxury" lodges. This could be overlooked had it not been for other complications caused by poor management and communication. There is no central information or reception desk in the main lodge. Our package was to have two "inclusions". When we inquired about them from a passing staff member, we were told that they would check and get back to us. They never did and we did not participate in the activities that were to be included. The most glaring incident of poor management was when we checked out. My Visa card was charged for the accomodation (plus dinner drinks). Problem was that I prepaid for the accomodation through my travel agent. The charge to my Visa was at the wholesale agent rate, which was significantly less than my prepaid retail rate. It took two weeks of phone calls, texts and emails among me, the travel agent and Treetops to finally have my Visa refunded for the wholesale rate, with no adjustment for the inclusions that were not offered. Treetops itself is a impressive facility with premium rooms and extensive grounds. Chef Filipe's dinners were delicious and well presented. But the overall experience fell far short of stays at other luxury lodges. Treetops is as expensive (if not more) than other luxury lodges, but the management falls way short of providing the expected luxury experience.

I have spent some time researching the issues your have identified in this post, and it is frustrating as another review on this page is from a group at the lodge the same weekend, they gave the lodge a 5/5 review. I can understand your frustration and there are points you have made that are certainly relevant. It was our Head Chef Felipe who advised me that he had not known about your birthday prior to your arrival. This was the week after you stayed at Treetops. The team had been notified that it was your birthday prior by our reservations manager, but with a busy weekend, a full house - it had been overlooked in the in-house notation. It was human error, we have systems in place but in your case it fell through and Felipe did attempt to make good on the night, as soon as he was made aware of your celebration. We apologize for that as we know so many of our guests are at the lodge for a special occasion. No consolation for you at the time, but we have learnt and tightened up our special request guest notations. With the charge to your credit card, and I know Ashwin sent you a personal apology, and yes it has been rectified, the two week wait to credit your card back is due to our bank and the new NZ money laundering banking rules. It is most frustrating. We had pre-arranged for you on the Saturday to do your 4WD Safari, and this was changed at your request to the Sunday. Unfortunately our Estate Manager was busy with other guests on the Sunday and unable to facilitate your activity. We have a system that if any guests do not get their planned choice of activity we have alternative options to offer. As our Lodge Manager was not at Treetops that weekend, our owner John Sax was at the lodge hosting guests, so it was certainly not without the most senior management present. With reference to our your package rate - currently we are selling packages (as yours was) at up to 50% less than regular package inclusions pre COVID. We have also stayed open all through COVID unlike many in our competitor set who closed their doors, and released their staff. We do not accept we are more expensive than other lodges in our competitor set. This reply is of little consolation I know as you have stayed, experienced and departed. I have reached out to you directly. As you can see below from recent guest reviews we do get it right nearly all the time. The team - Felipe our Head Chef, Ashwin Food and Beverage Manager, Dave our Estate Manager and our owner, who has reviewed every part of this complaint and history are most apologetic. Sincerely,
