Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The motel units are clean, comfortable, and adequate for a short stay. I had left a telephone message before arrival, and not had any reply, so when we arrived and I introduced myself, the young lady explained to me that the owners do not speak English, and she, herself is only a part time worker who helps them out. HOW in NZ, can this happen? The criteria for living and working in NZ, as a foreigner, is that English is tested prior to working visa's or residency is granted (being an immigrant myself, I know this first hand!). Despite this language barrier, which is more annoying than anything else, our stay was comfortable. The unit could do with a freshen up - coat of paint, new bathroom floors, shower glass cleaned better etc. We chose this motel as it had a hot tub, but the tub annoyingly switches off every supposed 8 - 10 minutes. This seemed more like every 5 minutes and the re-set switch is so far away from the tub, you have to hop out in the COLD to switch it back on! So much for my relaxing time. The motel request to avoid using the hot tub after 10pm is realistic and understandable, and we were happy to comply. I'm sure we will return, possibly. Hope the re-set hot tub switches are moved by then!

Booked for a six night stay . Unit was tidy and clean so looked forward to a nice stay. However the motel was right on the main highway from Rotorua to Whakatane. All night from about 2am - when first awoken with the room and doors vibratinf - heavy trucks were traveling down the road. Inward bound was the sound of air brakes slowing down the vehicles and outward bound was the roar of engines picking up speed. The many logging trucks double loaded trailer units were the worst. After 4 nights - checked out and conceded the total amount of the stay we paid for. . NOISEY MOTEL ON MAIN ROAD

Clean, comfortable and affordable. No issues with noise from traffic, or other guests. Spa was great although annoying it was on such a short timer that you had to get out of the spa to reset. Staff were very helpful.

With check in, there were non English speaking people at reception, After a few phone calls in their language, But it was not a very professional welcome for paying guests. First night couldn’t sleep because the cystern of the toilet made a very hard pitch noise , try to tell them in the morning, remember no English, but when invited to my room he knew excecly what I was complained about , as he looked in the cystern bent something in there showed me what he had done, no problem🤫🤣 anymore. Got back later that night , problem stil there, wasn’t prepared for a second night without any sleep, called the office, explained my problem to the owner, as he was back in the office again, to make a long story short, he tried to convince me that nobody else had complained about it before, for himself wouldn’t be a problem , so it shouldn’t be for me . I asked him if this was how he treated paying customers, and asked him to leave my room, and have the problem solved the next day.😰 Also the bedheads are rusting on the sides I am very sorry to say , the place is rundown, and not professionally run.

Booked Birchwood Spa Motel without much knowledge because of business trip but this motel was awesome unexpectedly. To be honest, I did not expect much but it was really good one!! The room has a private spa and very relax atmosphere. The room is warm and quiet but TV was quite tiny and located near the ceiling, so not easy to watch something but free wifi helps a lot for my laptop.

I didn't book my room on-line, but just showed up and asked if anything was available. The desk clerk, who had been watering the flowers and shrubs out front, was very nice and asked me if I minded if the spa wasn't working. I told here I didn't care, and she offered me a great price on the room with the broken jacuzzi tub (she assured me the shower was in good working order, which it was.) I asked to see the room first, which she was glad to do, and I booked it immediately. If this hadn't worked out I probably would have gone to the Holiday Inn a block south for over twice the price. As it was, I had a comfortable place to stay, close to the redwood forest tree walk (among other local attractions). What I really liked were all of the coffee and tea options provided in the room. And not just instant coffee - they provided a little french press and coffee grounds. Plus some cookies, several types of tea, and hot chocolate. There was a hot water pot, of course, along with a microwave, refrigerator, and toaster. It made my morning quite nice.

Rooms were run down and overall experience very sub-par and quite disappointing. Hotel needs management to show pride in their property by providing facilities that are not in a state of disrepair. It seemed that the motel attendee was doing her job as a favour to the owner and did not seem to care what guest thought.

Stayed here for one night. Good location to visit the Whakarewarena Maori Village, just around the corner so easy walking distance and well worth a visit. The accommodation is fairly standard motel style for a New Zealand. Older accommodation which is probably well overdue for a makeover and upgrade. Queen bedroom and bathroom are both upstairs, which is a bit inconvenient with the living area down stairs. WiFi was good although my wife’s IPhone simply could not connect despite my best attempts. Over all comfortable but really in need of a fairly major upgrade and makeover of bathroom, kitchen, settee and TV’s to larger more modern units.

We booked this motel a while ago, and recently they’d had some critical reviews, so we feared the worst. But we arrived and were promptly checked into our room. Ok it was a bit tired, but it was spotlessly clean and the bed was so comfy. We had a spa bath, but only used the shower so not sure if that worked or not. Lovely powerful shower with Lots of hot water. We stayed 3 nights and weren’t disturbed at all, it was so quiet. The man on reception was so kind, printing us directions to different places and generally helping us any way he could. We would def stay again

Spent one night in this lovely motel in Rotorua. We stayed in a studio with private spa. The bed was too soft for us. They provided extra pillows. Free coffee, tea, hit chocolate and fresh milk. The location was awesome, just 5 minutes from the CBD. Highly recommended A+++
