Powered by AI
Nestled near the lake and local attractions, the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside garners praise for its location, though it's not quite at the city's heart. Travelers report mixed experiences with the hotel's cleanliness and service, ranging from satisfactory to disappointing.
The geothermal spa pools stand out as a highlight, yet guests often feel the hotel falls short on value, citing steep prices for the experience received. Rooms are regularly flagged for requiring updates and improved maintenance, while the overall atmosphere is seen as a blend of charm and areas needing refreshment.

Detailed Reviews
Rotorua feels more touristy than many places we visited but hotel was easy to find and a good location in town near the visitors center, "pedestrian only restaurant/bar" street and the lake. Never had a problem with parking (Complimentary) and staff was friendly and welcoming. Rooms are very comfortable and ours had a nice lake view. I walked over to the lake one morning and there is a lot of construction going on, evidently completly reworking the area according to the master plan notices I saw posted.
I asked about ice when I checked in and they said to call for it - which I did but it never arrived so I went to bar and they were very accommodating (room has fridge/coffee). Second day after touring all day we returned to room late afternoon and it was untouched but housekeeper in area supplied fresh towels and we persevered. Breakfast was quite nice in a large, busy dining room.
Didn't use the pool/spa but it looked OK. Kind of gloomy.

As the borders are closed we decided to head to Rotorua for some family holidays. Booked King and twin interconnecting rooms. We pulled up and checked in all good. We stayed 4 nights and made great use of the indoor pool and spa with the kids. We had breakfast booked with the rooms and found this was great for the kids and we had dinner there twice. We have stayed here a few time in the last few years and the rooms are looking very dated, the same Pool filling signs are in the same spa units as last year! There seems to be confusion on use of shared serving utensils at Breakfast vs dinner service. Breakfast you had your own tongs and serving spoons to use per table but this was only for the cold items. this was very annoying as you always forgot to bring the utensil you needed. Hot items had a spoon at location. Dinner service all dishes had their own serving utensils in/next to the dishes. The Hotel has good parking and location to Rotorua's main street.

We stayed here for a week, using it as a base to do some sightseeing in the central North Island.
Nice room overlooking the lake. Spacious and comfortable.
Staff friendly and helpful.
There is plenty of parking, but the car park was often quite full. Nevertheless we always managed to get a park on site for our rental car.
Room cleaning could be a bit hit and miss - eg our rubbish bin was not always emptied.
The internet was slow at the best of times and one day was not working at all. When I asked how long it was going to be out I was told they didn't know - "it needed a big fix". We needed internet access to keep our business ticking over while away from home and found it unacceptable for a hotel such as a Novotel to have such poor internet.
Hotel restaurant good for dinners, we did not try breakfast here.
Hotel is well located for plenty of other eating options in the Eat Streat area.
I would have loved to have given this hotel a 5 out of 5, but couldn't, particularly because of the internet. I also thought it was quite expensive. Nevertheless we really enjoyed our stay and would return.

We have always enjoyed our visits to Rotorua and the Novotel has always been our preferred hotel. However on this visit we noticed that our room was somewhat tired - stains on carpet, damaged and worn furniture and given the time of year (new year), the room price was high.
Another negative was having to request that our room be serviced at 3.30pm after being out for most of the day and returning from a walk in the Redwood Forest.
The meals in the restaurant (buffet) are very good but we have noticed that some offerings are not replenished which can be disappointing. The hot food options for breakfast could be improved.
Yes, we will stay there again as having free parking is a bonus and the location is fabulous, particularly if you get a lake view room.

The room was spacious with 2 queen beds. Our window had a view out to the lake. The bathroom had shampoo and body lotion. Be careful with the shower/bathtub enclosure. The step up into the tub isn't bad but when getting out of the shower the step on to the floor is about 8 inches lower than expected. The tub is small while the step out is larger. Not a biggie but be careful.
The shower area does not have a fan so humidity and fog stems up fast in the room even with fast showers. There isn't much room for your toilery bag but there is room outside of the bathroom. The included breakfast buffet was good. A variety of items to select. You can even ask the chef to make poached or fried eggs which means you will receive hot eggs. Bacon in all of New Zealand is very different than USA, so we decided to skip the bacon. I noticed someone making a fresh smoothie from items on the buffet. Good service for hot tea refills.
The complimentary thermal pools was a nice experience for us. There are 3 small pools, all indoor which are mineral water. The pools ranged from hot to warm and they all had an odor which is natural for thermal water. There is a cold plunge pool (brrrr but had to try), a cooler hot tub with regular water and then a mid sized pool with regular water. There are pool towels and water provided and you do need your room key to get into the area. We enjoyed soaking and trying all the pools. But be warned, the thermal pools do leave an odor on your swimsuit. We did rinse our suit several times with soap and shampoo and the smell lessen but still there a bit. I am hoping it will dissipate over time.
The hotel is in walking distance to Eat Street area which houses many choices of restaurants and bars.

Overnight stay, great COVID19 processes in place, very friendly staff, clean rooms, spacious, Great Lake views 427 and 429, beautiful comfy clean bedding, great set up with good size fridge, tea coffee milk sugar facilities and bathroom amenities, hair dryer, big towels and spa towels, Good gymn facilities downstairs and big pool area, little smelly but that’s Rotorua I enjoyed the tepid kidney shaped pool, nice and deep the hot spa and jets, attempted the ice spa but too cold and tried one of the many geothermal spas. The whole room was very dark and a bit creepy but I was with people however I wouldn’t go there on my own. No time to try the private spas but they looked good. Had a meal in the hotel restaurant which was very tasty most of the meals anyway, good wine selection. One entree the prawns tasted old and not appealing but the rest was great. The hotel bar was also very comfy. Location is excellent across the road from Eat Street bars and restaurants and close to the Lake for walks and local shops. I was happy here and will definitely come back. Thanks Novatel 😊

A lovely location but sadly a very average and dated hotel now, at a very top of the range price. Much better to stay at any of the quality motels in Rotorua. Weirdly outdated charging for WiFi in your room, WiFi is only free in the lobby. Bike storage meant walking your bikes through the lobby and spa area, and very small for the amount of people coming here with bikes (you really don’t want to be getting your bike out more than once a day). Because of the shape, most rooms seem to look into other rooms.
Best part about it is the bar area with comfortable chairs and huge open double doors where you can sit and look outside to the lake.

We originally booked for one night but after less than an hour realised this is such a nice hotel that we added another night to or stay. The room had a perfect lake view, was quite large and we enjoyed a great sleep both nights.
We had breakfast (mushrooms) on the first morning and it was delicious.
ALL staff (pun intended) were amazing, with check in and checkout both seamless, while the restaurant personnel and housekeepers were all warm and full of smiles.
Thanks to everyone for giving us such wonderful treatment.

We stayed in a junior suite for three nights recently. The room had an odd configuration (it looked like a standard room and store cupboard had been knocked into one) and a very tired bathroom. Whilst we could see the lake we also looked directly into the MIQ hotel next door and had to keep the curtains closed most of the time. On Saturday night there was very loud (and very bad) live music in a restaurant very close to our room. It kept us awake until nearly midnight. My partner went to reception and complained and the receptionist said he would ask them to turn it down. Nothing happened of course. When we mentioned this when we checked out (pointing out the irony of paying extra for a suite and then ending up with one of the noisiest rooms in the hotel) the receptionist seemed unsurprised (and disinterested) and simply said they had had quite a few complaints. Overall very poor value (particularly as we paid for a suite) and we will try somewhere else next time we visit in June.

I would like to personally apologize for the noise disturbance your experienced during your stay, as well as for the lack of service in addressing your complaint. We stayed for 2 nights at the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside Hotel A very nice property. Location is perfect, just close to the lake, with great views. A food court is just few meters away and you get almost all cuisines. Breakfast has good variety and quality is good as well. Service is good. The only issues, they charged for a pastry to celebrate birthday, though they mentioned its complimentary initially.

I’m not sure, however the staff at reception will be s as now to advise you, I would email them 😊
I do not know. I did see bikes that were available for guest use, but I did not check them out.
Nay Lud. The bar t'is a big wee room with big easy chairs, a small bar & a giant fire pit in the "hey diddle diddle" where yer can sit & sip yer whisky or wotever. The Dining room like everything else at the Rotorua Novotel t'is "You-mung-gas". This is jest a BIG HOTEL.
Rotorua is over four hours away from Auckland Airport. I would take Skybus to the Intercity Coach Station in Auckland and then take an Intercity coach to Rotorua. The hotel is about four blocks from where the coach drops you off in Rotorua. You can walk or take a taxi to the hotel.
