LOL..just read a review saying they could smell the sulphur in their room...doh..welcome to Rotorua. I am a guest from Australia. Great little motel. Great location. Spa bath very excellent after a big day out. Very clean and tidy. My double bed was a little bit hard for me..but that's just tough..they cant suit everyones standard. Mid budget motel that is worth the money. If you want to complain..go to the Hilton..bet the bed isn't up to your standard there either..serial complainers I say. Thanks Midway..would come back again.

Spent two nights here on our trip around the North Island of NZ, and recommend this. Staff were very helpful and obliging, room tidy and comfortable. A little dated, but clean and everything worked fine. Hot pool and private courtyard a real bonus.

Was one of only a couple of options when booking late in Rotorua around the New Year. Was pleasantly surprised. Efficient checkin, free wifi, and a unique layout with a double bed, two singles, and a toilet upstairs, in addition to the bathroom and queen bed downstairs. Not really a place to stay for days, but we would definitely look again in spending a couple of days in town.

I so agree with Deborah you can't please everyone. The fact that you can smell sulphur comes with the fact that this is Rotorua - eveywhere smell of sulphur. We only had one night here and after the motel we had previously visited this was heaven! We sat outside in our little patio with a glass of wine and enjoyed the plunge pool [our first ever private one]. The bed was very comfortable and cooking favilities very good. We only wish we had left our previous accommodation early and come here. We would certainly recommend this super little motel.

Despite this motel advertising on the front page of their website that they are the "perfect accommodation choice for... large groups and sports teams", we felt unwelcome from the moment we arrived, before we had even received rooms for our keys. We were told that there was to be no noise after 10pm, which we agreed to, thinking it quite reasonable. Our group had 5 of the bigger units (rooms 3, 10, 11, 12, 13), housing 20 people total, along with another 20 or so across the road at Geneva.
The rooms were adequate - no milk was offered for tea/coffee facilities though, and only one towel per person, despite having a plunge pool. When extra towel were requested, we were told that they would cost $2 each, and we would be charged cleaning costs for littering - what this littering clause had to do with extra towels, we don't know. The particular unit I was in (which had 5 people) was given 2 tiny bars of soap for the five nights we were in, no spare toilet rolls (the final morning was frugal use of the small amount of toilet paper we had left), and we were given two facecloths daily to use between 5 people.
At any other motel, I would have gone and requested these items, but the owner had made it clear that asking for extras was not part of the service he offered - it seemed like he was trying to cut costs wherever possible.
The rooms were clean enough, but quite cool. The radiator heater didn't maintain the room temperature overnight, and there was insufficuent bedding for July - one thin quilt and a mink blanket per bed, with no spare blankets in the room. Again, we didn't feel we could approach the owner to ask for spare blankets, for fear of being charged for them, or given another lecture about noise or littering (which, I might add, we had done neither of).
Despite this, the motel was comfortable and we were quite happy there. I had checked with the owner a couple of times during the week that he had had no troubles from any of our units, and he assured me that all was fine.
On our final night in Rotorua, our group had a little gathering over the road at Geneva in one of the rooms - this was prearranged with the owner over there, since the owner of Midway had been so strict about his 10pm noise control. Geneva didn't even realise we'd had a gathering, as they never heard any noise. As our group started to wander back to their rooms for bedtime (admittedly, later than 10pm), we made sure to be silent as we walked through the courtyard, to respect the other customers staying that the motel. The owner accosted me as I walked to my room (as manager of the group, I was the one he had contact with), and threatened to call the police because of "all the noise" - this coming less than a minute after we'd silently arrived at the motel. He claimed that Room 13 had been complaining about the noise from Room 12 for the last few hours. We pointed out that Room 12 and 13 were both ours, and had been empty all night until literally a minute ago.
I walked into Room 12 to tell the people in there what the owner had said about noise, and to suggest that we keep it down n ow, so as to not upset him. I was only partway through telling them this sentence when the owner knocked on the door and said it had been too long, and he was on the phone to the police right now.
4 police cars turned up - a little overkill for people trying to arrive home and go to bed quietly. The owner then changed his mind to say it was Room 14 that had complained - the first of the rooms in that row that wasn't our group booking. We don't know whether they actually complained at all or not, but if they did, it wasn't any of our rooms making noise, as we weren't even home.
However! The police had arrived, and we all stood around in the courtyard (making a lot more noise than we would have if we were in our own rooms...), where the owner told the police that he wanted us all out on the street right now. A winter's night, when every motel in Rotorua was full, and he wanted to kick 20 people out. Eventually he changed his mind and decided he just wanted Room 12 out in the cold - but the police realised he was bonkers and suggested we all just go to bed - as we were trying to do, and had been delayed in doing by this point.
At this point, I should mention that we had previously already paid our bill - it was organised that I would pay both motel bills directly to Geneva, and she would then organise payment to Midway for the rooms we used there. The following morning (our check-out morning), the owner of Midway was on the phone to Geneva, demanding his payment in cash right now before we left. He claimed that there were damages to the rooms that we would be paying for - this before we had checked out anhd he had been through the rooms. I offered one of our members to do a walk-through the rooms with him, so he could show us the damages (we were quite prepared to pay for any damaged we had caused, but each of our units assured me that had not caused any). However, the owner refused to do a walk-through with us, saying that he would do the inspection after we had left, and asked for (nay, demanded) my personal credit card number for the damages caused by our group.
We have only been home for a couple of days, and haven't heard anything from the Midway owner re: damages yet, but I am still waiting to see if he has any extra back-lash for us.
Overall - I do believe tat Midway do a good job for single-room bookings perhaps, but for a group booking, not so much. He didnb't want us before we even arrived, and made it clear to us so many times during our stay. The final night was complete overkill and made him look like quite a fool. Not even a simple reminder to keep noise down - and we didn't believe we were making any noise anyway, as we were so conscious of his 10pm curfew - although, as it turns out, I believe he wanted us in bed, lights out and asleep by 10pm, not just in our rooms and quietly talking.
For group bookings, I suggest taking your business elsewhere - Geneva across the road are a far better option.

There was not a single thing good about our stay at Midway Motel.
We were getting off farm for 2 nights and thought to stay in Rotorua. Our usual hotel was fully booked so we decided to find another one.
I saw the hotel on booking.com and thought this hotel was fine and it looked clean and tidy from the outside......but inside the room was a different story.
Dated interior, dirty plates and glasses, horibble beds and pillows, dirty toilet door that the cleaners haven't even tried to clean, and by far the worst and possibly a hazard was the bathroom floor dropped down for their plunge pool but there was no signage to say so. There was also hair at the bottom of the plunge pool that most definitely didn't belong to any of us.
On top of that the family next to our room had young children and the parents, I assume, thought that having their kids scream amd laugh loud enough that we could hear them, through a brick wall I might add, was acceptable, when its not.
Then there was the wifi. Considering that it was token based we would of actually prefered just a sign-in rather than having to have a pile of codes that only last, if used a little bit at a time, about 10 minutes at most.
Also, if you know that your guests are going to be using the wifi you would think youwould have more than just a few codes per day.
I would never suggest this motel to anyone.

We stayed for one night at the midway motel. Our unit had a double bed downstairs and double and 2 singles in the upstairs. Upstairs had a toilet and hand basin.
It had a hot tub in the bathroom area which we managed to get 2 adults and 2 teenagers in it (at a push) We were close to the road and my mother found it a bit noisy but she is used to living in the country where there is no road noise. It was close to downtown with a short drive.
Friendly host that was happy to help us in any way.

What we paid and what we got are worlds apart. Although all amenities are available they are old and in semi working condition. Kitchen appliances noisy (microwave and fridge). Lights not working. Bathrooms in dire need of a paint. Rust and worn carpets. Free wireless available but signal so poor you switch over anyway. Very noisy - able to hear everything the people in the rooms around you do. Although it is spacious, for $250 per night I wouldn't return.

I stayed for just one night at the friendly MIdway Motel. Lovely mineral pool off main room, could even watch tv from it! Comfortable King Size bed, easy use of kitchen (self contained), good size TV, and a real reasonable rate for a single traveller (at short notice also). Love to stay again just to go in the pool;) Also small but refreshing back private patio with native plants surrounding, could see that being good in the summer time. Also handy distance to supermarket, and restaurants. Easy to find.

Plenty of space for 2 couples and two small children in the larger 2 storey units (a novelty for my Kiwi grandaughter). Agree with other reviews regarding the owners and the well equipped units but the units are starting to show their age. We all enjoyed the thermal pool with its constant supply of hot water. So much better than a spa bath. There is a hinged cover so safe for the children when not in use.
It was also nice and warm with the thermal spring water powering the central heating.
