What shock when we got there found out the the lodge was a housing place for MSD ( ministry of social development) families and that out of the 11 units 7 were taken by MSD. So there are kids running wild from 1 end if the complex to the other outside your room as the balconies run the length of the complex. We had a 2 bedroom unit right in the middle of these families and could hear the next door people walking around as the upstairs floors creaked and the walls were not sound proof. These units need some TLC as doors are squeaky, coming off the hinges. Units could be updated but I suppose if they are getting used to house MSD families you would bother. Then to top off our stay we had no hot water for 24hrs as the hot water cylinder broke down ( with no compensation offered). The unit was clean.…
The heating is very very poor no heat pump little tiny heaters that give out little heat. In summer it will roasting as no Air Con is present. Furniture is outdated and in need of replacement damaged by water. Key to your room also fits other rooms I mistakenly entered another room using my key which frightened me to think how easy it was for someone to do it to my room. Bathroom is downstairs in the COLD so when you get out of the shower you have to go all the way upstairs to where some attempt of heat is. Can;t close bedroom door as bed is in the way they obviously have no idea how to run the place out to make a profit and provide very little. Noise of traffic is heard all the time from nearby Highway. I would not recommend staying here until they spend some money of renovations.…
I travel to Rotorua each year to go mountain biking. While only a five minute drive into town, the Pohutu lodge is the closest hotel to the mountain biking hub. It’s only an easy 5-10 minute ride to the trails. Accommodation is not modern, but comfortable, and the staff are all helpful, friendly and attentive. The owner Mark, has always been great to deal with and has gone out of his way to attend to our needs in regard to our bike storage and cleaning. The Pohutu geyser is literally next door, and there is 24hr BP right across the road. I’m already looking forward to my next stay at the Pohutu!
Our family of 4 stayed for one night in a two-bedroom, two-story room. It was comfortable and clean - basic but what we needed and paid for. Good cooking facilities and very quiet. Our top floor doors opened out onto a walkway for all units, but this was not an issue.
I would have liked to give a very good review to this motel, which tries hard. Receptionist really friendly, and the room with small kitchen was well set up for a budget stay. As others have said, some things are old and tired, but for the price, you’re going to expect that. Unfortunately the nearby highway meant a good sleep was impossible for me: I woke at 5am each day with the noise, and the passing trucks made the building and bed shake. If you’re a heavy sleeper, or maybe in a room on the non-highway side of the building, you might not have any problems, as other reviewers have said it was fine for them. Otherwise, all was good.
Booked for 5 nights and the staff have been great. Very friendly and willing to help with anything we asked. The family unit was comfortable with bonus of Netflix and wifi included in the cost so it was great value compared to other motels/hotels for same price. It is close to town but a car is needed to get around. It is also around the corner from Whakarewarewa which is the best cultural village in town where you can see the geysers, have a traditional hangi and watch a great Maori performance. In the family unit there are 2 single beds down stairs and the main bathroom with a spa bath, while upstairs was a double bed with own toilet. The kitchen is small but sufficient for a short stay and the loungeroom upstairs also has a foldout bed. We have stayed at other motels in town for a lot more money which delivered less. Some people have spoken about noise however despite the car park being full we were not disturbed at night. Like any older building you can hear people walking around upstairs and other units slam doors but that occurs at any motel/hotel. The only negative is the tight car park but every unit has a numbered car space and there also room to park on street outside if needed. I highly recommend staying at pohutu lodge if in Rotorua for the service and value for money.…
Not a bad motel. Staff were friendly. Family unit we had was good set up. Only down side was the Internet wasn't that flash and you had to get new code when it ran out. Bathroom wasn't very clean and the desk/ table in bedroom was still sticky and coffee rings on it. Some cutlery in kitchen weren't clean, so we washed everything before use. Other than that was good. Location was pretty good, not noisy from traffic, 5 mins by car to centre of town
Price rate for room was very reasonable for what we got. Our room was a two storey two bed apartment. Living quarters upstairs. They lent us a part-a-cot for our baby free of charge. No highchair available. Room was tidy and clean with everything we needed. Furniture was modern but bathroom was a little dated. The free 1gb wi-fi ran out quickly with 4 adults and they gave us another 3gb's worth for free. they also gave us extra towels when requested. We left a wallet behind in the room and the receptionist was so unbelievably helpful. She wrapped the parcel up, printed out our courier labels and called us to confirm once it was collected. Above and beyond what we expected.
As mentioned in previous reviews, while clean, the rooms are a bit tired, That said, let's mention about the positives. The unit was really big and spacious - kids room and bathroom downstairs, adults and living upstairs. It was very clean (although the bathrooms needed a bit of TLC) The location (basically next door to Whakarewarewa and mountain biking) was perfect. Big TV with lots of channels (and WIFI) Excellent, friendly service - we needed somewhere special to park the big truck (to not obstruct other guests) and they happily obliged with a staff park. We would happily return to Pohutu Lodge next time we're mountain biking - you can ride to the forest in about 5 minutes. You can do a lot worse in Rotorua for a lot more money :)
Reception was very helpful and friendly, and they were very accommodating during peak season. Whilst the bed linens were clean, the rest of the unit was very worn down, and not as clean as it could be....the shower had a thick layer of scum around the base. The units get very hot in summer, and the two-level unit we had had the creakiest floor, so would wake up people in bedroom below. If I could offer any constructive advice that would be to get a handyman or builder to go through all the units to get things back in working order. The only x-factor of this property was that it backs onto Te Puia geyser, and you can go through the gate to adjacent park and view the thermal activity from above. Needless to say, being adjacent to a thermal park attracts sulphur smells (which I actually love).…
