Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

From the moment we got a friendly wave from Grace as we drove up the drive, I knew it was going to be an enjoyable stay. David and Grace could not have been more helpful. They recommended places to visit and provided an excellent home-made continental breakfast. Breakfast was always spent chatting to them about life in New Zealand and David provided many facts, figures and stories for us. Everything was spotless and the alpaca feeding was a real bonus. Perfect location if you want to be out of downtown Rotorua. Thank you both.

We stayed for two nights in The Cottage. It was absolutely superb. We had a main bedroom, a smaller single room, a bathroom, living room and kitchen area. There was even a laundry room, which was very welcome after three weeks travelling! The entire accommodation was beautifully appointed, immaculately clean, and thoughtfully presented, and really comfortable. The kitchen had everything needed to self cater. The lounge was super comfortable, and even had soft snuggly throws if the evening was chilly. The flower filled garden surrounded The Cottage, and the Alpacas in the next field welcomed us each morning. It is a truly special place to stay. Our hosts, David and Grace, are two of the nicest people you could meet. Nothing was too much trouble, they are the most wonderful hosts. We loved our time here, and can’t recommend this gorgeous accommodation highly enough. It’s just perfect. Thank you David and Grace x

Excellent room with views across Rotorua. Hosts David (sorry forgotten your wife’s name) were excellent. Accommodated my intolerance at breakfast well and went out of their way to help. Jacuzzi an added bonus. David’s cooking skills and knowledge kept us entertained especially the jam at breakfast. Thank you both so much for helping make our memories

Enjoyed our two night stay at City Lights. Grace and David were excellent hosts, useful information about the area, homemade breakfast and interesting conversations. Property ideally located minutes drive from the city but high and quiet away from the crowds in the town. Super views.

What a great place to stay. City Lights is in a great location tucked away on the side of the mountain just outside Rotarua yet it’s convenient for getting into the city and for moving around the area. It’s homely and comfortable with the use of a lounge, hot tub and sauna. David and Grace are the loveliest couple and are both helpful and very welcoming. The breakfasts were really nice and the preserves, bread and granola were all home made. I would recommend staying with Grace and David and if we’re ever back in New Zealand we’d definitely stay here again.

Stayed 3 nights (17-20 Nov) in one of the apartments. Cannot fault the accommodation. Roomy, fully equipped, comfortable - could easily have lived here. Grace and David charming from our first meeting. Fun couple who certainly made you feel relaxed and special from first introductions. Gave lots of info and ideas about the local sites. Some great places to visit nearby. Far enough away from the geyser aromas!!! We decided to relax after a long drive soaking in the hot tub - David appeared with two complimentary glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon. So very thoughtful and very much appreciated. Would certainly recommend this Lodge - great site, lovely hosts, great accommodation. Thank you Mo and Sheena

We spent 2 nights at City Lights Boutique Lodge. It is on the outskirts of Rotorua , so you need a car , but it had lovely views from the verandah. We had the Tui suite which had a small lounge area , although there is also a lovely large guests lounge which you can use. The owners , David and Grace , were very welcoming giving us tea / coffee and homemade cake on arrival and David gave us some great recommendations on local things to do/ places to visit. The room was well appointed, as was the en-suite with a good shower and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was good with fruit, bread and hot croissants with several jams and homemade lemon curd on one day. There was also a hot tub on the terrace which we didn’t have time to use. It was a lovely place to stay for a few days.

The lodge is owned and run by a charming and helpful couple, David and Grace. You need to be aware that it is a small hotel with only 5 bedrooms so there is an intimacy, absent from larger hotels, that you get from interaction with other guests at breakfast. All the facilities are modern and first rate. The lodge has its own small herd of alpacas, which may appeal to families with young children. It is situated on the rural outskirts of Rotorua so a car is necessary for travel into the city centre. We spent 3 very pleasant nights here. However, for maximum comfort for this length of stay, or longer, we would recommend booking the suite and not one of the smaller rooms.
