Beautiful location right by the lake with helpful and friendly staff. The pool looks great too! (Although too cold in winter…) Only downside are the lack of ambiance in the restaurant and the walls between rooms not being fully soundproof.
False advertising on Booking.com when looking, then arrived and didn’t get what was on the website at all. It was old and out-dated, the bathroom was way too small (height-wise) for the average human (my husband is 6’3ft and I’m 5’9 and we both struggled to use the bathroom facility). My husband could smell black mold on arrival as well, which is unsafe for someone like myself who has asthma. Half of the items that are listed are not there, such as soundproofing. I live in a busy city in an apartment block not far from the main roads, bars, train tracks, as well as an airport and we have more soundproof rooms here than at a supposed 4 star resort. We were there for our wedding and honeymoon, it honestly affected the whole honeymoon for us and we had to come home early in the end as the bed was so uncomfortable it messed up my husband’s back. We felt they didn’t really care about making the experience enjoyable for us, we felt we were more a money-making machine than a customer who is entitled to a good experience, especially when staying at a supposed 4 star resort, with a spa attached (which I found through review you have to pay for, $30 to sit in a lukewarm spa). We didn’t let the staff know of these problems as we found them rude and unprofessional, especially at check in. On check in, as my mother had booked the place, I thought it was paid for. Just to find out from a very rude manager, that it had not been paid for. He then went on to be very condescending towards myself and my mother on the phone when I had to ring her up. And as a couple who has worked in hospitality before, it was OHS nightmare honestly. We didn’t eat at the restaurant as it looked closed the whole time and it was very over priced for small portions. We also didn’t use the spa section as well, due to price and the fact we saw reviews about the spas not being warm. We will never be returning and I will definitely NOT be recommending anyone stay here unless you enjoy back pain and getting the flu or Covid-19 with the black mold in the rooms.…
This is not a resort at all by any way, the rooms were clean and comfortable yes and as a motel / hotel is fine, the shower was Dangerous as was enjoying a shower and then so hot nearly cased burns then went so cold just to hard to have decent shower. The swimming pools both of them just AHH! Horrible got in one and had dirt and floating buts every where no chlorine added just yuck, second pool in spa area a little better but not great as well with floaties so nope and nope, Both spa hot tubs in need of attention run down low on water and just not appealing as well could not even consider getting in. Loungers had ripped swabs and the sauna and steam room not good at all. The bar looked like the 70s and restaurant we did not try but was used by others so cant say much. over all good room for one night but if you wanted more this is not it.…
The room is over priced and not clean. The bathroom is a throw back from the 80s and needs redoing. Hot tubs were cold and the hot pool is grimy and also needs a good clean. Not impressed by the service either. Cutlery dirty with crumbs and hair is the draw. If you still decide to stay here bring your own shampoo as what they have is poor quality for a place that says it’s four and a half star more like a two at next Only positive is the view of the lake
Amazing staff service, really took care of us so well. Overall lovely stay here. Would definitely come back 😊 Breakfast was really great, a lot on offer at the spa treatment. Extremely friendly staff
Sadly seen better days. Unloved and unkempt. Wish I had read latest reviews. Was probably once a nice place. But everything about it slightly depressing. Given its location some at out of town you’d want it to be a bit of destination to spend time at. We didn’t linger. Better places to stay than here. Underwhelming and sad.
Let me start by saying I would normally never give a 1 rating but the for the Wai Ora I have to make an exception. We’ve stayed here several times & were always happy with the accommodation & service, especially the restaurant & cozy bar area so we booked again for a special break. What a letdown. First they told us, after check in & paying, that the restaurant was no longer the Pacific Rim cuisine as advertised but now only Chinese cuisine. Their website & all their other advertising is still promoting the ” classy Mokoia Restaurant “. Then we returned to our room to find the rain had leaked in all over my camera gear & soaked the couch & carpet. It was also coming through the light fitting. From there things went downhill quickly. This was 9:30 p.m. & the whole place was deserted. I tried to call on the room phone but it was dead so I had to use my mobile. Initially there was no answer and a message said the voice mail was full. When we were finally able to contact someone their attitude was dismissive and totally unhelpful. They immediately went on the defensive. They said the leak was due to a heavy rainstorm that night. Well, we kinda guessed that, we’d been out in it. They were totally unconcerned that thousands of dollars worth of camera gear might have been damaged and were intent on pointing out their issues due to being fully booked later in the week. We had to argue to get moved to a dry room and told we’d have to move back into the leaky room the next day as they were fully booked over Easter. It was after 11 by the time we got to bed. It’s a real shame, this used to be one of our favourite places to stay but we’ll not be going there again. …
I stayed here few years ago and it was a 5 star resort. Since they have a new owner, things changed. They rooms are not clean. The definition of king size bed is two double bed joined together. Manager was hard to locate.
What was once a great resort is now a rundown, tired, faded shadow of its past in need of serious renovation and updating. The present owners/mangers need to address every aspect of their operation including accommodation, services, pricing, marketing and general management. Other recent reviewers have regrettably catalogued a raft of short-comings, failures and disappointments of the resort. Certainly not a recommendation for making a booking, however the resort has good bones and I’m sure with the right resources and direction it could be a shining star again.
Last Wednesday I had a afternoon check in and wanna book a dinner with them. And I had been noticed the restaurant were not opened?? And I actually had seen someone was cooking in the kitchen. And there was a man which could not speak any English and always say [yes yes] WTF??? The breakfast was sh. T as well, no saff, and no one answered phone. Room were not clean even found some bugs and hair on the bed sheet. So disappointed to the staff and management, never back again!!!!
