Very disappointed. Photos online look great. Room smelt of cigarette. No cups in room. No breakfast bowls in shared kitchen. Would not return. Dirty. Have spoken to others people who stay here a few years ago. Was great then but not now.

The room had a window to the car park with people arguing with locals, or long term residents, there. The next room played their music into the night and the hotel reception after hours number had the police emergency number as a contact. The light bulbs were removed from the hall lights and this was where the bathroom sinks were, there was no door, just washbasins to use in the dark as the picture shows. The kitchen had 2 cups to use. The single bed room was so small that the door did not even open all the way as my photo shows. Lots of visitors to the other rooms as I unfortunately saw from my bedroom window view to the car park.

We booked this place through Air BNB, very expensive, too small with basic amenities. No place to hang cloths, or to keep your luggage. Place is good for bag backers, heart of the market rest every thing is bad, rooms are too small, only one heater for two rooms. Avoid if you are traveling with family.

Me and a friend stayed here for 3 nights while exploring beautiful Rotorua. The city itself is so lovely and I would highly recommend, but what brought down our trip was our accommodation. Despite advertising as a nonsmoking room, our room stank of cigarettes and it was clear that it hadn't just been a one time thing. The room itself was an ok size for what we needed, but it was hard to be comfortable in a room that smelled so bad of stale cigarettes. The room itself was relatively clean, not the best but certainly not unbearable. The rooms also had very thin walls and noice travelled throughout which kept us up pretty late. From what we could hear there was also some permanent residents who stayed in our corridor who were up shouting, swearing and smoking at 1am, and yelling down the balcony to people on the street despite the motel apparently having a "no noise" policy after 10pm. Ultimately this motel was exactly what it says, its a budget motel suitable for staying if you plan on being outside of the room for most of the day. However for the money you spend there are other hotels/motels/hostels in the area that I would defintely suggest looking into.

Our stay at the Astray Motel was not an enjoyable one. Don’t get me wrong, the size of the room was fine. 2 beds and a bathroom, that’s all we need. How ever, despite the “no smoking” signs, our room smelt horrendous. I would never want a child to stay in there, someone with asthma or someone with any sense of smell. None the less, the location was fantastic and within walking distance to main attractions, however feeling uncomfortable in your room isn’t the most pleasant feeling. Being right on the street with thin walls also meant you heard every conversation, so to be a light sleeper might not be the best. I definitely recommend staying in Rotorua, however I can’t exactly recommend the motel. Again, size and location were amazing, but it is just unfortunate that a stricter “no smoking in rooms” policy wasn’t in place.
