Value
Welcome to the Spa Lodge, the best value budget accommodation facility for travellers in Rotorua. We are one of the original eco-friendly businesses in New Zealand: we pump geothermally heated water to heat up tap water for showers and heat radiators in the whole facility. This is not only good for the environment but it also helps keep our costs, and consequently, our rates down (one of the lowest in Rotorua!). In addition, we offer up to 40% discount from the daily rates for longer stays!! We are the only hostel in Rotorua that offers a natural outdoor mineral hot spa on-site free for our guests. Nothing beats stargazing or moon-watching while immersed in a bubbling hot pool during a cold cloudless night! We have 25 rooms with 71 beds in various configurations, from singles, doubles, twins, quads, to 4-6 dorms (5-6 bunk beds)). We provide free linen, wifi, DVD rental, coffee and tea, great discounts for long-term stays, package tours and bookings for Mana bus and Naked bus. We also offer free luggage storage and use of a safety deposit box. We have 3 fully equipped kitchens, a TV/DVD room, and laundry facilities. We are just 8 minutes on foot from the bus station and 2 min away from Rotorua Central Mall. We are literally minutes away (on foot) from just about everything that matters in Rotorua! Although we are right in the middle of the city, we have an inner courtyard where our guests can enjoy the sun during cold spells and an outer courtyard where guests can chill off in the shade in warm weather. We have a barbeque for guests to use during those long summer days. Our greatest asset, however, is our friendly and helpful staff who do their best to keep our customers happy and make their stay most memorable.

Stayed two nights. One of my favourite hostels in NZ. There is a spa with water from volcanic reserves underground, saves you money going to a spa. Location is in the centre of town and everything walkable. Best thing is the two asian guys who run the hostel are very friendly and eager to help. They were very helpful with suggesting what companies to do with activities with and didn't push any certain company. They can also get you discounts. My friend also left her earrings in the hostel room and they kindly posted them back. If you looking for a hostel choose this one!

We booked this hostel very last minute and they had a private double available - fantastic!

You'd very easily walk past this place without noticing - it's right in the town centre and all the main shopping streets are a 5-10 minute walk away.

One staff member who checked us in early was exceptional in his help - we can't remember his name, but because we arrived early off the Kiwi Experience bus he checked us in there and then and went straight to make up our room for us. He was also able to arrange our visit to the Hells Gate Spa and get us discount!

The whole hostel is a one story mish-mash of buildings - there are two kitchens, two sets of bathrooms - nice little outdoor and indoor communal areas and little rooms. Our private room was small and warm, but it was quiet even though we were right beside the bathroom. It has the feel of a small community.

The atmosphere here was a chilled one - I got the feeling there were some long term guests, but we enjoyed it because it was respite from the noisy hostels like Base and Nomads.

Don't expect five-star from this place, but do expect no hassle. I would happily return to Spa Lodge.

So much hot water! In the spa, a real spring where the water is changed daily, in the showers, ... lots of space to meet people, near the center of the city, a walk away of the park and waterside where you can see the mud and suffer pools/fumes... I enjoyed my stay!

The most inhabitable, unsafe place I’ve ever stayed. I’ve never left a hostel before, this one I did in the middle of the night for my safety. First my food was stolen when I was out shopping for more food, I put my new shopping in the fridge to go ask management if my food had been moved, she stated ‘no’ & that I could use her fridge. When I went back to the kitchen, my second lot of food was stolen in that ten minutes!!!! I went to my room and realized my window wouldn’t lock. I ended up wedging it shut with a knife from the kitchen... being stolen from twice I was scared of being robbed in the night. The side gate would also not lock giving access to the property to anyone off the street.

This place was the filthiest I’ve ever stayed, furniture and dumped washing machines were all over the yard, old mattresses and chairs outside bedroom.
I attempted to have a shower to zero hot water.

The residents were not welcoming. After watching them wait for a ‘delivery’ they moved into the room next door and began smoking their drugs. In the middle of the night a huge fight broke out, there were things & people smashing into my room. I was scared. I left in the night and found other accommodation for my safety.

Trying to get a refund has been a back and forwards attempt with this place... girls, or anyone, avoid this place for your safety. My refund has now been escalated with booking.com as the accommodation did not pay me back as promised to all parties.

Never, ever, ever again. Terrible

2am. Awake. I'd say wide awake, but that would mean I've had some decent sleep. I'm at the my-eyes-feel-as-if-they're-raccoon-eyes-being-held-open-with-matchsticks phase of "awake". Why am I awake at 2am? Very good question!

Guiding a 3-day tour. Booked in for the night for a double room at the Spa Lodge in Rotorua.

NEVER, E V E R, stay here!

Checked in. Tired after a day of guiding. Obtain my key, go to my room. Sit on my bed - and fall through it!!

Turns out, someone needed some of the slats more than the bed did! I mean, I know I need to lose some weight, but come on!!

Got a new room. Although waited for 15 minutes as the owner tries to find a key to it. Bed holds. Mattress is terrible, but hey, at least I can get some much-needed sleep. Sheets at least appear clean, although I'm not game to give them more than a perfunctory inspection. Pillows? Let's just say I've seen better ones in mice-infested back country huts....

And so much for it being a non-smoking room....

Dude in the next room starts hammering away at something. Walls are so flimsy, it's as if he's bashing on my ear drums directly. I knock on his door, and ask what all the banging is.

"Oh, I've just gotta do some maintenance work on my guitar", says the guy who obviously lives here, but looks - and smells - like he doesn't live anywhere.

"Well, I'm a tour guide, and need to get some sleep, so if you wouldn't mine stopping the banging, that'd be great".

"Oh. Ok, I'll do it in the morning". (Said in a way that suggests he thinks I'm mad for even hinting that after 9pm on a Monday night isn't the perfect time to channel Bob the Builder on your fave stringed instrument).

"Cheers".

Back in my room, I somehow manage to drift off into an uncomfortable slumber.

Some time later, cats start screaming like, well, strangled cats. Little so-and-so's! Lucky we're not in Vietnam, or I'd be having fillet-o-feline for breakfast....

When booking, I'd specifically requested the quietest room.

Sure thing. Right next to the main road, thanks very much.

Every monstrous truck that thunders past literally rattles the windows, walls, and even the bed! Reminds me of one those movies where the dodgy motel which rents by the hour has the cheesy coin-operated "massage" beds in each room. In Invercargill, I lived right next to a freight train line. This is worse....

Go to the toilet. Well, I should say the head, as it's so small/tight it reminds me of the head on a submarine, where you have to remove your overalls in the passage way before reversing into the stall. And of course, as an added bonus, the floor at the base of the bowl is wet. Perfect. Luckily I put my board shorts on, 'cause it seems surf's up.

Interesting sign on the wall:

"This toilet clogs regularly, so if you use more than 8 sheets of paper, please dispose of it in the bin to your right".

There was no bin to my right. Which I'm thankful for. The thought of various people's poo particles permeating the air does not appeal.... In fact, there was nothing to my right except a wall squeezing my shoulder.

So I used 9 sheets of paper only. Didn't want to clog the toilet, but one extra sheet, because hey, I'm a rebel.

I'm just glad I was partially dehydrated....

Head back to my room. Same questionable character next door thinks 2am is an appropriate time to fire up the kettle and crank up the tv.

And cough up a lung.

Perfect.

Now, Rotorua smells like farts. It just does, from all the geothermal activity and sulphurous steam clouds. I don't mind it all that much. I guide here regularly, and am pretty well used to it.

However, I suspect that this place, this "Spa Lodge", purposely uses the town of Rotorua's unique scent to try and mask various odours in the establishment. Note I said try....

So, on a scale of 1-10, I rate this place as: I-don't-care-if-the alternative-is-sleeping-in-the-park; I-will-not -EVER-stay-here-again.

Ever see the movie Bangkok Hilton? Got nothin' on this place.....

Well, I have no choice but to TRY and get some sleep. Guiding all day tomorrow. Scratch that. TODAY. :(

Response from Spa L, Owner at Spa Lodge
Responded 13 Oct 2018
Your venomous opinion of the Spa Lodge is quite contrary to the experience of thousands of who have enjoyed our facilities and services. I can feel your pent-up frustration ----- must be hard to live on the paltry salary of a tourist guide, working for a niggardly tourist company who can only afford to accommodate you in hostels, while other guides get to be billeted in 4-5 star hotels. Grating, is it not? Just driving you bonkers, doesn't it? Yeah, I can empathize with all that resentment and consequent depression. I grant it that you have some (albeit mediocre) writing skills but they are clearly not good enough for anyone to hire you as such or else you wouldn't be a poorly compensated tourist guide until now. Contrary to your protestations, you were initially assigned the quietest room available ---- but somehow, someone's (yours?) bum was hard enough to break one of the 3 x 10 cm timber slats! Yep, we found the broken one and the two missing slats where someone (you?) hid them, just behind the bedboard. Next time just be honest and do not blame somebody if you break something. Just tell me, how on earth could someone break such a piece of timber? You protest too loudly about the trucks. Obviously, you like hyperbole, as a road can never be as noisy as a railway line. You must have been aware, if you did your homework before the tour, that the Spa Lodge is just beside a main road right in the center of town. Just tells me what kind of tourist guide you are. A D-grade, since your company is only willing to pay for backpackers for your accommodation. You compare our toilets to those of submarines ----- again, I bet that you have no idea what you are talking about as, clearly, you have never been to a submarine. You claim that our toilets are small --- maybe it is your ego that is too big. Far as I can remember, you are well below the average size of a kiwi. The floor was probably wet because, like all aspiring firemen, you thought your hose was long enough --- you should stand closer to the toilet bowl if you only got an inch! When you try to quote, quote verbatim, or is this something you have not learned in writing school? The note was for the occasional visitor who uses up half a roll of toilet paper to clean themselves. NOT YOU, you only used 9 sheets! You were probably too busy reading the instructions on the toilet walls to wipe yourself clean. And that is what you smelt -- your unclean bum, rather than Rotorua's hydrogen sulfide as you walked back to your room. And the unwashed dirty clothes in your luggage. In addition, it is clear that you did not even take a shower (as you could not afford to rent a towel). That is why you SMELLED, end of story. And who are you to question the right of anybody to have a snack at 2 AM? And what do you have against your neighbour? Did he look too much like someone you hated in your family? Your father, perhaps? At least your neighbour can pay for his room ----- YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO, my poorly paid tourist guide! You know, if you hate your job so much, you could always try WINZ.

This is my kind of room and it wouldn't be everyone's. Prison cell sized, with older-style furnishings. I love it.
I met so many people here I will meet up with later around NZ, including staff.
I love that Akira has been there for 10 years - I think that really says something about the hostel. I love the cat, and the garden - like a home. And so much knowledge if you want to know about any of the hundreds of activities around Rotorua.
The natural water spa is amazing, especially if you are doing some activities that make your muscles ache. There was always room for anyone to join the spa and the conversation. This was so different to the spa hostel I stayed in in Nelson a week ago where the spa was always full and unwelcoming.
The location is great - easy to get to on a main road, surrounded by food and across the road from the mall. And I parked right outside everyday.

Before choosing Spa Lodge we knew it didn't have good reviews, but most of them just said how old this place was.
We could not find tourists/backpackers/travellers at this place. It only had local people living there, but definitely the worst New Zealanders we met during our 1 month trip around both islands.
At almost 10pm there were children playing in the common areas, which wasn't that bad, as children have to play somewhere. The worst was about to come when at midnight other men (2-3), drunk, (maybe on drugs), were chating with loud voice, singing and playing the guitar, sitting outside our room!
I (wife) went out to kindly ask them to be quiet so we could rest. They told me to "shut the F#%# up!". My husband then went out to, again, to KINDLY ask them to make silence. They tried to HIT him, until a woman went out and took them inside a room. They kept screaming all night long. We couldn't rest at all.
Next morning we woke up early to leave ASAP and we also found other unfriendly guests just being rude.
There was no staff present to help, leave complains.
Pay more and avoid this "hostel", this is not a safe place.

This place is no longer a hostel but used for emergency accommodation for families who are homeless. Kids are running around all day and people are sitting up talking and smoking till late. The place is tired and very run down. They tried to give us a room that stunk of cigarette smoke but managed to move us to another room. The toilets were all shared and were very dirty by morning. Didn't want to go near the spa pool We were due to stay 2 nights but in the morning we left in a hurry. Avoid!

This could actually be a nice hostel however they let kids run wild all day and very early in the morning without any control or consideration for the other guests staying there.
Also locals smoking cannabis outside our room making the whole place stink of weed.
Graffiti scrawled all over the kitchen making it appear run down and neglected.
Free WiFi is the only thing I can think of as a positive for staying here other than it’s central location. If your looking for a decent quiet night sleep AVOID at all costs.
