Hake Lodge Paihia was the best backpacker I stayed in New Zealand. Not only the excellent location, that you can overlook the evening sunset of the beach in the kitchen and lounge. The kitchen facility was great, knife is sharp, stove and plate in good condition it make cooking in the kitchen enjoyable.
Room as clean with nice bed, compare to other backpacker I stayed and experience, this was the best. Staff make nice recommendation of what to go in the local area too. Definitely go back for next trip.

A very nice hostel with well equipped and comfortable dorms. Each bed had it's own curtain, light and electric outlet, thanks to that you can have some privacy while still being able to read/charge your devices. The location is very good, close to the beach and harbour, with a beautiful view onto the bay.

I stayed here in a double room for 2 nights. The location is amazing, right over the road from the beach and the wharf where all the ferries, boats trips and day trips pick up. The lounge and kitchen area even has a sea view, which was unexpected. It is a lovely place to relax. The room was a good size, however it was extremely hot in there when I stayed and the fan didn’t really help. The staff were all super friendly, especially Charlotte, Katie, Els and Steve. Thanks guys!

We were limited in where to book in Paihia as we booked quite late, but were pleasantly surprised by this accommodation.
Back packers hostels have changed a lot since we last used them.
Security was still a concern with poor door locks and window locks, but nothing happened.
Our room was extremely hot with the good weather and large window facing the sun, but cooled down overnight and with a floor fan going.
The reception staff were fine. There was plenty of information around the desk to work out what to do activity wise in the area. We didn’t use their services to book anything.
Really good location in the centre of town. No private parking unfortunately, but they have use of a few spaces in the nearby public car park for a small fee (5 NZD per night).
The room was nothing to write home about (we had a private double with private bathroom), though it was clean. But there is a communal lounge to use and socialise if you wish. And a great kitchen and good facilities and wonderful view.
Plenty of local supermarkets to buy something to cook and loads of restaurants to go to if you don’t want to cook.
WiFi was fairly good, just a bit annoying to keep having to log in each time you left the building.
All in all we probably would stay there again for the location.

Haka is a great location, friendly staff and roomy/bright kitchen and living area. The only issue is the heat and lack of air flow. The 4-bed dorm had a window that is nailed shut permanently. Some dorms did not have windows. The dorm rooms are small and stuffy with no ventilation or air conditioning. We slept with the door open all night even though we were right by the lobby door. Once transferred to a private room, it was better since the window opened. But still too hot to be in the room during the day with the sun beaming in. Should be fine if you don't come during the heat of summer.

Ok, but no thanks. I would rather go elsewhere. 2d night we stayed down the road at a great motel (since we couldn’t stay at Haka lodge again) Much better. The location is great, but very small and squashed and hot, with only a loud rickety fan in there.

Kia ora ejcousinsnz, Thanks for your review. We were disappointed to read your remarks - we do have different room types available from shared dorm rooms, to private rooms with ensuites - perhaps a different room choice may have suited you better? The team would have been able to help you out with the fan - as a precaution, we have carried out a maintenance check on all fans in the property to ensure they are up to standard. Nga mihi, Colette

When we arrived there at New Year Eve, I was happy as we spent 30 mn to look after the backpacker, we were with the Granny 80 and the kids. The woman (the pregnant one with a sufficient air) at the reception didn't almost say Hello and told us that the kids (10 and 12) were not allowed in this place. Unfortunately, I didn't read the policy but it seems under 18 we need to have the manager's authorization. When I asked for the manager she said she was the manager and as we arrived at 05:30 pm we could stay tonight but tomorrow we had to leave. And as we were less than 48 hours booking, we have to pay for the 2 nights as it was the cancellation policy . She didn't even try to find a solution for us, we had a booking for 4 nights and at this moment of the year the Northland was fully packed in our range of price. It totally ruined our NYE and our holidays. She had no empathy, was very arrogant and her attitude was like if she has a kind of power over us to stay or go. She could have told us that we should book the full dorm as it happened in other backpackers. I will never come back to any Haka Lodge. We traveled and stayed in backpackers all around the world with our kids and it never happened! It's amazing how a bad person can ruin everything because she knows she can. Young lady a nice behavior and a little bit of kindness is always appreciated in this situation.
A part of this, the rest of the staff was nice and more comprehensive at least.

Hope I never cross her way again! Bad vibes

Dear Missoca, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us at Haka Lodge Paihia. We do have a strict 18 plus policy, which is across all of our lodge properties in New Zealand. It is up to the managers discretion, as occasionally guests will arrive, and it is too late for them to go elsewhere, which is hard with small children (much like what happened on your arrival). The decision was made to allow you and your family to stay at the lodge for the night of New Years Eve. The manager did offer to assist you with finding alternative accommodation however you did not engage with her. As you mentioned, Northland is very busy at that time of year, especially over Christmas and New Year. Most of the accommodation in the area would have been fully booked. This also explains the 2nd night charged to you. She did cancel and refund you for the 3rd and 4th nights of your booking. I do apologise if you felt that the manager was unhelpful, however this is never our intention. We do hope that you enjoy(ed) the rest of your time in New Zealand. Best regards, Colette

Hi Diana, we can definitely book tours for you in and around the Bay - and up to Cape Reinga. There is a twin tour offer, which includes a discount on both the full day Cape Reinga trip and a half day trip out into the Bay of Islands. You can book this with our reception desk when you arrive at Haka Lodge. Thanks!
