I only intended on staying one night but found this beautiful spot so relaxing and laid back that I stayed for three nights. It had all the amenities I needed plus a perfect view of the falls from my motor home rear window. Management and staff were friendly and helpful.
I will definitely be returning.

The resort is a very friendly, family owned property in a beautiful location. The falls themselves are a few minutes walk away and can be seen from the front of the property. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and have full self catering facilities. There is a restaurant on site or you can eat at the pub at the top of the road. One word of warning though, a car is essential for this property as it is about a five minute drive out of Paihia.

After having difficulty finding accomodation one evening during our New Zealand trip, we decided to book the next night's bed before leaving where we were. Wanting to be at the Bay of Islands area, we consulted the free 'Jason accomodation guide' that we had picked up in a tourist i-site. From there we chose the Haruru Falls Resort Panorama, a short drive from Paihai and they had vacancies. The blurb in the guide stated that they were licenced and had a restaurant, just what we wanted, a change( and treat) from self catering for one evening.
We arrived early in the day, and couldn't get into our room but that didn't matter AND the proprioter was really helpful putting our perishables in her fridge till our room was ready.
However when we went back to get in our room and have a swim in the large pool, we read through the info in the room file. There was no sample menu only a take away pizza menu. Upon enquiring , no the restaurant wasn't open 'we haven't got a chef 'was the off hand reply' but I can ring for a pizza for you', . We didn't really want take away pizza, however when the pizza place was rung, they weren't open that night; we were given Indian and Thai takeaway menus 'but there is a charge for delivery'
No thank you
Dinner that evening was at a restaurant in Paihai.... with me driving not drinking. So much for a relaxing treat!
The room we had was ok.
At one time there had been a large double bed in the room with the bed side tables fastened to the wall in the appropriate places.................not any longer, we couldn't reach the tables from the bed. The shower/sit-up bath tub was rather grubby (maybe just it's age)
Looking in the car park there were only 2 cars there so presumed that only 2 rooms were occupied that night ( although the camping area was quite busy), so why were we put in adjacent rooms? I didn't really want to listen to their tv when I was trying to sleep, or be woken up by it next morning.
The motel is in a lovely situation looking out over the Falls, and the sun shines on it as it rises, great picture opportunity
But as the title says, beware, check before you book if you want an on site restaurant as is advertised.

The staff that I spoke to had fluent English, were very helpful and we fully enjoyed our 3 night stay. My family and I were on a journey to cleanse and refresh our wairua from the busy life in Auckland. We were in the rooms above which had the best views of Haruru Falls. When you sat out on the balcony your wairua was at total peace (I'll savour those memories forever). We were only sleeping in the rooms and out having fun everyday. I highly recommend this place if you are needing privacy. We also shared the communal kitchen one day (by choice) which was fine, the other guests were great as my wider whanau had shown up and we had too much food to cook :) We were not fussed with the pool being empty as we managed to get out on the kayaks that were on site - you have got to try the kayaks!!! If you have high expectations when it comes to accommodation - kei te pai tera - maybe this place is not for those who are fussed about the little things. Overall, excellent value for money, we loved the rooms, the grounds, the atmosphere and the people. We have planned our next trip back in October :) We leave Haruru with wonderful/precious memories and our wairua has HEALED ...

We came to Paihia for a family reunion and multiple familes choose to stay at this resort for the handy location and lovely pool.
We would not recommend this property for the following reasons...
* The hosts do not speak English and are not at all friendly or welcoming
* the pool was closed and there was no forewarning of this when we booked
* the rooms were filthy and smelly and when we complained they gave us cleaning product and rubber gloves so we could clean it ourselves
* The BBQ was filthy so we couldn't use it.
* The grounds and gardens are run down
* They ask you to not drink alcohol in your room.

Response from Yewon Hwang, General Manager at Haruru Falls Motel and Conference Centre
Responded 9 Oct 2022
Thank you for your review. We apologise for the experience. But would like to assure you this is not the case any more. Our swimming pool is currently being renovated due to flood damage. Our rooms are refurbished and we are constantly looking for ways to enhance guest experience.

Excellent stay at the campsite, with complimentary kayak hire down a beautiful, peaceful river beside Haruru falls. Michael is a very friendly and accommodating owner who has recently taken ownership of the business. I would strongly recommend staying here

Peaceful one night stay here. Gary who lives on site welcomed us and he was so helpful, showing us around the site, ensuring we were comfortable. We actually ended up being the only people on the site for the night which was cool! The on site facilities were great (the kitchen has everything you could need), the wifi was excellent and the view was brilliant. A hidden gem.

When we checked in here we very soon became very disappointed with what we found, If it was not late in the afternoon and if I had not prepaid for our stay here, I would have looked for accommodation elsewhere. I was of the view that if we moved on that there would be little or no chance of getting our money back,
Reluctant to do so, we decided to try to endure this dreadful place.
The furnishings are worn and decrepit. They should have been replaced years ago. This establishment is dirty and scruffy. There were bare wires hanging out from a lampshade and the bulb needed replacement. The Mirror in the bathroom was corroded around the edges and grimy. Carpets were dirty and in desperate need of a good clean.
The complimentary WiFi was pretty useless. It lasted about 20 minutes which is hardly sufficient to catch up with e mails and news from home.
The Receptionist was abrupt, most unfriendly and rude,
The sun lounges around the pool were just disgusting and where fit only to be thrown in the bin. There was a "Do Not Use" sign on a broken swing.
There were three old deformed wire coat hangers in the bedroom for clothing hanging on a nail
This entire establishment should be demolished and rebuilt. I could see nothing of virtue about this Motel except that it is located in what otherwise would be an idyllic location.
The motel had the feel of a 1950's Holiday Camp which has fallen on bad times.
Don't be fooled by the website which shows a smart apartment because as far as I can tell is "left empty for show"
So bad was this place that I feel compelled to make a complaint to the New Zealand Tourist Board concerning the allocation and use of a 4 Star Motel grading for this place.

I don't even know what to start with... We spent a few days there in the summer and I wish I've never chosen that place. Never in my life have been treated so badly by a hotel/ motel "manager"(although we have been camping in paihia for the last 8 years). We were there with guests from overseas and it just wasn't a good impression. Anyway, the campground was horrific. there is only about 5 cm of soil and grass on top of concrete so it was impossible to stabalise the tent with the bolts. The kitchen was in a terrible state and the toilets the same. We had to move some of our guests to a motel room because of the rain and things weren't good there either. beds were really soft and water pressure in the showers unacceptable.
The manager lady treated us with disrespect and she was very much unprofessional. She got really drunk on new years eve and became irrational and caused a big commotion. Just not a good way for anyone camping there to start the new year.
the kids trampoline was very old and very unsafe with some of the springs missing. We had to pay $5 to use the bbq (just to heat up some saussages) plus a deposit and when we suggested that we share the bbq with some of the other campers she went crazy again. they also had to pay the 5$ plus the deposit.
We are not the kind of people that create problems and to be honest we're not fussy either. But this is one place I WILL NEVER GO AGAIN.
Just be aware that if you go there the manager will probably promise you the world and then treat you like crap. The scenery is really nice but I don't suggest anyone put up with everything that is going on there just for the view. And by the way the previous year we camped right next door at Falls Motel and Waterfront Campground and we had a wonderful, wonderful time. The managers there are very helpful and they clean constantly that place.
I believe that some of the good reviews on this site are written by the people working there or maybe by the manager herself just to save their name. And you can see that they write more about what you can do around the area rather than the facilities. Don't trust them!!! Don't let them distroy your holiday! Paihia is a very nice place and there are many many other places you can stay to enjoy it.

We were packed in liked sardines and had to share only three showers and three toilets offered to Women. The toilets needed to be cleaned as marks that were there when we arrived were there when we left!! (a decent clean twice a day would have solved this problem). Showers had mould growing in the grout, around soap containers and in the corners - one shower was badly leaking and nothing was done about it. The tiles were so slippery that I'm sure OSH would have a field day. The ceiling was covered in sand flies and water from the steam as there was little to no ventilation. The kitchen was dated, dirty and inadequate for the number of people camping on site. The only positive was the pool which looked clean and the view. Would never stay again and will advise others not to stay either.
