Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed 2 nights at this motel during a month of travels around NZ. It was our least favourite. We booked the trip about 18 months before travelling and were originally booked to stay in the Sea Spray Suites but our agent changed our booking to this motel about a month before we travelled, something about room availability there. We didn't dispute the change however, as our booking showed as being allocated a Junior Suite - Waterfront at the Kingsgate, and this time breakfast was included, so it looked promising for a nice stay over Valentine's Day. When we arrived we had been allocated a ground floor "King" room (419), looking into the central parking courtyard, and straight at the cars parked outside our window, so no sea view at all. We queried this with reception who advised that they were fully booked and that this category was what our agent had booked. To be fair to the hotel, our agent confirmed she had made a mistake with the booking, so it was not the hotel's fault, but do double check that you are booked into the type of room you are expecting, as our room felt dark and miserable, although the facilities within it were fine and unlike another recent reviewer, we had no issues with the plumbing. The hotel itself is nicely located, and if you did have a waterfront room I think it would make a big difference. We only got to enjoy that view at breakfast. However the dining room itself really was 70s motel style - long tables set up for coach parties (3 coaches staying whilst we were there!) and it felt more like a school dining hall. The breakfast itself matched that style - a range of tinned typed fruits in large plastic trays, cereal and basic hot items. Uninspiring, so although it was included in our rate it was disappointing. We didn't see anyone using the pool out front and we didn't have time to try it so I'm not sure if it was heated or not. I don't know what we paid for this motel as it was part of a package via an agent, but I would only stay here again if I got a very cheap deal and a seafront room - and would probably bypass the breakfast offering and find something amongst the cafes in town (just a few minutes walk). Charlotte's Kitchen served us a wonderful Valentine's dinner on their terrace on the jetty (within site of the hotel) so that at least cheered us up after we arrived - would recommend dining there.

We stayed in 14 properties over the course of our recent trip to both islands in NZ. Kingsgate was in our opinion the worst property by far. Although the property was in a wonderful setting our inconveniences over our 3 night stay were significant, remedies were not provided to very poor plumbing issues - room toilet function had to be repaired once yet worked poorly throughout our stay, sink faucet was loose, shower was poorly designed and our shower / bath area floor was soaked and extremely slippery during / after each use. I do not believe the rate we paid per night was in any way appropriate for our stay.

Great stay at this motel which is well positioned on the main road and a short walk from the Wharf and bus terminus. Clean, modern hotel with well furnished room - tv/ sky/tea, coffee facilities etc - housekeeping daily. The reception staff are helpful, knowledgeable and lots of tourists info available. I would certainly stay here again and would recommend .

It is a motel and not a hotel (as the name suggested). We initially had booked for 2 nights but checked out after one. For the price paid, it was just not worth it. Location was good in terms of walking distance to eating places.

Bed comfy, room clean and comfy. Restaurant great. Staff friendly. Separate toilet which is always handy. Also a bath. Stairs to room got exhausting after back and forth few times, on hot days. Shower really low water pressure. View from restaurant beautiful.

The location of the hotel is perfect for the town and views over the sea, the staff including Tom and Janine were the most helpful, kind and friendly people I’ve come across in my 35 years of travelling overseas. The beds were very comfortable, the shower was excellent and the layout of the suite suited our family very well. The breakfast had plenty of options all with a table looking over the sea. The hotel is good value for money and we would go back again.

We made our 2 night booking at the last minute. The location was excellent, on the main road in the middle of Paihia. The room was clean and tidy and very comfortable. The bathroom and facilities were very good and it suited want we wanted for our accommodation. The service on check-in was very good and helpful. We used the pool which was slightly heated and pleasant.

Hotel rooms are generally clean. I thought it was quite unusual for the shower cubicle to be raised above floor level , i.e. you need to take one step up. Somehow the floor becomes very wet after a shower. Can be quite annoying stepping on wet floor towel and having to mop up excess water. Some parts of the carpet running along the corridor is bald from wear and tear. Time to renew the carpet.

The Kingsgate is a great comfortable friendly place to stay . Would recommend. The restaurant staff were exceptional in friendliness and attending to any special requests. The hotel itself is just opposite the beach and easy walking distance to every thing including buses and ferries
