Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Where do we begin? The sign on the country road is unpretentious. You drive through the front gate and something wonderful happens. As a tired traveler you are amazed at the manicured grounds and the pristine external appearance of your accommodation. You are greeted warmly by Kerry who single handedly maintains an unbelievable property at the river's edge. Before you even think about looking at your room you can't help walking into the gardens along spacious trails admiring the flora. The elevated grounds slope gracefully down to the river and allow a peaceful view if the hills beyond.
Now it is time to meet Karen and see your host's chateau. This house shows what a genius architect can accomplish...modern, tasteful, efficient, warm, understated, inviting. Moreover the house and its side pavilions sit perfectly on the property commanding a tranquil overview of the forest, gardems, river, and hills. The wooden decks around the house make it so easy to think "how good is this?".
Your room is special too...every feature is thoughtfully provided, even stocked with your complimentary bottle of NZ wine, truffles, tea and coffee, fresh milk in the mini-fridge, and a cheese and cracker plate or fresh muffins just in case you are hungry from your travels.
Perhaps a late afternoon chat with karen and Kerry over wine.
After a very restful night its time for breakfast. Karen will satisfy you with fresh fruit, eggs, meats, and special treats such as chutney mushroom tomatoes to die for.
Its time to go with regrets but very happy memories. This place is very special.

My partner and I had the absolute pleasure of staying at the River Retreat in Haruru. Karen and Kerry were so welcoming and hospitable, the facilities were amazing and if we had our time again we'd stay longer without a second thought.

We will definitely endeavour to be back and recommend this to any and everyone.

A truly exceptional B & B providing very high standards in a delightful setting. Karen and Kerry are extremely good hosts and attention to detail is first rate. This was a remarkable find and frankly the experience exceeded our wildest expectations. Set a short drive from town the accomodation in the grounds of their beautiful home was tremendous. As international travellers themselves they have a wonderful understanding of the needs of discerning guests . Highly unlikely you will be able to better this experience and the breakfasts were both imaginative, healthy and superbly presented. Absolutely no hesitation in making the highest recommendation possible for River Retreat and Kerry and Karens great hospitatlity. Thank you.

We enjoyed our stay a few days ago at this beautiful place sooooo much! Best breakfast ever! Fresh fruits, best eggs and things aside!
The room with a wonderful view is big and comfortable. We had all we need and more. Every day specials like cakes, cookies, crackers with a choice of cheese.
You can also go down to the river and use the kayaks for free. You can have a barbecue riverside or just enjoy the view from above from your veranda. It is really so nice, new and clean. Thank you Karen!! Best host from the bottom of your heart.
Greetings Daniela and Chris from Germany.

It's out in the country, overlooking the River Waitangi. You need a car. The rooms are spotless. The breakfast excellent. There is a beautiful grounds to walk in. The hosts are friendly and as helpful as possible. The guest rooms are set off to the side of the main house and offer privacy and a nice outside garden area. The facilities are modern. We had a great stay and it was well located to visit the wide range of holiday destinations in the surrounding region.

Absolutely beautiful, understand why this is 5 stars. Fabulous hosts, friendly and helpful. Karen and Kerry are wonderful cooks and enjoy a glass of wine or two😜. The rooms are luxurious, with comfy a bed, silky sheets and great pillows(so important). We loved over looking the garden and river, cooking our own bbq on our deck, enjoying a glass wine. Simply the best !!!!!!

Roger and Jen were very lovely hosts and the location and setting is just serene and lovely. They make sure all the comforts of home are there for you to enjoy and no stone is left unturned in the detail including chocolates by the bed and a luffa cloth in the bathroom. Brilliant spot of heaven when travelling in the Bay of Islands. All there suggestions for dinners and excursions proved the best. You cannot do wrong. I'll defiantly book again next trip up North.

My partner and I have just had a fantastic weekend at the River retreat. Not being regular b&b people we are now convinced as it offer so much more than a hotel or motel. The rooms are just luxury and being semi detached from the house (connected by covered glass walkway) they are very private. The place offers more than you would expect. We even went kayaking down the Waitangi river on kayaks supplied. Not only was the property stunning (river, gardens, birds) but the hosts were so friendly and knowledgeable on everything in the area. We had a great breakfast in the morning and a wonderful chat and glass of wine on the decks with Jan and Roger( the hosts) in the evening. Couldn't recommend highly enough

Excellent quality room with an amazing view into secluded bush. Hosts Karen and Kerry were very attentive and made a lovely cooked breakfast every morning. A 10 minute drive to Paihia and Waitangi, so close to all boat tours without being in the midst of all the tourists.

Hello Linda We have two rooms the River Room with views of the glen and river and the Garden room which opens up to a garden area. Both room are the same but have different views. The Garden Room has a patio at the back of the unit which leads to garden and seating, the River Room has patio on the side which looks over the glen and river. Hope this helps and we look forward to meeting you soon. Regards Karen
