Set high on Bluff Hill Cobden Garden is a perfect location for a visit to Napier and Hawke’s Bay. Our very large, comfortable room and well appointed en-suite provided wide views north over the land exposed by the 1931 earthquake. Our hosts, Rayma and Phil could not have been more welcoming, ready with maps and advice and even happy to organise a restaurant booking after the long journey on SH5. Breakfasts were freshly and individually prepared using local produce and, as usual, a chance to share ideas with other guests. A special treat was the evening aperitif with home baked canapés and a selection of local wine shared on the verandah where guests and hosts could relax together.

We do appreciate your wonderful review and especially as it came through when we were facing the consequences of Cyclone Gabrielle. Thank you for reaching out to us at that time and we are so pleased you got to come earlier and found everything to your liking. Our location at the top of Bluff Hill does challenge some people but the views and the peace and quiet reward those who do come. Relaxing with our guests over a wine and hors d'oeuvres is a plus for us too. Again thank you.

Rayma and Phillip are generous and congenial hosts. Their hospitality make this a perfect bed and breakfast experience. In comparison to luxury hotels, this bed and breakfast offered many more amenities and the personal touch that enriched our stay. Rayma and Phillip happily accommodated our special needs and have a wonderful plan for enabling guests to interact and get to know each other as well as getting to know them. We were greeted warmly and invited to join other guests for tea on the veranda of this charming colonial-style home. Guests from around the world mingled and got acquainted. Happy hour, with wine and hors d’oeuvres, offered another opportunity. It was so welcoming and relaxing!

Our room was spacious, thoughtfully appointed with colonial-style furnishings and tasteful artwork, an en suite bathroom (with adequate towel racks and hooks!), sitting area, drawer and closet space for unpacking, and very comfortable bed.

And the breakfast! First, there’s a full choice of cold breakfast options that would be sufficient on its own. For the hot breakfast, most bed and breakfasts with which I’m familiar have a repertoire of 6-7 options that they rotate, offering a different one each morning. Here, it’s like a restaurant menu, and you can choose whatever you want from the list of options. Delicious, healthy, robust breakfasts to start your day, leisurely shared while conversing with other guests (although you can choose the time so all guests may not eat at the same time; all three couples when we were there ate at the same time, a real plus for getting to know them, hear about their families and their travel adventures).

We appreciated our stay and highly recommend it to you!

Oh where to start? Such an amazing account of your stay with us. Thank you. It is great that you (and so many other guests) enjoy the opportunities we provide to socialise with other guests. It is of course a wonderful time for us also. We are pleased you enjoyed being able to choose your breakfast. Occasionally it does get a little frenetic cooking the range that guests choose but we prefer that guests have what they like on their plate. Again thank you, safe safe and best wishes.

Rayma and Phillip spare no detail to ensure that their guests are well looked after. They were extremely warm and inviting hosts who were genuinely interested in making my stay comfortable and memorable. The room and ensuite were spacious and lovely. Drinks and canapes on the verandah in the early evening were an especially nice touch for someone travelling alone for work. The breakfast was delicious and cafe quality. I am looking forward to staying here again as it would be impossible to beat!

Thank you for such a generous review Justine and we are so pleased you mentioned that it was a good experience when you were travelling alone for business. We have had business guests in the past and feel it is an ideal accommodation solution for them as whilst you have the ability to have privacy and time to catch up on emails and phone calls there is also the opportunity to share a glass of wine and chat with hosts who enjoy learning about the lives of their guests and in your case the interesting business (and products!) you have. All the best and we look forward to hosting you again.

Phillip and Rayma are super nice and friendly. It was nice meeting and talking to them. They go far beyond to look after the guests and let you feel welcomed. House is beautiful inside out. Room is spacious and spotless, having everything we need. A glass of port from them was a sweet retreat after coming back at late night. The breakfast was very impressive. We were offered a menu for the mains like a restaurant, apart from the continental options such as fruits, croissants, toast with butter and jams, fruit juice and a proper expresso machine made flat white. A perfect stay.

Thank you so much for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we do hope that we will get to host you again. It is very pleasing that New Zealanders are enjoying what we offer as we do realise that for some it is a new experience to stay in a B&B. We enjoyed our conversations with you and would certainly like to learn more about the lifestyle you have in Hamilton. Have a wonderful safe and happy 2021. Phillip and Rayma

Stayed here for 2 nights while wine tasting in the Napier Hastings area. Warmly welcomed by Rayma and Phillip who are the consummate, knowledgeable hosts. They proved an excellent resource (with maps) on which wineries to visit, where to eat and where the best drinks were made in bars around town. There was off-street parking.
The room was large, clean, comfortable and the bed provided an excellent nights sleep. The location affords a very quiet night. There was an upstairs sitting room with view for guests and this included a complementary drinks fridge.
Arriving back to the room set up for sleep with a small decanter of port and chocolates beckoning was a delight.
Rayma and Phillip encouraged excellent (by that I mean of a very high quality) canapés and drinks in the late afternoon. I chatted for some time, with them providing an interesting history of the house, location and changes the quake has wrought. Fascinating and enjoyable.
The large and highly tasty cooked breakfast really set me up for a serious spot or wine tasting- if only other B and B breakfasts were of the same ilk! Beautiful fresh squeezed juices, homemade jams and marmalade, excellent tea and coffee accompaniments. - you could equally choose the cold breakfast options.
I have stayed at many B and B's in many countries but few have achieved the hospitality and quality levels seen here.
Rayma and Phillip should be congratulated for achieving the perfect B and B experience. A 6 star experience particularly suited to solo or couples who wish to indulge in luxury. A great base for wine tasting in the area.

Oh David what can we say? Thank you so much for such a complimentary review. A review that covers so many aspects of our hosting and B&B and the many opportunities in Hawke's Bay and Napier. After 21 years of hosting it is reassuring that what we do is still relevant and appreciated. Thank you so much and all the best.

We stayed here for two nights. Early each evening before heading out for dinner we were invited to join Philip and Rayma on their patio for complimentary wine tasting along with some delicious snacks or cheese etc. It was great to chill out with other guests.
The rooms are of an excellent standard.
It's a bit tricky to find the place and you need good legs if you want to walk to town and back on an evening as it's high on the hill.

We booked this to be pampered - and the result was beyond what we could have hoped. From the moment we arrived our host and hostess were friendly, helpful and provided a level of service that was second to none. We enjoyed the extremely comfortable bed, the spa bath in the bathroom and the warmth and comfort of our room. The cooked breakfast was superb - and the evening drinks, fun. We found our hosts were a fountain of knowledge and their recommendations for both activities and restaurants were all spot on.

Our 4 night stay was amazing. First time we have ever stayed in a B&B and what an incredible experience. Phillip & Rayma were so welcoming and helpful. The little extra's like wine & nibbles before you headed out for dinner, port & chocolates in the room each night when you returned was unexpected but very much appreciated. Rooms were so spacious, clean and fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. Breakfast was 5 star quality and simply delicious. Nothing was too much bother and Phillip even cleaned the windscreen of the car before we left. Cannot recommend this B&B more highly.

Thank you so much for your amazing review. We are so glad we made your Napier B&B experience memorable and that you appreciated and noticed the little extras. Over the years we have hosted many guests but not so many New Zealanders so it is really satisfying that we are exceeding the expectations of our fellow countrymen. Thank you again and we wish you all the best. Hopefully we will see you again.

Staying at charming Cobden Garden on Napier Hill was a highlight of our 5 week trip through New Zealand. Rayma and Phil are wonderful welcoming hosts who generously gave of their time to talk about New Zealand. We had many questions since this was our first (but hopefully not our last) trip to stunningly gorgeous New Zealand. Cobden Garden is beautifully located in an upscale quiet neighborhood overlooking wetlands and nice gardens. Getting to downtown Napier with all the beautiful Art Deco buildings and restaurants as well as the wineries was very easy by car. Our room was large and the bed was very comfortable and came with a beautiful large modern bathroom. The well presented made to order breakfasts that Rayma and Phil provide are outstanding. They also made excellent restaurant, excursion and winery recommendations. Staying at intimate well-run bed and breakfasts like Cobden Garden made a huge difference in our enjoyment and understanding of New Zealand.

We very much enjoyed our stay with Phillip and Rayma, they were most welcoming and their house is delightful. I was lovely to sit on the Veranda in the evening over some wine that Phillip had chosen and discuss things ,we really felt we got to know them a bit and life in New Zealand. Delicious breakfast with lots of Home Made jams an stewed fruits.

Thank you for the lovely comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. As we are committed to providing the best a B&B can offer we would love to be able to understand what services you did not experience at Cobden Garden B&B would improve the stay. From the arrival afternoon tea ( after the 2pm check in) and chat about what to do, guidance with deciding which restaurant to eat at and making reservations, help with luggage, turn down with port and chocolates, full servicing of rooms each day, free wifi, parking and at departure cleaning of the car windscreen, we feel we do offer a great deal to our guests and of course a choice of cooked breakfast from a menu. We do understand some people have difficulty negotiating the hill to find us but once there the location has amazing views across the bay to the mountains and garden and is quiet and peaceful being a no exit street. And 10 - 15 minutes walk to the centre of the city and Marine Parade. Again thank you for your kind comments. We hope you are keeping safe at home in England .
