Winner of the Art Deco Supreme Award. The owners of Napier's County Hotel wished to combine the qualities and ambience of some of the finest hotels in the world. They have achieved this by incorporating fine service, fine dining and luxurious accommodation in line with 1930's Art Deco characteristics of Napier. The County Hotel is situated in the centre of Napier which is considered to be the 'Art Deco Capital of the South Pacific' and has captivated the emotions and senses of countless admirers. Originally built for the Hawke's Bay County Council in 1909, The County Hotel is one of only two significant buildings to have survived the massive 1931 earthquake. Faithfully refurbished as a boutique hotel, the County Hotel now stands as Napier's premier Hotel. The hotel is home to an extremely popular, multi award winning Wine Street Restaurant, the superb Churchill's Champagne Lounge, an intimate library, well-appointed function areas, conference facilities and eighteen luxurious guest rooms and offer a variety of accommodation packages. Come and enjoy this architectural masterpiece with its atmosphere of conventional luxury and allow yourself to be pampered by the attentive service of our devoted staff.

Detailed Reviews
We have just come back from an amazing mid-winter getaway to Napier, staying at the County Hotel. This historic but perfectly restored and very comfortable hotel is conveniently located in downtown Napier, close to attractions such as Art Deco city center, Museum, Marine parade and Bluff Hill , and within a half hour drive of many Hawkes Bay wineries. From the moment we arrived we were treated like VIPs, nothing was too much trouble for the friendly staff. It felt like the lovely hands-on owners, Angie and Chris, set themselves a goal of making every guest feel special. We loved our room and enjoyed the breakfasts and dinners at the hotel restaurant so much that we extended our stay. We would recommend this hotel for a couples getaway, and will definitely stay there again. Thank you, Angie, Chris, Lisa and Sue for looking after us!

Our group of four couples from Wellington and Auckland met in the middle and booked four of the beautiful luxury rooms for 2 nights. The library, with host Chris' complimentary port was a lovely touch and well used by our group as a gathering spot. The staff and hosts were really welcoming and generous. Chris, an absolute character, made our weekend a memorable one. The rooms were spotless, and quiet, and I loved the little weather reports under the door in the mornings - gave it a personal touch. The Churchills bar is worth hanging at- we were very well looked after here by Chris. We also ate dinner at the hotel- the beef wellington was divine. Would definitely like to stay again, and would highly recommend.

Myself and my partner cannot stop raving about this hotel. We arrived to this boutique hotel that was like stepping straight into 1930s Art Deco that Napier is famous for, along with all the charm and hospitality from the moment we checked in until the moment we left. The hotel staff were welcoming, polite and professional befitting such a high standard accommodation. The hotel is a location right in the heart of Napier and within walking distance of a number of bars and restaurants, however how could we leave when we were put under the spell of such a wonderful venue and experience. Getting to our room we were greeted with a personalised welcome card to our room which was well supplied, spacious and very comfortable. with an excellent and tastefully decorated in the art deco style, with a tastefully done bathroom and well stocked mini bar. Exploring the hotel is an experience in and of itself with all its nooks and crannies that boast knick-knacks from a forgotten time of "opulence for opulence sake" while still being very functional. With modern amenities and very well catered for rooms. Coming to the first floor we came across the library that is obviously meant for use with wingback chairs for comfortable seating. I felt I could have relaxed and whiled all my time away with a good book and cozy atmosphere. Next was the Churchill Bar. A mix of cocktail lounge and the charm of a familiar pub the staff were fantastic and humorous mixing great drinks for a warm evening. This will definitely be a stop off point for all future trips even when passing through the fair city as we were treated with familiarity and friendliness that makes even the weariest of travellers feel at home. Our evening then went on to Wine Street restaurant. As a couple of foodies who enjoy a classy meal the restaurant lived up to its reputation. With polite and personable staff. A nightcap in the Churchill would not have been the same without the lively bartender. Our morning breakfast was light but filling and would not have been as great without the banter and conversation with the staff. Overall as a frequent traveIler, I can confidently put the County Hotel at the top of the list of locations I have visited and will be making it one of my frequently visited Hotels. To Angela and Chris along with their staff we cant thank you enough for making our anniversary getaway so spectacular by being so welcoming and polite with a world class boutique hotel we are sure to return to.

We have just had a three-night stay at the County Hotel, our third. As always, this place is a home away from home: its comfy, cosy and the staff are always so friendly and helpful. It's in a quiet part of town and there was no traffic noise, so we had good night's sleep. It's central location means that several restaurants and cafes are within walking distance. There is a car park provided in a most convenient location, just across the street. The hotel is great value for money and we highly recommend it to anyone considering a stay in Napier.

Stayed in the County Hotel for four nights February and have to say the staff and owner are very nice and helpful too, the rooms are traditional style and all have names not numbers, they add nice touches like cakes put in your room in the afternoon and port in the library you can have on a help yourself basis. The reception staff are polite and friendly, sometimes it’s the people who make all the difference to how a hotel ticks and the County Hotel excels in this. Restaurant food was the best we had in Napier, other venues we tried were not as good, so thank you all at the County, well done. James and Sheila

This hotel offers something different to your large corporate brands. It has 18 rooms and offers a more personal service. Rooms are sympathetically decorated, oak panels, art deco lighting and working antique telephone. Started well as we parked in secure parking opposite hotel. We were unloading our cases when a car pulled up and out got a man who introduced himself as a member of staff arriving to work and proceeded to help us with our cases. We stayed 2 nights bed and breakfast in the Tui room. The hotel has a Colonial/ English gentleman's club feel. It's privately owned by an English man who I hope will take it as a compliment when I describe him as a mildly eccentric character. All staff are very friendly and helpful, the owner is on site and regularly in attendance. We dined in the hotels restaurant the first night. Excellent food, they obviously have a very good chef.My fillet steak was delicious. Extensive breakfast choice both hot and cold, nothing was too much trouble.Had the impression they were happy to accommodate any amendments to the menu you required. Hotel organised a wine tasting trip for us the next day which was most enjoyable. On our second night we ate at Churchills the hotels bistro pub. I had a steak sandwich and commented to the waitress that it was very tasty. She informed me that was because it was the same high quality as I had in the restaurant the previous night. From experience that usually isn't the case. Nice touches like decanters of Port in reception and library for guests to help themselves to free of charge, yes you heard me right. We are touring New Zealand for 3 weeks, my wife summed it up perfectly when she said she could have happily just stayed here.

It was quite nostalgic staying in an old and historic hotel. Didn't expect my kids to like it but they did. They especially enjoyed the library where my youngest played her first game of chess.
We stayed in Tui room for 2 nights and didn't have any problem whatsoever. The beds (they placed another single bed as we booked for 3 pax) were comfortable and the room, including the toilet, is very clean and has no foul smell.
Angela and all the staff we met during our stay were all so friendly and welcoming. We had a wonderful time.

Be prepared for a warm welcome and a attractive, comfortable room with freshly cooked mini muffins on arrival. The hotel also has a large library with big table for sitting around, chatting and having a lovely port. Perfect way to end the night...... Little personal touches abound - fruit on the piano with a knife and plate to take to your room, lovely iced water with lemon at reception, little note put under your door each morning letting you know the weather and local information. Such a great location - tasty restaurants, art galleries, organic food shop, wine bar all on the same block. Beach and gardens just up and accross the road. Fantastic place and lovely staff. Sitting in the front bar of the hotel very nice too!

I booked through the Wotif website and all through that process Wotif said there was to be no charges onto my card unless I was at the Hotel. Even when I put my card details in the site they said that there will be no charges on my card. When The County Hotel recieved my card details they took a $20 transaction out of my acc to "TEST" my card "WITHOUT MY AUTHORITY". I would've been ok with it had they called me and ask for authorisation but they didn't. The guy Graham I spoke to said that is the way they do it. Well Graham that attitude and arrogance has cost you a booking for 6 mostly big fellas who also eat and drink a lot. I wouldve thought that in the current economic situation they would've wanted a booking and when challenged on the unauthorised charge they wouldve refunded it immediately however they are saying I have to cancel through some other way All this hassle over 20 bucks. The courtesy of one phone call Graham and this wouldn't have happened. I would also point out that I called the hotel yesterday and was promised a call back this morning, Graham couldn't be bothered to make that ph call either and I had to call him back.

First thing is nothing to do with the hotel
Don't go to Napier on Monday or Tuesday , food options very limited
Now to hotel
Booked for tonight but because of Cyclone Hale stayed for 3
The welcome was good and efficient. There is a free car park just across the street and a drop off area in front for unloading. Well done Graham.
The building is treat. It is a converted council building apparently and there are endless quirks like safes used as storage and also embedded in the walls.
The attention to detail in making this a restored Art Deco building is second to none. Even the light switches are a thrown back to another age
When the storm hit we were due to drive Napier to Gisborne but the County and the hotel in Napier advised strongly against it
The lady who is the GM I thin, Angie, was lovely she checked every single website for road conditions and helped me to all the Gisborne hotel and the connections were appalling
She then jiggled things around and gave us the same room.
Housekeeping was spot on and the housekeeping staff were so nice.
Rooms were great and well appointed in completely same style as hotel
There is a (VERY EXPENSIVE) Laundromat just next door it has no association with hotel.
Ironically the day we stayed was one of only two gloriously sunny days in NZ!
The other upside of adding on was I got to eat at Wine street the hotels restaurant
A very classy experience
The food was very good and well prepared and tasty and from very good ingredients,
Served by Natasha... this young lady is a delight and pleasant and helpful and works hard. Natasha was ably assisted by Angie once again
The wine list was great and some clssy wines on there
Well done to all of you at The County.

Yes, a large off-street lot at a small fee. There is also on-street parking in front of the hotel. We snagged a free on street space on a weekend.
We do have private carparking available directly opposite our hotel at a charge of $9 per night.
Sorry, that's about the only thing we didn't use so I am unsure if there is one onsite, though there is a laundromat next door (called "Liquid").
