Detailed Reviews
Large space. Location good. 20 min walk to napier to the right. Left to harbour bars. The gin trap being great! Feels a bit tired. Few cockroaches on stairs when we arrived and still there when we left...feels like it needs a good freshen up... rubbish emptied daily and fresh towels but no clean sheets... okay over weekend but traffic noise through week terrible as facing the port. Great views and sunset. But not sure we would book again.

We stayed here for a couple of nights whilst visiting Napier.
The Breakwater apartments are surprisingly spacious and thus offer real good value for money. The two reasons we choose Breakwater.
We stayed in apartment 9 which has a nice view of the bay and the port. It offers a large living room with a sizeable kitchen. Kitchen is reasonable equipped. There are two bedrooms. Only one bathroom though which is a bit challenging with teenagers. At least there is a separate toilet.
It's an easy walk to local cafés, bars and restaurants. Its only a 5 minute drive to the beautiful Art Deco centre of Napier.
The only draw back is the freight trains rumbling past.
Reception staff at Breakwater hotel was a bit unfriendly, very unusual for NZ.
Would I stay here again? Yes, with a large crowd.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment for a week - lots of room for us and reasonably well appointed. As mentioned in another review a couple of things could do with attention but they are small things and didn't detract too much. Great to be able to do laundry and internal garage is useful. For about the same price as a hotel these are great value. Beds are queen size so quite small.

We stayed in apartment 2. The photos provided for Booking.com are very misleading. The view from the room is represented to be a fabulous bay view when in fact the apartment is directly opposite and looks straight into the port (as shown by the photos below). There are large trucks entering and exiting the port directly opposite the apartment all day and night and on weeknights there are also loud trains running outside the apartment. The photos also showed a child's playground which is no where near the apartment. When we complained about the misleading pictures we were advised by the owners that most people check Google Earth before booking so please take their advice and check Google Earth so you are not dissapointed when you arrive to be opposite a loud industrial shipping yard instead of a peaceful sandy beach. The three bedroom apartment is not three bedrooms. It is two bedrooms with a very small additional room which looks like some kind of office converted to a bedroom with only plantation shutters and no way to shut out noise and light from the living area and with no wardrobe storage. The lounge is very old and worn and uncomfortable, one of the lounge chairs was broken. The carpet in the living area was stained and dirty and the balcony was dirty (see photo below). There is a full kitchen but very minimal utensils and equipment to cook with and the oven needs a good clean.

These are spacious reasonably well appointed apartments with what you would expect at the price. We had a large family group and it worked well. Great views, lots of room in the garages, good beds and linen and the important stuff (sport) on the tv. It is probably time someone had a good review of the maintenance as we had several small things not working or broken in our two units. Most annoying are reclining chairs that won't recline.

We were lucky to find a place to stay on a very busy week end,but we hit the jackpot with the breakwater apartments. There were four of us so suited us.two bathrooms, good sized lounge and well appointed kitchen. Bedrooms clean bedding comfortable and lots of towels. The view was pleasant and it was quiet enough for us,enjoyed the sound of the waves when on the large balcony or relaxing on the lazy boy.We would stay here again.

We stayed here in August 2013 in one of the 3 bedroom apartments. The apartment was on three levels with a garage and laundry on the ground floor, open plan kitchen/lounge/dining + toilet on the second floor, and 3 bedrooms + ensuite and full bathroom on the third floor. The views were beautiful and overall the furnishing were in decent condition and the apartment clean. But, as many other reviewers have mentioned the noise from the port traffic was fairly constant and disruptive for the light sleepers in our group. Due to the lack of sleep, I would only recommend this place for those who are either heavy sleepers and use to traffic noise, or those who are happy to wear earplugs to bed.

Be aware when staying at these aparatments. We booked online after viewing the photo's which showed a bveautiful view of the water and the promise of nearby amenities. ie: shops and hotels. What you do not see on the webpage is the fact that Port Napier is directly across the road with trucks coming and going from approx 7.30am till approx 7pm at night. Some creative photography. Noise all day. There is also a train that runs into the port and it goes DAY & NIGHT, directly across the road. It took well over 1/2hr to walk to a hotel for a refreshing beer and do not contemplate walking to the shops unless you are a marathon walker. Upon returning the keys following our stay and complaining about the situation the staff were not interested and in fact turned their back on my wife and her friend. The units themselves are OK but their position is terrible if you want peace and quiet. There is no mention made of this when booking.

Very disappointing. This is a 2 bedroom apartment upstairs with garage below. The garage was unable to be accessed. Low standard of cleanliness and maintenance. Stairs unsuitable for an elderly guest.

Lovely place to stay but shocking customer service, not friendly at all and not willing to help out in any way, hard to deal with, we were very taken back at how rude a front of house person with no manners could be on the front desk greeting people. Wouldnt recommend if you wanted friendly customer service.
