We (my wife and I plus two grown-up children) spent three nights at The Mission B&B just before Christmas, and loved it. We arrived tired after an all-day drive from the Bay of Islands, and were immediately bowled over by the welcome we received from Robert and Wendy. The house is situated on a quiet residential street, just a short drive from the centre of Napier. The rooms are on the small side, but immaculately clean and comfortable, and there's a large guest lounge with a great home cinema and sound system. Outside there's a pretty deck overlooking the garden, and a gas BBQ which guests are welcome to use (plus a big guest fridge to keep the beers cool!).

All good then - but what really sets The Mission apart is the owners. Robert and Wendy are born hosts - warm, generous, helpful and obviously committed to making their guests' stay as enjoyable as possible.

They suggested we might like to try the restaurant at The Mission winery (just at the end of the street) for dinner on our first night - and we were so glad they did. It was one of the best meals we had during our time in New Zealand, in an idyllic setting.

Breakfast on the deck the next morning (and subsequent ones) was a feast - fresh local produce with fruit, yoghurts, smoothies, cereals, eggs cooked a different way each day, etc. etc. As other reviewers have noted, lunch is not necessary when staying at The Mission!

In the late afternoons comes 'fivesies', with complimentary wines from Robert's extensive collection and a lovely selection of antipasti nibbles. Robert's knowledge of wine is as extensive as his collection; he's a qualified wine tour guide, and the personalised tour we did with him was one of the highlights of our holiday.

We were sad to leave The Mission, and wouldn't even think of staying anywhere else if (when!) we return to Napier.

Why can't English B&Bs be like this?

Thank you for taking time to write such a comprehensive report of your recent stay with us. Twas our pleasure hosting your beautiful family. Our home is conveniently located near two of NZ 's oldest wineries, and an easy walk to the best restaurant in Napier, MISSION Estate. Open 7 days lunch and dinner, it's the country 's best winery restaurant in our opinions. Pleased our brand of hospitality hit the mark for you. As seasoned travellers ourselves, we know what's important to us and try to provide a great experience: WiFi free and fast, Wash n fold laundry service, Free parking, Guest share features include a full size fridge, microwave and bbq, a cinema lounge and huge outdoor decking area where we serve breakfast most of the summer. Fivesies, is our informal get together over a platter of local delicacies and some special regional wines. Meet hosts and in home guests al fresco weather permitting. Hawke's Bay wines are world class and the fruit / Veg are truly fresh & delicious. We feel blessed to live here and share with our guests. RS has guided tours in the wine country since 2006. Seasonal choices for our breakfasts change daily. We try to keep it healthy and interesting. The home produced fresh fruit juices have proven really popular. Currently serving peach, strawberry, melon and mixed fruit. Again our gratitude for sharing your review with T A readers. It's the biggest assist to us small family accommodation providers and we are most appreciative. Hope your travels bring you back to us soon. After arrival, the complementary "5 sees" soiree/happy hour was a delightful way to relax with our hosts.Simon and his charming wife Wendy. They proved most helpful and knowledgeable about Napier and its environs. Would recommend dinner at the excellent "Mission Restaurant" at the end of their street. Next mornings breakfast proved top line in quality and options. The Napier water ride through the estuary into the "Old Port" and downtown is a must (Simon and Wendy provide guest cycles as a courtesy). This city park ride provided a wonderful intro into Napier's earthquake and history. Recommend Mission BandB and would definitely stay here again but for more than one day next time.

Thank you for the lovely comments and taking time to share with T A readers. It's always our pleasure to accommodate you. Pleased the Rotary pathways and bike trails 'hit the mark' for you. We too love the 'water ride'. Located mere steps from NZ's best winery restaurant is indeed a plus for us, and most of our guests enjoy at least one meal there during their stay. No drink /drive issues when it's < 10 minutes walk ! with appreciation and hope to see again soon, warm regards, RS & W Mission B&B on the Avenue 140 Avenue Road (Mission end) Napier 4112 +64 6 844 3988 27 328 3788 mobile call FREE 0508 42 86 87 (HB TOUR)

Very cozy Bnb that is centrally located to the area's attractions. The house and rooms were very clean and comfortable. The owners are very friendly. They hosted a happy hour for all the guests offering great local food and wine. They were very helpful with food/activity recommendations. They even called a restaurant that they knew we were having dinner at to offer us a ride home because it had began to rain and we had walked there. The breakfast offerings were different every morning and were cooked to order. The backyard is beautiful and there is a running trail right behind the house that we frequented every morning. You are also within walking distance to Mission and Church Road Wineries or you can use bikes that the property offers guests.

This was an outstanding experience and the highlight of our supposed fishing trip to the North Island!!!! Robert and Wendy are incredible hosts and the hospitality was more than generous.
Great location for visiting vineyards, exploring the wonderful countryside and Napier itself. It is very hard to add to the previous reviews, as it has pretty much already been said!! We came away feeling we had made two new, lovely friends. Obviously, thoroughly recommended.

Beautiful B and B and the kindest, most lovely hosts. I totally underestimated the Mission B and B when I booked it. The advertising does not do it justice at all. it is a beautiful home with a large spacious lounge that the warm sun pores in to. Huge TV to watch the rugby on or simply curl up on the large sofa's and use the wireless internet or read a book. Rooms are beautifully set out. Far nicer and more personal than many hotels I have stayed at. The breakfasts were divine. Wendy and Robert were such lovely hosts. Highly ,Highly recommend as a great place to stay. Will definitely be a repeat visitor when we return to Napier.

Appreciate your kind words and thanks for the great review! It gives us great pleasure to host International visitors, especially from across the Tasman. Our position, just 250m from the gates of NZ's oldest winemakers, THE MISSION ESTATE, is indeed convenient for those attending weddings or functions there. It's an easy 5 minute walk. Since you were here, a NEW addition is the walking / biking track across the Taipo stream from us, in the domain which once were all vineyards. Thanks for coming to us, and we hope to see you the next time you are in NAPIER. cheers, RS&W

We have nothing but warm memories of our stay at the Mission B&B. Robert and Wendy were delightful and charming hosts and their B&B is beautiful and very comfortable. We were treated to a first night wine and cheese happy hour in their beautiful garden. So relaxing! That night we ate at the Mission Winery Restaurant, Robert made the reservation for us. The next morning I borrowed one of their bikes and enjoyed exploring their beautiful neighborhood. Wendy offered to do laundry for us (much needed after a week on the road). Robert is a licensed wine guide, so we booked a wine tour with him and went to four local wineries. We had a great time in Napier, and are sure much of this was due to the hospitality of our hosts. I almost forgot to mention the breakfasts, prepared by Robert, are absolutely delicious and cooked to order. You won't regret staying here!

Yes, I read all the great reviews, and yet Simon and Wendy still managed to exceed our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we felt we were in good hands. Simon is very knowledgeable about the area and about wine, and is happy to impart that knowledge. We learned a great deal from him about Hawkes Bay wine and other NZ wines. His love of wine is unmistakable, and he generously opened a great bottle of wine for us based on our tastes. "Fivesies" is really quite special, not just for the wine and food (although both were splendid), but also for the conversation and personal connection with Simon and Wendy. It is evident that they are genuinely interested in their guests and in sharing the "good things in life". We really enjoyed their company! And breakfast was delicious too! So tasty and served on the beautiful deck. If only we could have stayed longer! If we ever get back to NZ, we will definitely stay with Simon and Wendy again.

We spent 2 nights at Robert and Wendy's wonderful B & B - it is truly a home away from home. We arrived late in the afternoon, just in time for "fivesies" - a late afternoon get together for guests on the deck overlooking the garden. Robert and Wendy generously served lovely wines and delicious platter of cheeses and fruits.
The breakfasts are marvellous all made with fresh local ingredients where possible. The omelet was one of the best we have ever had and the French toast with Canadian Maple Syrup was delicious. Lunch is certainly not necessary following the more than ample breakfast!
The B & B is located a short walk from the Mission Winery and its superb restaurant and Robert is happy to make the reservations for you. It is a fabulous place to stay in Napier.

Staying with Wendy and Robert Simon is fantastic. This is a home away from home experience. Situated in a quiet area with beautiful trees and gardens and also an abundant bird life.

My grandson who is seven years old just loved Simons French toast fresh strawberries and authentic Canadian maple syrup. Now this is a must on our menu at home and I have to cook it on a regular basis for him.

Simon and Wendy are great hosts. This is an amazing place to stay. We definitely will return to this fabulous B&B in the near future.
