Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel has so much potential but was let down by a lack of maintenance. On the positive side, great location, nice view, plenty of room, comfortable bed. Our room, and I can only write about our experience, was very rundown. We had an ocean view executive studio with spa and the kitchenette cupboards had major water damage to them. The wallpaper was coming off the walls in places. The painted woodwork was a mess and there was grime/mould around the shower base. The outside of the property was also in need of a good clean and some maintenance. As this property is not very old it appears to have had a very hard life or is just not being maintained appropriately. Such a shame as it should be a lovely hotel, it has all the potential.

We recently stayed 1 night at the Nautilus on our way down to Wellington. We travelled from Whaktane via Opotiki on SH2 thru Gisborne to Napier. The road was open & although took a little longer due to roadworks we really wanted to support these areas affected by cyclone Gabrielle. We booked online directly thru the Nautilus website under a special $159 deal for a standard room with partial view. Confirmation of booking was seamless as was our check-in at reception & we were delighted to get an upgrade to a spa with ocean view room, absolutely fantastic!!! Thank you so much. Our room was immaculately cleaned & presented, they have a minibar in rooms & an independently run restaurant on the premises for sitdown or takeaway meals, we had pizza & wine in our room for dinner. Highly recommended this hotel, please support the businesses in the Napier/Hastings area, they are open for business & you can access the area, don't think avoiding the area is helping them recover, it's not, they need your support.

As per Lynne R review below. The manager is rude and not customer service orientated. Thank goodness we checked everything first giving any payment. I’ve stayed here before and never paid a holding fee of $150. So it doesn’t matter where you advertise it, you are a motel.

First of all this is the first negative review I have posted in many years of reviewing! The manager, Guru Singh, is the rudest and most aggressive accommodation manager we have ever come across. It is just a motel, despite the flash website. We felt a sense of disquiet on check in, with the atmosphere of the complex, with what appeared to be evidence of permanent guests in the units at the back. (this has, of course, been hotly denied by Mr Singh in subsequent communications.) However, we went to look at the room, navigating the substandard concrete stairs, because there is just a luggage lift!!, which would have created some access difficulties for me with impending knee replacement. (Apparently my own fault for not booking ground level! - why would I when the key selling point is balcony view??). The room looked okay but it was not the hotel experience we were wanting and, also based on our initial misgivings, we decided we did not want to stay. Unfortunately, the full amount was taken at check in, plus yes they do take an extra $150, that we were not consulted about; and only saw later. At this point Mr Singh's attitude was hugely aggressive and he said "Well you are not going to get your money back! You should have checked the cancellation clause". According to this policy, he can take one night's accommodation but he took 2. The room rate is already over priced and over valued at approx $250 a night so we have given a nice donation to the Nautilus management of $523.24! The good news is that because there was no way we would then stay at Nautilus, we found excellent alternative accommodation, which suited the wonderful Napier atmosphere and with a wonderful respectful manager.

Response from Nautilus Napier, Guest Services / Front Office at The Nautilus
Responded 29 Aug 2023
Thank you for acknowledging your decision not to stay, despite completing check in. As per the previous correspondence we vehemently deny the presence of any long term or permanent guests and are somewhat surprised as to why you thought this was the case. We do not advertise a lift. We strongly urge you to advise any mobility issues at the time of booking to ensure that a suitable room is reserved. The different room types were discussed at the time of booking but there was no mention of any impending surgery. As you stated in your email the room looked clean and adequate so there was no issue with the room, you simply opted not to stay. We did refund one night, although this has failed to be mentioned above. The pre-authorisation of $150 is clearly mentioned on our website and on the sign displayed at reception. This policy has been in place for over two years. Also receiving your emails requesting a further refund stating that you are a regular TripAdvisor reviewer has made us resolute in our decision not to be swayed by threats.
