There was a large king sized bed in one room, which also had a T.V. The two other rooms had single beds. One of the bedrooms did not have electric blankets, which was disappointing as it was a cold night. One of the teenage girls slept on the sofa bed, which when we pulled it out still had sheets on from a previous occupant. The sheets were dirty and there were pubic hairs on the sheets. Obviously we did not use them and tried to contact reception unsuccessfully. We spoke to the owner the following morning who did not seem too bothered. Overall we would not use this motel again as there were plenty of others to choose from. Cleaning standards need to improve ad fascilities offered need to be available. Nevertheless we had a good time as tha Chiefs beat the Hurricanes.
Needless to say we will not be staying at Sails again.
Upon returning to the Motel around 9.00pm, we went into our room, and noticed a very unpleasant smell in the room. We realised that as it was a very cold Hamilton evening, that once we turned the heater on, there would be little escape from this smell.
My partner tried to contact the office by telephone, but after 4 attempts, decided to walk down to reception, to see if there was another room available.
Speaking with the owner / manager person who had checked us in, this person rapidly got agitated and agressive saying that he had Indians in the room room the night before, and making very unkind, derogatory remarks about an entire race.
We explained that we would be unable to sleep in this room, and that we wanted another room. We were told rather agressively, that he did not like my race either, and if he had know what race I was over the telephone, he would not have take my reservation. He then came out from behind his counter, and tried to physically intimidate my partner. I actually thought this man was going to hit my partner.
At this point we told him that we were leaving, and I was relieved that he had not asked for my credit card details upon check in. As we walked away, he continued to shout racist and derogatory comments at us in front of other guests. This was a totally humiliating experience, which I hope no other person ever has to endure.
I like to believe that as human beings, that we have evolved as a race, and that this primative dirty little man is not representative of Hamilton Moteliers in general.
My only advice is that if you are not happy in what you are doing, that take a step towards making a change. We only have one life to live.
There is not a lot to do in Hamilton, but there is a lovely long walk by the river, idyllic and quiet. We used Hamilton as an easy stop between the Auckland airport and Rotorua, to shake out the cobwebs in our brain from a long 19 hours of travel time . If wine or food is your game, ask the manager for recommendations; he knows the area, the wines and vineyards, used to work as a chef, and can give extensive advice.
"Downstairs units are easier for older folk and check to see if the shower is over a spa bath. I had to be careful getting in."Read full review
