Do not stay here unless you plan on having a terrible night’s sleep. This hotel is a nightmare! There is a sign as you enter the room saying “no discos or parties” which is just as well because there is plenty of that going on, on the street below for you to enjoy while trying to get to sleep until 3 or 4 am.

The only good thing initially about the hotel is the location however that soon proved to be a negative with the insane amount of noise until super late (music, loud cars, people yelling and an odd humming noise in the ceiling).

The room - especially the bathroom is lower quality more like a 2-3 star hotel. I have no idea how this is considered 4 star! The toilet seat was yellowish and well used - not attached well to the toilet and slid around. The shower water pressure is weak and positioned for people who are short.

The carpet is well worn and the towels small.
There are limited parking spaces which are first come first serve. Terrible customer service. The people at the front desk are unhelpful and did not explain how to get into the hotel after hours leaving me stranded outside until they finally answered the phone and hurriedly provided a code for the door.
The lift sounds like it is about to break and was out of order at 1am.

This hotel is perfect if you don’t value sleep, quality and friendly customer service. I would prefer to eat a cheese grater than stay here again.

Ok so we booked 2 rooms for ourselves and our 20yr+ sons.
Positives: Big huge rooms,
Beds comfy and clean & Location is perfect, just down road from casino and restaurants all around!
Apparently they are in the process of renovating the whole place.
Negatives:
Needs a big makeover!
Windows are so dangerous and fully open so young children or even adults could fall out!
No pen/pad or compendium in rooms.
Mouldy tiles which could easily be cleaned with jif
Shower rose really low on wall with light flow that loses pressure & temp
TV’s way too small for room size
No one manning reception
Parking ridiculous for $20/night
Room 112:
Curtain hanging off hooks
No teaspoon and only 1 coffee
Loud fan in bathroom
Dirty around bottom of toilet
Tatty furniture, they’ve tried to repair... badly
Toilet takes forever to fill
Room 105:
Creaky door hinges
Curtain fallen completely off hooks on arrival
Single beds tatty and valances literally chucked on & backwards

There were lots of apologies but still not sure that I’d stay again unfortunately but once it’s renovated it could be amazing!! Such a pity....

This is a grand hotel that has run down. So some carpets are thick and some threadbare, same with the curtains. There are rotten window-frames that are beyond fixing. It's on a busy corner so there's noise from the street, but you can sit on the terrace and watch it all below you. The ceilings are high and everything exudes faded grandeur.
The room was well equipped with coffee, towels, iron, hairdryer, hot tub, 2 sofas and a dining table. The staff were always attentive, courteous, happy to help. Daily housekeeping was thorough and the room was always clean.
Contrary to what Google promised the hotel no longer has its own bar or restaurant, nor is there a pool or a fitness centre. But there are plenty bars and restaurants just outside. If your first view of the hotel is through the car park at the rear then you might recoil from the dilapidation. Better to approach it from the street, through the front door!

We love this hotel so much we returned 3 unexpected nights in a row this last time.
The staff make you feel comfortable along with being knowledgeable & professional.
This quirky vintage dressed Art Deco hotel will fascinate anyone with all rooms uniquely shaped and styled so each return visit is like your very first.
You must check this place out as a big change to the regular generic hotel room of late.
Satisfy your curiosity and your wallet!

We neglected to read the reviews beforehand. BIG MISTAKE.
CONS: Room was Goliath, sparsely furnished, with uncomfortable furniture and a smallish tv, outdated dull decor, shabby without the chic, had a palpable grottiness of dingy hallway carpets & cigarette odors, sticky rugs in the hotel room, uncleaned utensils, broken bathroom door handle and window levers that didn't close meant a very noisy night as cars revved and raced outside at all hours. The toilet never quite flushed fully and when the occupants in the room above used their toilet &/or shower, the noise from the automatic exhaust fan & plumbing was enough to wake us.
Although there was a parking facility, it was not available to hotel patrons. The uncontrite fellow at reception advised that parking was reserved for other purposes or paying city users NOT hotel patrons. We were advised to use the Wilson carpark some 5-10 minutes away from the hotel.
PROS: location is central city & close to restaurants.

Is definately a 'generous' 2 ☆'s, not even close to 3. Lift was not working. Stairwell to rooms were steep & dangerous if you lost your footing. Feel sorry for people climbing past the 1st floor. 3 eateries open to the 'hotel' every day & the smell of their vats wafts through the 'hotel' constantly. If you like the smell of oil fat, you'll be ok. Hotel is dated, carpet lifting and akin to a well worn old pub including the rooms. I had a king bed which was comfortable although the bed was covered using sheets and a duvet inner, it was pretty hori but thankfully clean. Towels and a pillowcase were stained so I sent them for clean ones. Room was sparsely furnished for a huge room. It really lacks attention to detail. Carpets worn, room musty, curtains & netting looked like they'd been hung up for decades. Wall switches just hanging in to the walls, no wall sockets near the bed. For a heritage building it has potential however looks like they've put in minimum effort for customers. Front desk is rarely managed. You'll be lucky to find someone manning it throughout the day. Carparking is dangerous especially coming back at night and having to walk through the back garages in the dark through to the back of the building via the laundry and past the restaurant doors. The one positive is its location in the heart of Victoria St. I won't stay again and will be advising my work, family and friends to avoid it like the plague. I've stayed at better back packers which is saying lots. Cleanliness is a low priority. Probably my worst experience from all accommodation providers I've stayed at in NZ and Australia. Really really poor.

Location is good. Right in the city. Staff are great. But that’s pretty much it. Extra charge for parking and the parking spots are very tight.
Hotel has an old musky smell. Decor looks like it hasn’t changed since the late Queen Elizabeth visited in the 1950’s.
Rooms are very spacious but the curtains are very dirty. The room we were in, windows were very dirty & curtain was dirty, dusty & torn.
Even after having a shower/bath, I would recommend bringing house slippers as it feels like your feet will feel dirty again from walking on the carpet.
Hotel is in desperate need of TLC. Such a pity cause it’s a nice historical building and would looking amazing if alot of love was invested in it.

It was pretty cheap. The bed was warm and comfortable. In the evening the room was quiet after the neighbouring restaurant closed. Their was new aircon, which could make the room very cold, but this stopped working on the 2nd night, and couldn't be fixed.

Disliked · A bit like Fawlty Towers, the formerly le Grand Hotel is far from it. However it was very cheap to stay in. They had nice new aircon, but this didn't work on the 2nd night and couldn't be fixed.
I paid extra for a car park, which was never available when I arrived back at the hotel. I had to checkout without speaking to a staff member as no-one was at the counter. I returned later for a printed receipt and when I asked for a refund for the parking fee they refused as it was too late and I should have sorted it out when I departed. I didn't pursue this as it didn't seem worth the drama.
The room was extremely noisy while the surrounding restaurants are open. This must surely be a problem in the weekend when restaurants are open later. The room sound reminded me of being in a cruising plane.

Not a good feeling after entering the lobby. Had a unusual smell. The lift felt unsafe . The corridors and stair carpets could do with a deep clean. Our door card wouldnt work and a very tired cleaner rang reception to get help which wasnt received very well. The rooms are incredibly large but definitely could do with updated furnishing for the price we paid - over $200.

Stayed here for just one night but could easily have settled into this lovely room for a week! It is an old hotel but rooms are big spacious and “Grand”. Comfortable bed, really well appointed bathroom with lovely corner spa bath, and French doors out onto large balcony. Beautiful with all the natural sunlight shining in but lighting in room was very minimal at night. Check in was friendly easy, and very accommodating for my need to park car hours before my room was ready. Location of hotel is excellent, super convenient to all Cafes, Bars & restaurant’s. Car parking is quite tight but plenty of parking spaces. I would definitely stay here again! Best location for cbd hotel in my opinion.
