$160 a night is above average so you would expect an above average experience. The room had multiple areas of replastering visible, the shower door didn't have a handle and the TV remote didn't work. Won't stay again
Who ever took the official pictures of this centrally located hotel is a very good photographer. These pictures are either constructed, photoshopped or very old. This is not true reflection of the current state of this accommodation in Hamilton City. Stay away!!! Cringeworthy. I was covered in bites. It needs repair. But broken is one thing. Unclean is another. I didn’t get the feeling that management would support any cleaning staff. Spa bath didn’t work, curtains coming off rails. Lifts broken. Back door to outside parking smelt of rotting food. Dirty carpets. Dusting seems a forgotten cleaning service. Passage ways to hotel room smelt of sewage. My recommendation - keep scrolling. There are other hotel options.
Is definately a 'generous' 2 ☆'s, not even close to 3. Lift was not working. Stairwell to rooms were steep & dangerous if you lost your footing. Feel sorry for people climbing past the 1st floor. 3 eateries open to the 'hotel' every day & the smell of their vats wafts through the 'hotel' constantly. If you like the smell of oil fat, you'll be ok. Hotel is dated, carpet lifting and akin to a well worn old pub including the rooms. I had a king bed which was comfortable although the bed was covered using sheets and a duvet inner, it was pretty hori but thankfully clean. Towels and a pillowcase were stained so I sent them for clean ones. Room was sparsely furnished for a huge room. It really lacks attention to detail. Carpets worn, room musty, curtains & netting looked like they'd been hung up for decades. Wall switches just hanging in to the walls, no wall sockets near the bed. For a heritage building it has potential however looks like they've put in minimum effort for customers. Front desk is rarely managed. You'll be lucky to find someone manning it throughout the day. Carparking is dangerous especially coming back at night and having to walk through the back garages in the dark through to the back of the building via the laundry and past the restaurant doors. The one positive is its location in the heart of Victoria St. I won't stay again and will be advising my work, family and friends to avoid it like the plague. I've stayed at better back packers which is saying lots. Cleanliness is a low priority. Probably my worst experience from all accommodation providers I've stayed at in NZ and Australia. Really really poor.…
The VR Hamilton is the old Le Grand Hotel, A vintage (like 100 years old) hotel with high ceilings and HUGE, I mean HUGE, rooms, including the bathroom, complete with a decently sized bath. Yes, she's old, but the rooms and the extremely comfortable bed are clean, with proper sheets and bedding (unlike some reviews say).. The parking area is tight, but present, and there are restaurants on the ground floor, but it's an old hotel in a small country trying to survive. :) If you want a spiffing new shiny, fancy, pristine hotel experience, it's not for you, but if you like a bit of history, it's good value for the money. And the staff are extremely helpful and kind, and go out of their way to make your stay comfortable and happy! I'd prefer all of this to pristine, cold and stiff staff who are great at saying "no".…
My overnight last night at the VR hotel rm 211 was hands down the worst accommodation experience of my life. The room was fithly with hairs all over the bathroom( which when the cleaner was asked to remedy complained he had cleaned 30 rooms while using a filthy mop to sweep the bathroom floors, cups with brown coffee still in the bottom, black mould on curtains that covered a window that would close, filthy musty carpet, heat pump did not work nor the TV remote. A drunken group of at least 4 partied in the room next door until 5am coming and going slamming doors amd smashing items, at one stage trying to force the locked door between our rooms terrifying me a solo female guest....there are NO STAFF AFTER HOURS, so calls and email's to reception were a waste of time... I was too scared to leave my room until daylight so spent a sleepless night fully clothed with a chair back under the handle of the joining door with towels at the bottom door gap to stop noise and vape odour.....DO NOT STAY HERE…
I don’t usually place negative reviews on trip advisor as I believe sometimes a poor experience is just unlucky or a one off. However it is clear that this hotel is in a rundown state and poorly managed. The window sill and wall were crumbling, a broken window had been fixed with a piece of perspex and cello tape, see photos below. The hairdryer didn’t work, the bath had no plug, there was a takeaway lid under the bed and the whole room looked shabby. On the positive side the room was large, the bed clean and comfy and desk staff polite and attentive, bringing a hairdryer and plug promptly. We would not stay here again.
You get what you pay for at this hotel, maybe less. We made a spontaneous and late booking, arrived to check in where we had to wait a few minutes for receptionist to finsh personal phone call. Asked about hotel parking to which we were told wasn't available and we needed to park on the street. Wasn't a huge concern for us as it was late and parking is free in the CBD at this time. The room itself was spacious and basic, not entirely inviting or cosy. Room did not come with any compendium, so no guides for using equipment or hotel amenities or even how to contact reception using phone. Power sockets and lighting fixtures were crooked, bed sheets had creases and untucked sheets. Room was noticeably painted two different colours, extra duvets found in wardrobe were not folded and had staining (assuming body fluids). The bathroom had strands of hair on the walls and floors and shower water temperature was forever changing from cold to extremely scalding even without adjusting dial. I liked the big glass windows with a street view however it is a major safety concern! Windows did not have any safety latches and could open wide enough for someone to go in and out of. Very concerned that there was no safety barrier should someone fall (accidentally or purposely) to the below balcony or main street. Corridors and carpets were dusty and overall decor is quite outdated. Stairwell doesn't have adequate signage. Didn't use the restaurant but thankfully street is filled with wonderful eateries. Hotel desperately needs some attention and maintenance. No one at the reception desk when we checked out. Would highly recommend finding other accomodation or paying extra for better quality.…
Stayed here for two nights with a group of colleagues. So bad it was funny. What was with the beds? Most of us found that the bottom sheet only went halfway down the bed. That’s taking cost cutting to a whole new level… Whoever installed the light switches was incredibly tall. The shower was like light summer rain but scalding hot if you weren’t careful. The parking was expensive and you had to find somewhere out on the busy street to park until you’d checked in, then had to park in a tiny awkward park which was locked until 7.30 in the morning. Too bad if you needed to get away early. I could go on. I recommend you find somewhere else.
This hotel deserve the lowest rating. They shouldn't be open especially during this pandemic. The room was obviously not cleaned and sanitised properly. Fingerprints and dust everywhere. The lock of my earring fell off on the floor, while I was searching for it I found something else. Condoms, plastic candy wrapper, torn paper and a soda can under the bed and cabinet. Also, condom inside the drawer which was apparently the housekeepers did not clean the room properly. Moreover, room was large however the TV was small and too far from the bed, room was dark because one of the light from the wall was broken. A hostel or even an Inn is far better than this hotel. This hotel should be absolutely avoided.
1) Had been overcharged on a credit card, which is currently a nightmare to have reimbursed. 2) Tried calling for an entire month to sort the above out, never an answer, and answer phone is always too full to leave a message 3) Due to the above, couldn't get a hold of even after emailing and more phone calls to try and arrange an early check-in 4) bedding was stained and dirty - see photos 5) bathroom was filthy - see photos 6) carpet was filthy with old food stuck to it - see photos 7) had cigarette fumes seeping through the vents all night - when we complained, they said they would tell management, but nothing was done about it, and then we couldn't get hold of anyone to help 8) on a cold wintery night, you need to decide what is more important: being cold and being able to sleep, or being warm and not being able to sleep due to the immense sound of the heat pump, this is on top of the loud street noise. This is an awful hotel - possibly the worst I've ever stayed at in NZ.…
