Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Horrible condition for the money we paid.
I woild never revisit. The furnishings in the "deluxe" room look like they haven't been changed or maintained in many years.

There was no heat pump like the photos and an old bar refrigerator which runs loud so you have to turn it off to sleep at night. There is no extractor fan in the dirty bathroom and light fixtures sit loose in the ceiling covered in cobwebs.

The carpet and beds are the only positive mark for this room.

I highly suggest you look at a to prior to booking here. The photos on their advertisements are completely inaccurate of this tired run down hotel operating on the cheap.

I will never revisit

Having read the Trip Advisor reviews I was expecting the worst. It was the last decently priced motel in Hamilton and there were no refurbed rooms left. BUT on the upside it was clean and very very quiet right at the back of the motel. The room itself was like stepping back to the 80’s. You could almost make a feature of it. But it is pretty tatty; fridge and wardrobe doors are pretty wonky and the toilet seat needs replacing. The hairdryer is a real novelty, so is the beside-the-bed control panel, and the enormous round spa bath also a novelty. More like a spa pool really. The shower head is wonky but the shower itself has great pressure. The room and bathroom are very spacious and the bottled water a nice touch. Check-in was good too. Overall I think $150 is too much, but it was clean and we had a laugh and a good nights sleep.

Response from Ross McLauchlan, General Manager at Alcamo Hotel - Hamilton
Responded 31 Mar 2021
Thank you for your review. We are gradually doing up the rooms and we have completed about half. The rate is determined by the market and the city had been full for ten days due to the Maadi Cup (rowing) and the Super Rugby.

Absolutely terrible. The room was dated, the bed very uncomfortable, to get to the shower you have to climb in and out of a huge spa bath which is slippery when wet, burn marks in the sink, broken bin, cigarette filters in the random hole in the bathroom furniture, stained toilet, and the room had an overpowering smell of air freshener which I guess was to cover cigarette smoke. The smell was so strong I couldn’t stand it and slept in my colleague’s room in the end. The noise from the neighbours spa bath late at night was only overshadowed by screaming children, people shouting and banging doors all night. Parking was crowded. I have travelled extensively over the years and this was hands down the worst place I have ever stayed, I can’t believe they charge $253 for one of these rooms!

Phone booking for a room with disabilty shower. The clerk wanted payment up front, instructions to the room wasn't clear. Room nice two beds, double and single, soft mattresses meant poor sleep. The tiled bathroom with disabilty shower had no seat, evidence of one being there and plastic mat. Tiles were dangerously slippery when wet, a two piece curtain didn't prevent water spraying to the vanity opposite. The vanity basin had no plug. An aside the grout in the tiled bathroom dirty. A sign in bathroom said for clean towels on the shower floor, we had to go to reception for towels, housekeeping there wasn't. Alcamo booklet says renovations underway as restaurant/bar closed, thus wasn't made clear when booking.

I have stayed at this motel years ago. They properly has dated since without being revamped. The room gave the impression of cleanness. The bed was comfy but the spa had to be filled from shower as couldn't get to come out of tap and room filled with steam, but was lovely to soak on. The morning I was to leave pulled back the covers to find blood spots on sheets and pillow, found bug jumping around on bed. I told staff they laughed and said they must have jumped through the windows. Not good enough, I won't stay there again

We enjoyed our stay. Overall feel was tired but clean. Pool was clean and well kept. Kids enjoyed their chilly dip. Clearly used for emergency accomodation but everyone was friendly. Beds exceptionally comfortable and staff friendly. Nice and quiet. We enjoyed our stay.

I liked the sound of this hotel but for a family doesn't suit no bench space, no smokes alarms anywhere in the room, tiny tv no sky, if you plan to stay don't bring your kids come with alone or with a person likely to get a better experience here thanks.

I had a quick look which was $120 a night, paid before check in. When checked in room was smelly, mouldy and linen was disgusting. I had sick child with me so I checked with manager if they have any other better room. He showed me another room which was disgusting. Corridor was stinking of cigratte smell. So we decided to leave. Manager charged us $50 for staying 10 minutes in that room. We didn't use a thing in the room. Still we got charged $50.
Very unprofessional and rude staff.
Not recommended at all. This place is complete waste of money.

This was truly a terrible experience, no restaurant, no pool open, no manners. Filthy and unsafe. Imagine that anyone could walk off the street and walk in to your unlit corridor and you are the only one there?
Seedy and dated. Yeuch, avoid at all costs.

Needed to find somewhere to stay quickly that wasn’t too expensive and was near the cbd. It quickly became apparent why this place is cheap.
I dropped my bag off early in the day before I could check in, so I didn’t have to lug it about. The person at the desk just told me to place it down beside the counter (in a place where he couldn’t see it). When we came to check in, my bag was still in the same place. There was a different person behind the counter and when I said that was my bag, his response was “I wondered who’s that was”. I’m very surprised my bag wasn’t taken during the day!
Going to the room, although it was a non-smoking, it smelt of smoke badly. The carpet in the room was rotting. The spa bath didn’t work. The bed was ok, but only 1 thin pillow to sleep on.
Only positive is that it isn’t too far from town. However there must be better places to choose that are just as close and not that much more expensive.
