This place has so much potential. The building is amazing, the setting and landscape incredible! The breakfast was great. Just a few things let it down...checking in was a weird experience. No one was arrived, it felt abandoned. Had to phone a mobile (number left on the desk) when I arrived and the person didn't say "Narrows Landing". Eventually I checked in. The rooms..curtains need to be darker and there is a big window high up that lets in heaps of light which made going to sleep hard and waking up so flipping early! As I said huge potential and set in a great landscape.

Responded 27 Sept 2016
Thanks for your feedback. We are a small family run B and B so if you are checking in late after 5pm you do have to call a number as we have a young family, most people love the windows in the room its part of our character. You fail to mention you were also upgraded for no extra charge.

Last stayed at the Narrows Landing in 2006 and immediately booked it as part of another visit to New Zealand. During a 3-week tour of NZ, stayed a total of 9 nights at The Narrows during the trip, but as three separate stays. On each stay, was offered one of their superior and roomy suites, with continental breakfast included. All reservations and restaurant staff were helpful and friendly. The food in the restaurant is excellent - the new summer menu covers most tastes. Mr Abdeen and his staff are offering excellent value for money, in a rural location but within 10 minutes of Hamilton.

We stayed at The Narrows for three nights and enjoyed a very peaceful and relaxing stay. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was fantastic, well beyond my expectations with delicious fresh fish and some really innovative dishes.
The room we stayed in was very large with a great outlook and most amenities we needed. The staff were all very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
The dining area is ambient with lovely outdoor seating. There are interesting art posters around the property and the grounds are very well maintained.
To be recommended.

We stayed early Nov 2023 for our sons wedding. The accommodation is very clean and everything there that you need. Large bathrooms and there was plenty of water and milk provided in the fridge on the first floor. The beds were large and comfortable. The venue for weddings is perfect, plenty of parking and room for large groups in the common areas. The reception room is perfect with a view from all the windows it makes a great backdrop for the photos. The grounds are very well kept and it was a delight to stay there. The staff are so attentive, hard working and so friendly and efficient. Check in was a breeze, very informative and helpful. The continental breakfast was very well catered for starting the day. Thank you everyone at The Narrows Landing, I will be highly recommending to family and friends.

We had a wonderful night at the Narrows Landing. It is a beautiful building and the rooms are architecturally very pretty.
Peaceful grounds and lovely breakfast. Great service. We'd stay here again and even considered having our wedding here if only it were closer to friends/family for us

Advertised as LUXURY at $245/nt. Stayed 2 nights. NO room service. Shower curtain, nowhere to put soap.No towel racks. Ordered entrees for lunch and after 35 mins complained. It appeared after 3 minutes. Breakfast buffet wasn't available until 9am but we were expected to be out by 10am. Look out from room was over a roof which was dirty and covered in leaves. Not acceptable when paying these prices. On arrival we had to wait between 5 to 10 mins before anyone came to reception. Only kitchen staff on hand to come to counter. The room was old and dark and when the guests walked around above us we could hear each step on the ceiling. The only good thing about this place is it is air-conditioned. Other guests were also complaining of similar issues. 2 rooms apparently had lots of mosquitoes to make it more uncomfortable. After 3 weeks traveling in NZ this was by far the most expensive and worst rooms and service. Please don't waste your money going here as there are many beautiful places in NZ to stay.

We booked in for an anticipated great night and had invited our daughter and friend to join us for dinner.
The anticipated set menus as advertised on their website but were told "they are not available tonight..........".
The food was tasty but we had to pay the full menu priced which doubled our cost. When discussing the matter with the owner per phone the next day he was totally unrepentant and did not believe that if the menu was not available he did not have to change the website to warn clients or notify guests until they were already at the restaurant.
The next morning when we arrived in the dinning room for a "continental breakfast the floor had not even been swept from the night before (real"fine dinning" as advertised on their website).
The continental breakfast comprised fruit, yogurt cereal and toast. No other pastries, cheese, croissants or even marmalade. If you wished to have a fresh leaf tea it was available at an extra $5.50.
Everything was sloppy and not as advertised. The only redeeming feature was the meal was well prepared but expensive the night before. We were testing the place for a possible conference for my company-but trust them with the most valuable asset, my staff, you must be joking

My partner and I stayed at the Narrows Landing on Christmas Night. We had stayed there a number of years ago, and had found the atmosphere, food and accommodation to be superb, so we looked forward to repeat of this experience on Christmas Day. Sadly, our stay fell far short of our expectations, and we were left to wonder what had become of the establishment that had been the source of so many happy memories. In retrospect, we read recent web reviews of The Narrows Landing and regret that we had not read these before making the booking.

We had made the booking for a 'Luxury Suite' in mid-December - feeling lucky that we managing to get a room at such late notice! Imagine our surprise, when on our arrival we found that The Narrows Landing was to all intents and purposes in 'shut down' mode. There was no sign of life. We were unable to gain access to Reception and there was not even a sign directing us where to go, just one stating that the Restaurant was closed. Calls to the landline and mobile went unanswered. After 15 minutes we had a call back from the proprietor, who seemed clearly inconvenienced by this intrusion on his Christmas day off. This is hardly the kind of “meet and greet” we have come to expect from a “Boutique Hotel” anywhere. It was obvious to us that we were the only guests that evening.

We came with the expectation of enjoying a gourmet Christmas dinner, in a festive atmosphere, The Narrows Landing website, states: “We will do our best to ensure that you feel welcome and truly satisfied. In response to changing trends we offer an extensive gourmet selection of top quality meals, within a relaxed and informal atmosphere.” Imagine our surprise when our first sighting was of the notices on the windows advising that the Restaurant was closed. Even the “welcome letter” addressed to us that we found in our room stated the restaurant hours and made no mention of the restaurant being closed at any time over the Festive Season.

When we asked what was on offer for dinner, the proprietor suggested that we go drive to Hamilton, a 34 km round trip - where we found that the only restaurant open was an Indian Restaurant – hardly our choice for Christmas dinner .

A highlight of our previous stays had been the impressive buffet breakfast on the deck. We were looking forward to this on Boxing Day. Unfortunately all that was on offer this time were some defrosted croissants. Hardly the five star service we had expected!

The accommodation was also let down – we had booked for and paid a hefty sum for a 'Luxury Suite'.. By no stretch of the imagination was our room a 'Luxury Suite'.. The room number was missing so initially we couldn't locate our room (clearly the proprietor did not see that it was his role to accompany us to the room).. The area immediately outside our room was poorly lit and the key was very difficult to get into the lock – especially in the low light. The room did not have a fridge or the most basic of facilities such as a coffee plunger. The TV did not work. Overall, the room looked worn and tired and had no view. The bathroom could best be described as ‘no frills’. The quilted cover was too heavy for the humid summer evening, but there was no alternative. We were unable to adjust the temperature on the air conditioning unit so overall, it was an uncomfortable night.

It beggars belief that the proprietor did not have the courtesy to inform us with reasonable notice that the restaurant (and hotel) were effectively closed for the holiday period and that it would be best if we sought out alternative accommodation. He was happy enough to take our money but was certainly not forthcoming with the service that one would expect when paying top dollar for premium accommodation.

We emailed these concerns to the proprietor. It took over a week for him to respond, and then only in response to a reminder email. He apologized that he was not available to answer the phone on our arrival, however, there was no acknowledgement of our other concerns. He did state that the hotel had in recent years been closed for three weeks over the Christmas period. This was not indicated on the website, and they were still accepting bookings. He declined a request for a partial refund.

In summary, the service and accommodation fell far short of what is promised on the Narrow’s landing website. The hotel is now tired, run down and the service is appalling – a far cry of what we had experienced under previous management. We were hugely let down and greatly inconvenienced by this experience.

So, if you are look for a quiet, boutique hotel in the country with excellent service, good food, a congenial bar and a happy atmosphere, then do yourself a favour, avoid the Narrows landing at all cost. Look elsewhere.

Unusual architecture but no concept of what it is like to be a hotel.

This hotel charges premium luxury hotel prices but has no idea how to provide a premium luxury service.
Coming back to the hotel at 8.45 pm was a miserable experience; lights off, door locked, had to use side door. Bar closed, no welcome, hotel in pitch dark. Another night this happened when we returned at 9.15 pm and then again on another night at 9.30 pm. We felt very unwelcome. Had to knock on the door of the duty manager's flat to get bar service (when we could find the right door).

Breakfast was strange; we wanted continental breakfast but it was orders taken and brought to the table - no buffet to browse. And all wheat-based pastries and cereals - there were no cold meats, fruits or veggies. It was a very slow affair to get breakfast so we skipped it after the first day.

There was no bar in the room, there was a very poor quality cooler that barely worked. All noises from the main concourse travelled through our room.

I suspect that the owner has never been in hospitality and runs this hotel like a hobby rather than a business. Unhappy staff completes the picture.

Would definitely not stay there again, the premium bill just does not justify the mediochre experience.

Group tried to eat at the restaurant of an evening, restaurant very quiet bar our large group. Waited TWO HOURS for food (OK we were a large group but some received food after one hour, with an hour wait for the rest of the meals to arrive), even then they were not the meals that were advertised. E.G. Most ordered a spaghetti Bolognese however after 2 hours some received penne pasta with lumps of stewed meat!?? This is without any notification from any member of staff. When we complained that we did not receive the meal advertised we were told this was because they did not have enough ingredients! Well perhaps they should have notified us when they took our order 2 hours before!

When, after over 2 hours, the group tried to cancel our deserts due to wanting and/or needing to leave we were told to "shut up" and "stop complaining". Frankly the worst service I have ever received. Shame, as the location is nice, but the staff are frankly rude and judgemental. Horrible experience, please avoid if you can!
