Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Clean bed linen , towels etc but room is very tired with broken fittings, saggy non light blocking curtains , broken blinds , door handles missing, taps that shake the place apart and some fly screens in shreds. Good washing machine , good location especially track down to Onepoto Bay. Pleasant lady in check-in/shop but over all very run down motel.

Worst restaurant experience for a long time.Arrived and ordered just after 6pm and spent nearly 2 hours watching flies inside restaurant crawling around window trying to escape. No contact from staff. Meals cold and inedible when finally delivered. No other restaurants in area other than Kai Kart at Te Araroa 8 km away that shuts at 6 pm. Beautiful area worth going to - need to self cater after 6 pm

Because of its location it gets a 3/5. If it was in a city it would be a 1/5. Saying that, our expectation was very low from the earlier reviews… but we were let down by Lottin Point Motel, so were needing a place to sleep and eat on a wet and miserable day. The service was good, we did have to wait until 7pm for a meal due to a large football group booking, which was fair enough. The room was clean, water was hot, view was pleasant and it was very quiet, so obviously not all rooms are like previous reports. It is a 1960’s motel… good for a night and so much more pleasant than the service received at our ‘booked’ one. The meal was good, we both had steak - cooked as ordered.

Do Not! stay here. We arrived for our holiday at New Year to find the worst place we have ever stayed in. A green swimming pool full of tadpoles! A playground falling apart with rust that should be knocked down . Our two bedroom unit was so old and rundown with cockroaches , ripped furniture and holes in the wall. BBQ we had intended to use was a dilapidated heap. No way we could stay there!! Only positive was that they willingly refunded our payment. Terrible experience.

This is an awful place. We booked out of desperation, knowing it would be very basic - we had been on the website. When we got there, there were tadpoles in the green pool, the furniture was old and ripped, and there were cockroaches under the beds. We left straight away. This is an awful place in a beautiful setting.

Absolutely disgusting. We took one look into the room and left forfeiting the night’s cost. Then continued on to Gisborne so driving for hours longer but it was worth it to not have to stay in that place. It smelled, the outside was filthy , the towels weren’t big enough for a child. The tv not much bigger than an IPad. All in all a terrible place. Saw some reviews and thought maybe they were harsh but no. They were kind. The owners of this motel should consider pulling it down and rebuilding.

Facilities were good, great food in the restaurant and friendly service. We were booked on a local fishing trip with Coastal Fishing Charters and the motel was perfectly suited to our needs. East Cape is first to see the sun and it was amazing how early it got light outside.

Our first time staying here, we absolutely love the location ! The beach, fishing & shops are not too far at all and the rooms are great for kids/families. Great big open grass space with a neat walk-way to the glow worm cave that is on the property. The restaurant & bar is another great highlight. Beautiful scenic views, beer & good kai ! The place is well run by the new owners !

The motel is under new management. The new owners and staff are super friendly and accommodating. The rooms are basic but comfortable and I understand the new owners plan to upgrade soon (this will be a big job so may take time). The views, serenity and hospitable staff are the real selling points for this motel. There is a nice native bush walk down to Onepoto Bay which is a pristine beach surrounded by Pohutukawa Trees. If you want to experience the true rural New Zealand life, then this is the place to stay.
