In the heart of beautiful sunny Gisborne you'll find the very welcoming Emerald Hotel & Conference Centre. It's a hotel that offers all the benefits of boutique accommodation right in the midst of the city centre, and is the Gisborne's first fully-integrated hotel and conference facility. Spacious rooms overlook stunning vistas across the inner harbour through to the historic Kaiti Hill, to the surrounding hills, across beautiful rivers and, from the executive apartments, out to Young Nick's Head. It's the perfect place to host conferences, meetings, weddings and gatherings. As a full service hotel guests don't even need to leave the hotel for anything, although it is close to other cafes, restaurants, shops and city attractions.

When first walking into the very tidy and almost shiny reception area of the Emerald Hotel I was happy that we found no need for the little bell on the reception counter, because our friendly and very well spoken receptionist was already at the counter ready to help us.

I forgot to glance at the receptionists nametag, but the impression she gave was that she had pride in her job and providing customers with an easy and friendly check in experience. She was of foreign nationality (please forgive me) and was on the check in desk at around 1:50pm on Tuesday the 11th of January, she's an asset to the business!

One of my favourite things about the stay was the complimentary parking provided by the hotel. One of my fears was having to park my vehicle outside on the road, so I was more then happy when I was guaranteed a free carpark in hotel parking building, secured with a roller door accessed by your room key! Very secure!

Myself and my travelling companion were more then happy with our room. We only paid $198 for 1 night and were very happy with our pool view, our PRIVATE balcony, our mini lounge suite and dining area and the separate bedroom with a very large bed. The very large and spacious bathroom was also very welcoming and the large mirror which ran the length of the vanity was the icing on the cake.

The hotel itself is very large and though being centrally located on the main street of Gisborne feels like your own oasis away from everything as once inside the hotel you couldn't hear the main road outside, you only had to focus on enjoying your stay!

Another highlight of my stay was having a refreshing dip in the large hotel pool on a very warm day. Though we were sharing the pool with multiple other guests, we weren't to bothered due to the large size of the pool and everyone having their own space.

Also I thought I'd note if you were planning on travelling outside the hotel for dinner, 'The River; Restaurant and Bar' is within stumbling distance (couple 100 metres) from the 24/7 entrance. So you can enjoy dinner and a few drinkies without having to worry about getting back to the hotel!

Overall very happy with my stay. Next time I stay in Gisborne I will definitely be booking the Emerald Hotel!

We need somewhere to stay for one night as we passed through town- the Emerald hotel was fine. We had a 2 bedroom suite overlooking the river, which meant it was quiet and away from the main traffic noise. The room was huge, well set up and clean, so overall very comfortable. There is secure parking which was good but a bit of a mission to get in to. As others have said (in very amazing terms) the layout of this hotel is really unusual. We are still baffled in terms of finding our way round and left none the wiser (but with improved fitness from all the walking). We found it amusing! A nice stay, thank you

We had a couple of nights at this hotel paid $170 per night wouldn't want to pay anymore than that
Clean large room. Corridors like a rabbit warren pool area good, don't understand why they put an 8 in front of the room number a bit confusing staff very good and accommodating. A big thank you to AJ at front desk.

Our first ever stay at this hotel. And will be our last. We returned to the Emerald after dinner to find a guest laying in the corridor, vomit everywhere. Couldn’t use the hotel phone as it was out of order (and this wasn’t rectified all weekend) so phoned reception from my mobile. Someone did attend but did not move the guest on or clean up the vomit. After about an hour of listening to him vomit out his intestines I asked him to move on. Turns out they were in the room next to us. The vomit was eventually cleaned up sometime before we woke. Our shower-over-bath leaked badly!! The entire tiled bathroom floor was covered in water. And I mean the whole floor. So dangerous! There also wasn’t enough fall to the drain in the centre of the room so the water just travelled down the grout lines right past it! A little investigation (and all our towels later) we worked out the leak was coming from directly underneath the bath. Let management know, not terribly interested. Returned to our room early arvo expecting housekeeping to have been and left new towels but nope. Contacted reception (again, from my mobile) and they asked if we’d had the Do Not Disturb sign out - of course not! Actually don’t know if there was one as I never saw it! We needed a heap of clean dry towels!! And milk because they only supply the ridiculously tiny 15ml uht containers. Contacted reception AGAIN and someone brought up tea, coffee, sugar but NO MILK. Another call to reception. This was starting to feel like Faulty Towers! Honestly the room was great, spacious and clean. The service was absolutely rubbish. What there was if it. Really unprofessional. There’s only so many times you can hear “sorry about that”. It became an absolute joke. Would not recommend and I’m a bit gutted about that. Was supposed to be a nice weekend away with the hubby and the accommodation makes up a huge part of the enjoyment factor. Spoke to a local who was surprised we chose to stay there and advised a couple of much nicer places for next time.

It seems such a shame to write this as the accomodation was great. Excellent room!
However customer service was terrible, young blonde restaurant girl who has attitude and sass, spoke down to costumers, had a face of thunder and was outright rude! She had this effect on not only myself but other people who we knew who were staying, reception staff weren’t much better, no positive smiles, quietly spoken and blunt. Breakfast was overpriced and our children had a bowl of very stale cereal and a yoghurt for $18.50! Happy to pay this price for adults but when we asked for a discounted price for children who barely ate they were very blunt and rude again. The blonde girl in the restaurant needs to go! She had a huge impact on many guests and was the worst hospitality representative iv ever seen.

We arrived on Friday afternoon and were greeted by a very cheerful staff member who checked us into our room quickly and efficiently. The room overlooked the river and had a lovely balcony outside where we could share a "cuppa" and relax. It was sundrenched and lovely. We did not eat in the hotel and we did not use the pool although the spa looked very inviting. The room was very spacious and it was well set out. The bed was comfy and there were a plethora of pillows available. The bathroom was also spacious and there was a separate bedroom with two other beds in it. The whole room was spotless and obviously very well looked after by the cleaning staff. We liked the fact there was ample supplies for coffee and tea. The office staff were very helpful as well. We loved our stay and we enjoyed the quiet room as well. We will stay again.

Okay. Starting with the positives the sheets were clean and the bed was pretty comfortable. Also the view of the river was lovely.
The hotel is so run down. The rooms are not clean. They supply some dishes and cutlery with liquid detergent but no cloth or tea towel. They don’t service the room - well they pulled up my bed - didn’t wash dishes or wipe anything. There was a squashed fly in the door frame of the internal door and a huge crack in the ceiling. The courtyard area was totally infested with pigeons. The pool was green and smelly. They were trying to fill the spa section with concrete??! On the third night there was heavy rain and water was pouring through a light fitting. No one answered the phone when I called reception repeatedly. Will not be back!

I was booked here on business as a solo female traveller. This hotel was disturbing in so many ways - unclean, run down, and eerily empty. When I checked in I had to walk round and round empty corridors to find my room at an end where the hallway lights were out and paint fumes were heavy as someone was working in the corridor.
The carpet was stained, the walls were damaged, there was a foul smell from the bathroom drain and the cleaners had only cleaned what they could see - the inner wall of the bath had hair stuck to it and the front lip of the toilet was filthy. The sheets were short on the bed and neither of the bed side lamps was working. There were no coat hangers in the massive wardrobe and the spare pillows were stored on the floor. The ironing board was ripped. I could go on and on, suffice to say that this hotel was the worst introduction to Gisborne I could have had, and my colleagues with their local knowledge were so embarrassed that our booking agent put me there.
Ultimately Gisborne was beautiful but don't spend any money at the Emerald!

We stayed her for one night as a part of a North Island road trip as we had understood Gisborne was great for food & wine. The hotel feels quite dated but the biggest problem was the noise from the traffic outside. If this was extraordinary or not I don’t know but there were timber trucks passing by every second minute during the night and as the road bends right outside the hotel their engine braking was quite frustrating. Make sure you get a room not facing the road. The whole city center felt quite dated and we could not find any good restaurants. It was a Monday so that probably didn’t help either. Disappointing.

The parking was terrible. Very close parks with hardly any Emerald hotel parks. Our room had no toilet paper or plates and cutlery. When we rung reception no one answered and we had to go all the way down to reception (Twice)
The room was very noisy and we had a terrible sleep due to the loud humming from the air con unit on our balcony.
Also there was no restaurant like it stated on the website and in room information booklet
I would never stay here again
