Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely not worth the cost of the stay. The public bar below means you can't sleep at all until it shuts for the night. Loud shouting as people got drunk down there. Music so loud the floor on my room vibrated. Managed one hot shower and then went Cold the whole next day. Same for others in my group. Came into use the shared kitchen as restaurant has closed down. Four cats sitting on kitchen tops. Had a yuck feeling about the whole place. Maybe with a backpack rate you could warrant staying there but is not cheap at all!

Dirty dormitory style room. Floors filthy, don't walk barefoot, even in bathroom- bring bathroom slippers. Big spiders and webs INSIDE room. Bed sheets were clean, but stained. Glasses and cups clean, everything else filthy. Felt like cheap hostel... bed too soft, terrible sleep. I was shown around when we checked in and my husband was given a block of chocolate, other than that, service was hard to find, in fact we had to return later in the day just to check in. Confused why anyone would give a better review. We were keen to check our before anyone saw that we even stayed the night. Bad experience

We.booked this hotel on our East Cape road trip and had it confirmed, two days before starting we were informed there would be know refund even for covid lockdown. We sent a text of our displeasure they canceled use with a poor excuse. We were still prepared to go there. Bad attitude and no conscience

What an adorable place. We have a roomy with balcony. The food in the hotel was amazing, staff in the kitchen were lovely. As for the bar staff and locals, wow blew our mind. Would love to go back again.

Just to update everybody .Nothing has changed at this place Should be your last resort if you cant stay at Tokamaru bay or elsewhere. There is no food at this hotel and you cant cook anywhere either and there are no other options at Te puia springs The Hotel has nothing to offer very expensive with a worn out hot spring pool Sorry to say this but for 140 nz per night better sleep in the car

This place shocked us. It is awful. Host rude and unhelpful on the verge of nasty. Lounge locked to us so no TV or comfy chairs. No food available. Room grubby with a filthy, stained undersheet. It was dreadful. Kiwi hospitality is badly let down by this place. Fellow travellers, don't stay here

Three couples travelling together, accommodation booked and confirmed with confirmation number received 5 weeks in advanced. But on arrival no accommodation available. Apparently, although I had made three phone calls to the hotel and spoken with the owner each time, the last call being on the morning of our arrival, I didn't verbally confirm the booking! Also the computer booking system which the owner insisted I use was difficult and not user friendly, the hotel frumpy and grubby, the hot springs smaller than my living room, and the owner, rude, objectionable and unhelpful. Te Puia Springs is in a remote area with limited accommodation. I highly recommend that this place is your last resort, because a resort it ain't!

We were doing a road trip ( 3 couples) around the East Cape and one of our party had booked 3 rooms at the Te Puia Springs Hotel. She rang originally and was told to book online on the Hotels website - which she did. She received a confirmation number so thought it was all done. When we arrived we were told that there was no booking. A bit of a problem (understatement!) as everyone seems to be on a road trip at the moment and there was no other accommodation to be had nearby. The guy on reception was great and rang the manager who was out and made us all a cup of tea while we waited for the manager to return who hopefully had some idea what was going on, as he handled all the bookings. When the manager arrived we showed him the confirmation we had received and he them promptly stated that we still had to ring to confirm as well after we received the confirmation. Very confusing system and not one that we have ever struck before- and we do book a LOT online. Our friend had actually rung him after booking to confirm the dinner arrangements and the problem had not been picked up then. Note- restaurant is closed so you have to drive to dinner. So the first problem is the booking system. The second problem was the response by the manager (not the receptionist -he was great). Rather than say - look I am very sorry this has happened- and try to find us some accommodation- he just got into a heated discussion. I know mistakes happen but their system is strange and he was the one who would not take the phone booking and said to use their website. We were basically stranded and had to find alternative accommodation for 3 couples - not an easy task at 4.30 in the afternoon with very limited accommodation in that area. We spent an hour on the phone and did eventually find a great place (cheaper too) which I can fully recommend below. We did have a little time to get a feel for the place and I can agree with all the previous comments left by other people below. We do intend to travel this way again as its a great trip BUT we will not be staying here. The place we did stay at was the Tokomaru Bay Post Office - Postmasters Office. I can fully recommend it for couples travelling together. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and lovely lounge and is within walking distance of the Tokomaru Bay Pub which is an added bonus.

Not being able to holiday overseas this year, we thought we’d do our bit to support the local tourism industry by doing a roadie over the Pacific Highway. On the East Coast of the North Island. The hotel at Te Puia Springs had all the old world charm we like to enjoy and seemed to have good ratings. Upon checking in, although our room had in the past been renovated, the windows, ceiling and shower was covered in mould and cob webs hanging in the corners of the room. We went to sit on the balcony and the few plastic chairs that were there were covered in dust/mould and there was possum poo dispersed over the deck. This could be such a beautiful hotel but one gets the impression that it is being totally neglected and it is more like a hostel than a hotel and certainly wasn’t worth anywhere near the $140 we paid for one night. Very disappointing overall.

Pretty tidy but it has a bit of a hostel feel. No TV in rooms, which are a bit small, does have Wi-Fi. It’s winter and cold, nothing cozy to attract you to the lounge. Online raves about the hot pool are clearly contrived. It is hot but it’s a wee little thing, bigger than a personal home spa, way smaller than a swimming pool. Bottom line, way to expensive for a hostel type accommodation.
