We booked here as our friends had dogs and we could take them. The motel is 5 minutes from Gisborne which is neither here nor there. Located across the road from the beach was great. We took 2 one bedroom units complete with kitchenettes. They had everything we needed and so much so we ended up eating in every night instead of going out and about. A great extension, whether intentional or not, was the extended roof which meant the outdoor area could be used even when there were showers. Lovely friendly hosts also.

Perfect location if you are after the beach and first sunrise of the world. Walking distance to various entry points to the famous Wainui Beach, this motel offers basic and tidy accommodation for our family of 4. We had all we need and the two-bedroom unit was clean and neat, generally speaking. For the low price we paid during the long weekend we had no complaint of this traditional Kiwi style motel. And they provide free wi-fi too! Nice considerate neighbours with pets. The unit we stayed in looked recently painted.

We chose the motel as we could take our dogs and it was close to the beach. The perfectly equipped little kitchenette was great for the four days we stayed, so much in fact we bought local produce from the Gisborne Farmers Market and enjoyed it at the motel in the evening. We loved the Wainui Store which is just a wander down the road for fish and chips and breakfast butties. The beach is on the doorstep, perfect to watch the sunrise and walk endlessly up and down enjoying the view. Our group of 4 took two rooms and had loads of space between us. The managers were very helpful. Don't be mistaken, this motel is not in the centre of Gisborne, it is a 5 min drive between noise and in a city to tranquil and next to an amazing beach!

The Wainui Beach Motel is located across the road from one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Both onsite managers are extremely helpful and make a point to make your holiday experience at the motel one to remember. The Motel is neat and tidy with rustic finishings. The rooms are spacious and can accommodate large families or a group of friends comfortably. You are greeted by one of the most gentlest dog on the plant, "Gus" who would lick you to death if he could. The area of the motel is quiet - Great for relaxing. To get into town it was a quick drive to the town centre. I will be back - Love, love, love this Motel.

I am embarrassed by my selection of this motel for a stop off between Whakatane and Napier which was based on TripAdvisor reviews. Basic accommodation would have been ok but noisy neighbours and children playing right outside our rooms, a plague of flies in the rooms and lack of decent restaurants within walking distance combined to make this the nadir of our trip so far. Yes, it's near the beach, yes the reception was helpful (though I had to pay for the night before getting the key to the rooms) but our overall rating is one out of five at best.

Response from Tanya B, Manager at Wainui Beach Motel
Responded 20 Jan 2014
We're sorry that our motel was not to your liking. Being so close to the most beautiful beach in Gisborne makes us a popular choice for families. You booked at the busiest time of the year during summer school holidays when we are always full with families and children. Also, the one night you stayed was during a week long national surfing competition, so there were possibly more children than normal. It is very clear on the websites we are affiliated with that we are 5 to 6km from Gisborne City Centre and that the closest establishment for food is the Wainui Store. People choose to stay with us because we are away from the city. Furthermore, paying upfront is common in almost all motels these days, and if you had booked through Wotif or AA they would have taken your payment at time of booking. As for the flies, we apologise, but due to the heat and humidity and time of year, it's an unfortunate side effect of nature which is unavoidable and we have fly spray in the units for this reason, as well as flyscreens on the bedroom windows. We're sorry your stay at our motel marred your experience of the Wainui Beach and Gisborne area.

The location is just perfect, a few minutes drive from Gisborne centre. Cross the road and you're on a pristine beach within about 50 meters. The sunrise was just perfect! I actually completely forgot about it, but the very friendly and welcoming owner reminded me of Gisborne being the first town in NZ to see the sunrise. I owe her big thanks for that, and also for the perfect clean motel unit, abundant supply of towels, for turning on the heaters a while before I arrived etc. but most of all for the atmosphere she creates!

We stayed one night in this quiet comfortable motel. There was free Internet, the bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. The bathroom was small, kitchenette well supplied. Only one issue, the windows didn't lock but the area seemed safe and secure. The beach was the draw for us. It was right across the street and just steps to the sand. Great Mexican Restaurant within walking distance, pizza too. Nice to be out of busy Gisborne, but just a few minutes away! We didn't use the pool, but they have one!

Motel right across from the beach so wonderfully situated. No views though. Motel is pretty basic but very comfortable and clean. Well priced and staff are pleasant. One piece of advice avoid the Mexican restaurant down the road. Fish tacos and fish and chips were frozen overcooked fish with that heavy crumb. Absolutely awful and when we complained they were not interested and basically said it was a Mexican restaurant Implying that excused terrible cooking with Ingredients that were not fresh. Tell that to the Mexicans (and to the really decent Mexican restaurants in Auckland and Wellington). They should be ashamed of themselves and we recommend that the motel remove the menu from their book in the units.

we are home now from our trip to Gisborne. Having stayed at the Wainui Beach Motel twice in a period of three and a half weeks. Tanya the manager will go out of her way to accommodate you. We stayed in unit two and three. Both of these units are spacious and have a lovely private front garden where we we able to have our dog outside when it was hot. The motels are clean comfortable and well equipped. Because they are a bit on the older side they also have loads of storage space so that if you want to you can unpack for a longer stay and not live out of your suitcase. Great I loved that. The pool is set in a secluded part of the complex and so you do not feel the rest of the world is watching you as you play in the pool and cavort around like a child. Just a short walk along the road is the local Wainui Dairy. Although I wouldn't advise you shop here for your food needs its a bit on the expensive side, I would recommend their burgers and takeaway food. The best I have eaten for a very long time. Absolutely delicious. But best of all is the beach over the road. Great swimming and body surfing. Lovely for long walks. Friendly people and your dog is welcome. We will return time and time again. Thanks again Tanya for returning our requests so promptly when we made our bookings and again when you accommodated us when we changed our bookings on our second stay.
