We were pleased with this motel even though it was not our first choice (already booked!).

The rooms are spacious and pretty modern with good ameneties. Each room has a garden area with seating. The beach is literally across the street and it is about 20 minutes to walk into town.

Not a lot of information provided when we booked in but, we managed to find stuff online or in the information folder in the rooms. One downside is that a few workers were obviously staying over and had rather noisy early starts.

A beautiful place to be when you need some time to think and heal. Thank you so very much for your hospitality. And to your little cat such a comfort. Our room had everything we needed. Clean and private and the staff were so awesome and polite. Will definatly be back for a visit again.

Kia ora Deirdre and thank you very much for sharing your experience at Accommodation Ahi Kaa here in Gisborne. We are really pleased you were able to replenish your life force, your wairua, with us. I think animals are wonderful companions, are tolerant, non judgmental and patient thereby having this great ability to heal. Without doubt I think our cleaning staff do a fantastic job so thank you for taking the time to appreciate and acknowledge their work. We look forward to seeing you again and wish you all the best. We arrived to this refurbished motel and we were impressed with its appearance. The manager was unfriendly (perhaps he had a bad day) on arrival, I paid and he didn't even ask us to fill in a form or anything.
I thought we had booked a kitchenette, so asked if a toaster in it.. he didnt seem to know... then said he will get one... we went to the room and have to say it was really lovely, clean warm etc... but was not a kitchette, we should of said something to him but didn't... In the morning I went to ask for the toaster knife and plate, my greeting from the owner was a grunt followed by the word toaster, he arrived back with a toaster then I asked for a knife and plate, he returned with a knife only... I figured the rest was too difficult for him, we have been in tourism & hospitality for a long time and own our own accommodation which is qualmarked as well, if ever I have seen the need for someone to attend a Kiwi Host seminar this is the man to go... We usually make a point of saying goodbye and thanking them for the accommodation, but we just left... and will not return..
On the plus side the room was lovely and bed was very comfortable.

We were coming from auckland airport. Main access to gisborne. Highway no.2 was closed down for two weeks due to a land slip and the management didn't notify us anything even when we were on the phone with them. This lead to us driving 5hours to a closed road and the only way to gisborne was to drive another additional 5hours around. Very disappointed. They still called us in the morning to put the credit card payment through. Them knowing we are tourist coming from Auckland it was just pure rude to not send a simple email update or tell us over the phone about the road closure.

For someone in an electric wheelchair, I found this place as being one of the best in Gisborne for the price. Large Bathroom, can manouver easily. Easy access to room and large parking space opposite the room. Getting in and out of vehicle is no problem. All this and a 5 min walk to Captain Morgan's to have the best fish rolls on the coast.

We spent several weeks in November travelling around New Zealand and stayed in many motels, all much of a muchness really. However we really remember the Ahi Kaa - for its friendly owners, for the Maori art and for the clean and spacious unit not to mention the great location near the beach.

Motel was spotlessly clean and rooms comfortably furnished and equipped. Room was a little on small side and a bit cramped but bathroom was very spacious with huge shower area. Wi fi connection was excellent. The booking confirmation said toiletries provided but all that was provided was liquid soap dispensers at hand basin and in the shower. There was poor sound proofing between rooms - we could here people talking and the TV's on either side of us.

Location is great for beach as just one block back from the lovely beach. Too far out of city to walk in but only 5 minutes run in the car.

I was not sure what to expect when I booked in at Ahi Kaa as I thought the photos were not very revealing.    I chose this hotel because the location was perfect and the reviews were fine.  It was a bit of a gamble that paid off.

When I see hotels on the Internet I tend to think that when they offer only photos limiting the view to close ups of mostly soaps, towels and flowers it normally means the rooms are crummy.  But these are not!  I met the friendly owner and explained this to him.

The rooms are all lovely ground floor suite style accommodation, with well-equipped kitchens. They have roomy lounges.  Also the rest of the facilities were quite lovely and a very short nice stroll to the beach.

We booked for 3 nights by mistake because we got the dates wrong for the wedding we were attending in Gisbourne.  The owner-operator did not let that become a problem, and we were charged only for what we used.  In return I paid an extra night for one room, so we could check out of the other two and stay in the last one during the day before heading off home.

I would stay here again, and I would recommend this hotel to others as well.

The things I want in a Motel in the price range of this establishment are, a good comfortable bed, soundproof rooms for a good nights sleep, clean and well maintained, and helpful management and staff. I usually judge a property by the cleanliness of the shower and in my travels have found many that are old and unclean. This one was new and clean.Overall this property ticked all the boxes. The rooms have been refurbished recently to a good standard. We had a garden room with a separate bedroom which gave us plenty of space for our four day stay. Location is good with the beach just over the road and a short drive into the town. Some of the garden area is still a work in progress but hopefully this will improve in the near future. I would stay here again if I return to Gisborne.
