Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Barry and Ros are fantastic hosts who made us feel very welcome. It was our wedding anniversary and they made us feel very special. This was my first time at a B&B. I'm somewhat introverted and had always been put off by the idea of having to make small talk over breakfast (before coffee, even!). Barry and Ros are perfectly suited to being B&B hosts: they were, for us, the right combination of friendly and non-intrusive, with a relaxed and open manner. If all B&B operators are like them, then I'm a convert for B&B's. As other reviewers have noted, the breakfasts are amazing. I'm sad to say that on the second day we weren't able to finish as we'd had a large dinner the night before, but Barry (the chef) didn't seem offended; breakfasts are quite large, and I think he is used

Stayed one night only out of two. It was a catalogue of extremely poor service starting when my wife asked for more hangers for clothes. The owner was extremely rude. We did not stay the second night as it was so bad, the en-suite is a caravan in the garden with very little space. The owners parting words to my wife and I were 'you are two obnoxious poms'. Fine if he thinks that but I would beware of staying at this establishment. It was fortunate our next stay was with friends in Napier in that I was able to contact them and arrange to go to their house the next day. The attitude of the owner totally ruined our stay in Gisborne

Barry and Ros are friendly welcoming hosts. The room was beautifully clean and had all the amenities I needed for my 3 night stay. The breakfasts Barry cooked were amazing and so delicious. The rate was so minimal and the accommodation and food was so fabulous. I will definitely return to stay again.

Barry and Ros makes you feel at home in their lovely house. I can't thank them enough for their hospitality. I got to use their bicycle for free which saved me the cost of hiring. On the day of my departure Barry even dropped me off at the airport as he was going to visit his mum that lives nearby. Barry's incredible breakfasts are something to remember, they set you up for the day, wow.

The couple owning the place is so nice and love their job. They take extra care of us, particularly then it comes to food. The breakfast was divine! The guy is a very talented chef. We have the impression to be part of their family. Would definitely go back again.

My stay at Surf City Logde absolutely made my visit to Gisbourne. Barry and Ros were so warm and welcoming and provided lots of local information and suggestions on activities. Barry's culinary skills have to be experienced to be believed... you won't get a better breakfast anywhere. The lodge is in easy walking distance to the main strip. All this combines to make an experience worth several times the price.

I am so happy and grateful to have found Surf City Lodge in the resplendent and historical Gisborne. To experience such warmth and welcome, quality and character, comfort and security from any 5 star accommodation anywhere on the planet, is rare. However it is uniquely and magnificently given to you here by Barry and Roz. When I arrived it was more like a homecoming than a checking in and thereafter I was part of the family. Having strict dietary requirements, the breakfast they created for me is amongst the finest I will ever eat. I'm sure this will be echoed by the beautiful Maori and Påkehå ladies Dolly, Karen and Rose who were staying there too. Before they left they sang a song for our hosts as a Maori tradition commending them for their exemplary hospitality. One

What a fantastic place to stay. I found it by chance and was lucky they were free the dates I needed to stay. Barry and Ros are wonderful hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt right at home. They genuinely care about their guests and make their home, "your" home while you're there. Best cooked breakfast I've had in a long time.

The hosts were specialists in hospitality and were outstanding in their service. We were offered an upgrade on our booking and the breakfasts were amazing. The house was refurbished in a grand style with wood walls and lead glass windows that give it a world-class status. It is also located within walking distance of downtown Gisborne and the beach, so very centrally located, while also being in a quiet neighbourhood. I would definitely recommend and we will be back next time we are in Gisborne. Our sincerest thanks!

We “accidentally” found the B&B on the internet and booked it, without expecting too much. We got very positively surprised about everything! Barry and his wife are lovely and very warm hosts with plenty of recommendations. They tried everything to make our stay as pleasant and amazing as possible. The freshly prepared breakfast was just outstanding and we couldn’t imagine a better place to stay in Gisborne.
