Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A Galaxy of Stars rating for this delightful b & b and its even more wonderful warm and gracious hosts Barry & Ros. Between pick up & drop offs, tips for things to see & do, Barry was a magician in the kitchen. Scrumptious breakfast perfect for a vegetarian 😍 & lasted all day! Was also invited for a delicious dinner one night. That potato salad. Such manaakitanga! The house is charming full of heritage, large comfortable bedrooms, had a soak in the bath, beautiful grounds & a short walk to the marina, the town centre, & unbelievable beach. I highly recommend this home away from home!

I've stayed at Surf City Lodge every time of been to Gisborne over the last six years. Barry & Roz are great hosts and Barry the chef primo. My stay this week again was the highlight of my working trip away. No hesitation at all in recommending Surf City Lodge as the place to stay in Gizzy!

Barry and Ros are fantastic hosts who made us feel very welcome. It was our wedding anniversary and they made us feel very special.
This was my first time at a B&B. I'm somewhat introverted and had always been put off by the idea of having to make small talk over breakfast (before coffee, even!). Barry and Ros are perfectly suited to being B&B hosts: they were, for us, the right combination of friendly and non-intrusive, with a relaxed and open manner. If all B&B operators are like them, then I'm a convert for B&B's.
As other reviewers have noted, the breakfasts are amazing. I'm sad to say that on the second day we weren't able to finish as we'd had a large dinner the night before, but Barry (the chef) didn't seem offended; breakfasts are quite large, and I think he is used to it.

Barry and Ros makes you feel at home in their lovely house. I can't thank them enough for their hospitality. I got to use their bicycle for free which saved me the cost of hiring. On the day of my departure Barry even dropped me off at the airport as he was going to visit his mum that lives nearby. Barry's incredible breakfasts are something to remember, they set you up for the day, wow.

My stay at Surf City Logde absolutely made my visit to Gisbourne. Barry and Ros were so warm and welcoming and provided lots of local information and suggestions on activities. Barry's culinary skills have to be experienced to be believed... you won't get a better breakfast anywhere. The lodge is in easy walking distance to the main strip. All this combines to make an experience worth several times the price.

What a fantastic place to stay. I found it by chance and was lucky they were free the dates I needed to stay. Barry and Ros are wonderful hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt right at home. They genuinely care about their guests and make their home, "your" home while you're there. Best cooked breakfast I've had in a long time.

The hosts were specialists in hospitality and were outstanding in their service. We were offered an upgrade on our booking and the breakfasts were amazing. The house was refurbished in a grand style with wood walls and lead glass windows that give it a world-class status. It is also located within walking distance of downtown Gisborne and the beach, so very centrally located, while also being in a quiet neighbourhood. I would definitely recommend and we will be back next time we are in Gisborne. Our sincerest thanks!

We “accidentally” found the B&B on the internet and booked it, without expecting too much. We got very positively surprised about everything! Barry and his wife are lovely and very warm hosts with plenty of recommendations. They tried everything to make our stay as pleasant and amazing as possible.
The freshly prepared breakfast was just outstanding and we couldn’t imagine a better place to stay in Gisborne.
