Very welcoming, friendly personnel. We were warmly greeted on arrival. Check-in was very quick and efficient. Comfortable room. It was a warm night and we were grateful for the fan. The hostel is just off the main approach road from the North so it is easy to find. It is handy to the city centre and lots of dining options if you want to take a break from cooking.

The hostel is an older building, but kept very clean. The hosts are so friendly and went out of there way with helping us. Is walking distance to the town. Really enjoyed our stay and will be sure to stay again in the future.

The gentleman that works here is friendly and you can tell he likes to look after the place as he does an exceptional job of it. Picking up stray branches in the front yard, kitchen absolutely spotless, with more than enough utensils, you can tell every path way gets swept and the bathrooms are the cleanest I've seen in a long time. Rooms are an adequate size, (shared a twin room with my friend), not excessively over decorated which was a relief and the beds were more than just decent. The tv area is small but didn't come here to watch tv. Wifi is a decent speed, and you can rent surfboards and bikes. (They also have alot of brochures, and a list of free walking/driving thjngs to do around town which is fabulous). Definitely a place worth staying at if you're passing through Gisborne.

Stayed for several nights at the YHA in Gisborne.

Hostel has ample parking, great Wifi in all parts of the property and excellent water pressure. The last one surprised me the most and I took advantage of it!

Hostel is also great location to Main Street and the beach. Very easy to get to/from and there is a Mobil station one minute away.

Overall, this is a good basic option.

The rooms can get really warm in warmer weather but a small fan is provided. Windows have no screens (common in NZ) so there can be lots of mosquitos at night if it is warm. Bathrooms are small but clean. Not modern but do the job and are fine as-is. Kitchen is small but well stocked but it is way too small during dinner hours. If weather is bad, seating inside gets really tight but in decent weather there is good outdoor seating too. Fridge space is really limited too and long-term guests dominate it so mark your spot right away.

My only real issues with the hostel were the bugs, size for seating and the street noise. On top of the noise of people leaving in the morning. Be prepared for it because it can be incredibly loud with trucks rolling by at night and early mornings. The bugs can't really be helped because NZ doesn't have screens on the windows but if bugs love you, just be ready.

But that's hostel life.

I had pre booked this hostel before leaving the UK, on doing so I received an email with instructions if I turned up early etc. I had booked a room for 1, which most hostels seem to offer now.

On checking in at 16.00pm I was given room 11. Which was a room for 1. This is found in an annexe which has three rooms, shower, toilet and sink. Everything that's needed. All I saw of the main building was the reception/TV room and kitchen.

My room was basic, towel rail, double bed and wardrobe and bedside cabinet. No complaints. It was clean and the bed sheets were fresh. I hadn't paid for the "Hilton".

I had arrived by car, there was plenty of spaces to put your wheels. Added bonus for that.

The hostel is well within walking distance of the main town centre with all the bars and food joints. And there are plenty to choose from!

Closer to the hostel is a 24 supermarket, name only and not open 24hour. So you can buy fresh and use the hostel kitchen.

Will gladly go back here in the future and enjoy the area.

Our room in the yha was one of the nicest we have stayed in for a while, spacious with comfy beds and plenty of natural light.
The staff were lovely and we sat out on the deck to watch the famous gisborne sunrise.

Had to stay in Gisborne as there was no way of getting from Whakatane to Wairoa by bus with doing so. Reviews and ratings were not encouraging for any of the backpackers in Gisborne and the YHA stood out as something reasonable. Stayed less than 12 hours and review is based on this short period.

Room strayed in was a four share in outside room with own separate toilet and shower. One of the benefits of staying in smaller rooms is the chance of not having to share with anyone else and on this occasion that is what happened. The room had two sets of metal bunk beds with proper mattresses, a sofa and a sink with kettle. YHA made the decision to upgrade all the mattresses in all their hostels throughout New Zealand. Unfortunately the nice mattress wasn’t for me and didn’t give a good night’s sleep as it was too hard and the boxes surrounding the springs dug in. The building stayed in was also close to a busy highway to East Cape, which did mean traffic noise, fortunately the frequent logging trucks only operated during the day.

The location is the not best as it is next to a relatively busy highway and the measured distance to the iSite was 1.54km. Care needed to be taken to avoid the logging trucks crossing side roads. It is quite a walk with heavy bags, although Intercity have been known to drop off near the YHA, the return journey still had to be made. It is a shorter distance to Pak n Save and fast food restaurants.

The building and interior were old, but very well cleaned and maintained. That is other than the exterior of the small outside building which had signs of peeling paint and water damage. The shower was very close to being one of the rare places with no visible mold. No dirt was seen but a tiny amount of mold was seen on the ceiling, almost perfectly clean.

The kitchen was very well equipped and cleaned. The gas is turned off at night for safety reasons, but this is not a problem with a microwave and electric stove top also available.

There was very little interaction with staff only occurring with checking in and out. Check in was very quick and efficient with the friendly and helpful staff members.

I stayed for a night here whilst stopping through on a journey and it is one of the best hostels ive stayed in. The welcoming couple, Elise and Marshal where a good start. The room was good with a double bed and shower and toilet right next to it.

The kitchen is big and had good facilities. The hostel itself was quiet when I went there. We even had drinks with the managers in the evening.

The Hostel is a 10 minutes walk into town and a trip up the hill is worth the view. The Hostel is situated off of the main road so can be noisy so bring ear plugs.

Stayed in twin bed private room - comfortable innersprung beds provided with sheets, pillows and duvets. Our room also had a couch and coffee table. Whilst this is an older house, the place is well maintained, warm and very clean. Facilities good, kitchen spacious. Staff friendly and very helpful. Thought there might be road noise at night, but hostel is set well back from road behind trees, so not an issue. Off street car parking provided. Hostel is within walking distance from town.

Gisborne, New Zealand
Hi James, Thanks for your enquiry. Unfortunately, we primarily provide tourist accommodation and not emergency family housing. We would suggest the medium-term accommodation providers in town such as Albert Lodge or Forrester House. Thanks.
