Value
A country motel set in the wilderness overlooking the Pacific Coast. A dedicated walkway to probably one of the most challenging land based fishing sites, where a descent King fish and Snapper can be landed. Exceptional views, tramping opportunities and a great place to take your bike out and capture a part of New Zealand's coast rarely seen by many. For those merely wanting to escape the hustle and speed of life this place offers just that - a great retreat.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Haven't been back for a few years but well worth another visit. The hosts were exceptional, helpful, engaging and friendly with nothing seeming too much trouble. Took my young son and he enjoyed the fishing and diving available close by. Budget rooms were very clean and in good repair. and beds very comfortable. No TV or Wifi as no Spark service, but the hosts can provide a Vodaphone phone if needed, the location means you don't need either really! Restaurant food was great and reasonably priced and available as required. Bar well stocked and TV in bar for those needing reminding of outside world. Really is a great spot and brought back many memories of earlier visits. A very well run set up, a sincere thank you! My only comment is that the floor in our unit bathroom was very noisey and might have annoyed those below, we tried to minimise out foot traffic. A bit off the beaten track but well worth the trip.

Thanks for the review. Sorry a bit slow responding yes, I have a big plan for attacking the floors in those upper units. I do need to run it past a builder, but I think we can sort it out mid winter when the traffic flow has cut back. I intend to lift the carpets, and screw the floor boards down. I suspect over the years the moisture and humidity has loosed the nails. I suspect the nails have worked their way up. I wouldn't be surprised if the nails were a bit short. Here's hoping the solution will not be that hard. Marija the Eternal Optimist

This motel is worth stopping at for a night or two on a trip around the area. The view is magic and very relaxing to just sit outside the room or on the lawn. Everything was very clean and fresh. There was even mosquito repellent plugged in to chase those nasties away 😊 We didn’t eat in the restaurant; there are very adequate basic cooking facilities.
Thank you for a lovely stay 👏👏

This is a brilliant stop when on an East Coast road trip! It has everything you need including clean spacious rooms, comfortable bed, a peaceful, scenic ocean view from your room or out on the foreground. The meals are delightful and prices are reasonable. Thank you for safely returning my car keys, Marija!

Lottin Point Motel was very helpful and worked with us through to a successful resolution for my booking. I had to cancel my six night stay as my uncle was sick with a brain tumour. Lottin Point worked with me and we came up with a successful resolution. As I had booked over the busy summer period I was happy to pay $140 for one night to cancel my six night stay. You can not expect to book a motel in a remote location ( one of the most scenic places in NZ) and expect them to cancel your booking with no charge, as they have lost potential revenue. Lottin Point has to on sell your room which they may not be able to do. Great service and I have driven to the location many times and it is gorgeous, remote and spectacular.

Stayed 2 nights and loved the location, people and down to earth hospitality
The owners were brilliant doing what was required to make your stay special. And doing this where a day's
normal activity can be a lot more difficult to achieve.
Will definitely be back.

Thank goodness this motel doesn't rely on repeat business!

The views were absolutely stunning but the owner was sooooo rude to us on arrival!

We arrived slightly early to check-in and because its so far from anywhere else, thought we'd have lunch in the restaurant (the sign said it was open) so we wandered around the front to the entrance but when my 16 year old (tall gangly not at all scary looking) son takes a step into the restaurant the woman inside tells him to "take a step back outside! What do you want?" When I said we wanted to have lunch she said "these are our winter hours and we're not open only to our guests" ... "Oh that's ok we're checking in at 2pm" i replied and the owner said (I kid you not!) "well you aren't our guests til 2pm!" ...

Thought maybe it was just the owner who was rude but the woman (the owner's daughter apparently) in the restaurant was just as rude - I overheard someone ask her if there was a kids menu and she never even made eye contact just said no (how hard it is a have a bag of chips and a bag of chicken nuggets for crying for goodness sake).

There were also 2 big alsatians wandering around amongst the guests who barked at us when we arrived.

The rooms were clean and well kept and the view was stunning but I couldn't get past how rude the owner was. Can see from other reviews I wasnt the only one.

Wouldnt recommend, but if you do stay - take your own food and cook in your room. We were charged $35 a head for a very nice but basic dinner.

We stayed here for 3 nights and we really enjoyed it. The motel is located on a lovely spot, although very remote. More than 15kms from the closest settlement. And accept for the walk of 20 minutes to Lottin Point reserve there is not much to do. So we just relaxed and enjoyed sitting on the veranda. The rooms are nicely decorated and one by one renovated. I write quite a lot reviews so I was thinking what whould really be a point of difference for me to mention and I found a topic, towel racks/hooks as this makes a difference. This is the first motel I do this. And I recommend to have some towel hooks or a heated towel rack to be added. The bathroom has one single towel rack and that is not enough to hang two towels and get them dry for the next day. The units have a kitchenette, but no full cooking facilities, but there is a frying pan so enough to prepare a basic meal. We had one meal in the restaurant and this was reasonable. We had the chicken salad. The owner is also the chef and she did it all on her own, so a lot of work as there were quite some dinners. It meant a bit of a wait, but as there is not much else to do, this was not a problem. Overall, I can recommend to stay here.

We contacted this motel 3cdays in advance of our stay. We enquired about. Their dining facilities what was around them. My written enquiry was not replied to so I phoned and got a harsh response from Maria who concluded that the accommodation was not suitable for us and recommended I cancel though booking.com who I had booked through.
I was surprised to discover she had taken the payment from my account last night.
I have taken this up with her directly and through Booking .com and she is refusing to refund. This is in my opinion extremely bad service in a post covid NZ where we are relingon kiwis to support our hospitality. My advise is find somewhere else to stay ie Gisborne and just enjoy the costal views in a drive around the cape.

Executive Summary Mr Bunker booked on the 23/9/20 through an OTA (online travel agent). He failed to undertake due diligence about the property he had booked. He then changed the booking date from the 17/10/20 to the 20/10/20. The new booking agreement stated he could not cancel for free within 7 days of the booking. He cancelled 2 days before the booking date. He failed to check the terms of his agreement with the OTA. He did not wish to forfeit the cost of the room. He claimed he was told the facility was not suitable for his party. We exercised the right to seek payment for a room that was booked and cancelled. We had advised the client that maybe our facility was not suitable for his party because he started going on about our remoteness, questioning the suitability of our dining room menu to his wife’s needs etc. The decision to cancel was left with the client. We would not agree to cancel a booking and forfeit income 2 days before the date of any booking. We do not have foot traffic and the chances of filling a vacant unit 2 days before a given date would be unlikely and not a sound financial decision on our behalf. Mr Bunker has been denied reimbursement of the booking fee and has undergone a campaign to discredit our Motel.

We stayed one night at Lottin Point Motel while we were driving the Pacific Coast Highway. We arrived in the pouring rain and the atmosphere and the view was fantastic, despite the weather! Our unit (Traveller's Unit) was freshly painted and immaculately clean with a view of the ocean. It had a comfy bed and a kitchenette with a microwave and toaster, enough to prepare basic meals. We ordered dinner in the dining room and our meals were tasty and arrived beautifully presented. The owner-operator, Marija, works incredibly hard to provide good service in an isolated area. The price was right for such a beautiful location and we would happily return if we are passing through that way again.

We stayed two nights in one of the downstairs units. Very comfortable and clean. Great hosts. Very hospitable. The location is perfect. The setting looking out to sea could not have been better. A short walk to a nearby beach is well worth the time and effort. An iconic NZ beach. Well worth eating in the restaurant. Great food with fish being of course a speciality. The only reason this is not rated as excellent is it is quite highly priced relative to other motels we have been staying in as we have been travelling around. Still, highly recommended.

Answer from Marija D
Gisborne, New Zealand
Sorry we have two dogs of our own, both pets and both good around the public. But the older male dog is an embarrassment to himself when he is with other dogs. He has no dog manners and can be a nuisance when there is a female dog around. So we class our motel as not dog friendly
