1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests....

If you like a charming, historical, old fashion little boutique hotel with a glorious past and a very good pub and restaurant, this is the right place! Not to mention the amazing and super convenient location!
The rooms, however, are very small and definitely old fashioned: but this is part of the charm.
Not recommended to people who have issues climbing the stairs (there is no lift).

Great staff, very central and good place to use as a base to explore the CBD. Rooms are on the musty side, not sure if it's the carpeted flooring or the rusting metal on the balconies but it's the only concern I've had with the place. I kept the fan turned on to get some air circulation going.

The first thing to pay attention to is that this is a tavern first, and a hotel second, so if you are expecting a proper hotel experience, you won't get it.

Location wise, it is hard to fault. A few minutes walk from the ferry and bus terminal in one direction, a few minutes to the Sky City area in another. However, I arrived at night on a weekend and it did seem to be in a popular nightlife area, so it was noisy for a few nights. However, it did quieten down during the week.

The room was basic. The bathroom was a decent size which was nice.

Cleanliness was my main problem. When I went to use the teaspoon in the room, it was disgusting, clearly hadn't been cleaned for some time by the looks of it - crusted on food. There were small blood stains on the bed sheets - not too bad, but enough that if I owned this place, I would bin them and buy fresh. Also, when I left the sign on the door asking for the room to be cleaned (mostly in the hope of a new teaspoon) I got a fresh spoon, the bin was emptied, one mug was replaced and the bed was made, but the room itself wasn't cleaned, made clear from the bathroom - hairs that had been there when I left in the morning were still there in the evening. Also the second mug in the room wasn't replaced or washed.

I also feel that for what I paid, there was a lack of facilities. No hairdryer, no second bin in the room. This second one is particularly important for the owners to note - as a female guest I may need to use the bathroom bin for certain things, I don't really want to use it for teabags as well. A bin in the main room would be useful. The room lacked anywhere to hang or store clothes - but there was a huge blank wall and built in shelf where it would be easy to fit a rail for hanging or to build some drawers for storage.

I give this hotel a good review because for what I wanted it for - a decent location that I could get to easily and get a decent nights sleep in - it was more than adequate. But I do feel that the owners could make some easy changes that could vastly improve the service they offer.

Everything they post on different sites conflict and is mostly wrong. Staff is onsite from 11am-12am max. The rooms are tiny and boiling, at least 5degrees hotter than putside temp. The staff were nice but the place is horrible. We got there around 4pm, walked up a ridiculous amount of stairs (no lift) to our room which was not made up and they gave us the wrong room. We finally got them to change us to a different room and it still didn't get better. There is major construction opposite so there was no peace during the day. The smoke from the pub goes straight up and directly into your bedroom. The WiFi is intermittent at best. Horrible place to stay.

Response from ShakespeareNZ, Manager at The Shakespeare Hotel
Responded 26 Feb 2020
Dear valued guest. Thank you for staying with us. We take guest feedback very seriously and noted the concerns. We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to the road works during your visit, the good news is now the area is looking immaculate with a new road, new large pedestrian and pavements in front of our hotel. Unfortunately, being it a classified heritage building built in 1898, there is no elevator. The beautiful stairs leading to the restaurant and the rooms have been a great attraction over the decades. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel and changing your experience. Wishing you a Happy New Year. Warm regards, The Shakespeare Team

We were in room 4. As we let ourselves in we were subjected to water dropping on our heads from a leak in the ceiling which bt the look of it had been there a while. The room smelt strongly of damp so we opened the windows and kept the bathroom extractor fan on throughout our stay. The shower head was broken and just hung down and the shower tray flooded if you spent more than a few minutes in there. Tried to report the issues but the female I spoke to said she only worked in the restaurant and I needed to speak to the manager behind the bar. As the bar had a queue 10 deep I didn’t bother!
The carpets were really old and marked. If there were any other hotels in Auckland available I would have left straight away

Buyer be ware. The Shakespeare Lounge attracted us because it's the "oldest in NZ" and a large sign on the outside saying $5 beers. Well the bartender said "surprise it's only for lunch". The food was average with huge prices like $29.50 for a chicken burger and $28 fish& chips. Oh let's not forget 2% charge to use a credit card.

The linen was clean, but not cleaned.

The toilet was covered with feces and hair.

The electric kettle and dishes had not been washed.

The carpet was also dusty and dusty.

The ventilation fan was also clogged with dust.

Both the stove and the remote control were dusty.

The inside of the chest of drawers was also full of dust and hair.

When I asked him when he would clean it, he replied that he would do it tomorrow, but he never cleaned it during his three-day stay.

Of course, there is no change of towels.

The front desk is not open 24 hours, so it is inconvenient to go home early at night.

The room is small.

Avoid it!!!

Waited 40 minutes for insipid food manager has no customer service skills. When I complained about how long it was taking she said well it takes that long to cook…

It’s pub grub and magically after I complained my food and the 3 tables next to us turns up…

Beer was fine if you want to eat I’d suggest anywhere else

Paid $150 for a room that is falling apart. Cello tape sticks the walls together. Honestly laughing or I’d cry.
The room is tiny and smells like pee.
Very loud outside noises.
The bar closed early so we were unable to order dinner.
Would never return and would not recommend.

Befire returning home, I stayed in the Shakespeare for little under a week. After hopping from hostels and travel tours for the last month it was a complete relief to have my own room! As well as having the space and comfort I was needing, the room was comfortable. Temperature was fine and I didn’t need the air con on the whole time. The service was wonderful and the staff where fantastic. The food and ale was great and overall I greatly enjoyed my stay! I can not recommend them enough! There was little bit of construction noise but only a little and I would of of expected any different for being in the centre of a city with so much going on!!! Overall 5 stars for me!

I parked a car overnight in a nearby multi storey carpark. I had read bad reports of the Wilson group of car parks (in addition to locals warning me off!) so I used the one that you access through a hotel (struggling to remember name right now!) also in Albert Street... Not sure it would take a campervan. Charges for cars overnight reasonable ... as long as you collect car early next morning! Street parking charges were expensive by comparison...
