Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here for 5 nights as part of my pre-tour accommodation. This hotel has lived up to its reputation. It offers good value for money. With its central location with a stone’s throw to the hustle and bustle of CBD it is a no-frills refuge for those who can’t afford or don’t want to spend big on a bed. Amenities are good. Kitchen is spacious. Only drawbacks are small rooms and lack of paper towel and hand wash in the kitchen. Bowls and cutlery are limited but I guess with this kind of money you pay you shouldn’t get too fussed. You get what you pay for after all. Staff are friendly. I checked out with no adverse reactions.

I'm a budget traveler for the past years but I am now in my 30s and need my own privacy and bathroom. With that said, this hotel was perfect for my 5 night stay. It was clean, it was near Queen and K Road, it's safe, the employees were nice and courteous. Truly, I loved my stay here. Maybe the bed and the sheets could have been softer but that's just from a point of privilege. For the price, this was above and beyond.
One more thing, the water pressure was phenomenal. So strong that it felt like a nice massage on the neck.
Notes: There's a convenience store across the street that was open until late night. Also, 15-20 minute walk to the major sites like Sky Tower, Albert Park, Auckland War Museum. Washing machines and dryers are also cheap and plentiful.

Worked brilliantly as a base to regroup after thirty hours of travel and before joining my NZ tour. Rooms were basic but very clean and had everything you could need. Bed was comfy enough, showers hot and good sound proofing which was welcome given the jet lag. Location was also good for exploring the city and it’s an easy fifteen minute walk to Ponsonby for decent food in the hipster part of town.

Couldn’t arrange early check in but they stored my bags for the day and did manage to sneak me a room an hour ahead of normal check in time. Staff were pleasant. Good value overall.

Would not stay here again for what we paid. $193 per night is way too high for what you get. My partner & I had a double room with ensuite on the ground floor. The rooms are very warm as there’s no air con. It was very noisy during the night even with the windows closed. Our room was very poky & very rundown & in desperate need of a makeover. The one chair provided in our room was stained & not inviting to sit on. Only amenities provided were 2 cups, 2 teaspoons & a couple of tea & coffee sachets - you have to supply your own milk! The only thing provided in the bathroom is hand soap so had to buy our own bodywash too. We expected a lot more for the nightly rate we paid.

Place is loud through the night from both the street and others in their rooms. Internet only lasts a couple hours which is terrible considering I stayed 3 nights. Only Cutlery they supply in rooms is a teaspoon. you have to drink room temp water from the bathroom and it's near impossible to fill the kettle from the bathroom sink

This is a great budget hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but nothing remarkable. We had a queen bed which was quite comfortable.

You get the exact amount of amenities you need: a private bathroom (with shower and hair dryer), a bed with clean linens, one barstool, a fridge, and an electric tea kettle.

The location was decent. Not many restaurants immediately nearby. Need to walk at least 15 mins to get good breakfast. It’s only 25 minutes to the pier which makes it a great base for exploration.

I would stay here again.

I’m giving it four stars because it is an all-around average place and the front desk staff weren’t very enthusiastic. Good location, good rooms.

If you are looking for a cheap night in Auckland this place is so much better than its cost would indicate. Super friendly and helpful staff. The room was comfortable, more spacious than I expected, clean and the ceiling fan was a most welcome bonus. Highly recommend.

It's a decent budget accommodation close to Auckland CBD. Was able to check in early by a few hours which was great after a overnight flight. Rooms were clean as was the bathroom. Wasn't sure if breakfast was included as when asked said not tomorrow.

Excellent money for value- very clean queen suite, efficient check-in, friendly helpful staff. 15-20 minutes walk to CBD & 20 minutes walk opposite direction to Newmarket. A nice surprise in a city with expensive hotels. Would stay again!

Our stay at the City Lodge was not that great - the room was modern and clean but very small and it was noisy because of the lack of soundproofing from the windows.

The main problems we had were with the communal kitchen area in the basement. We had booked a room for a few nights early 2007 and chosen the City Lodge because it had a kitchen and guest laundry. There seemed to be a lot of long stay residents in the hotel and there just wasn't room to use the facilities. The kitchen had hardly any equipment and wasn't very clean!

We ended up eating out on most occasions which defeated the object of staying in a budget hotel.

As much as I remember is the airport shuttle more expansive than a taxi. You also can send an eMail with this question to the stuff of City Lodge. They are well organized and will know the actual prices for the airport shuttle and taxi. If you choose the airport shuttle you can try to book it in advance via their website.
