Sleep able but not great. Water logged furniture. Cutlery in draw seemed sticky, shower was warm not hot. Heaters plugged in the rooms but didn't work. Elevator smelt like cigi smoke, walls where dirty andNo parking so be careful you have to pay Auckland city parking fees

Location on Symonds St is great, particularly if visiting Auckland or AUT Universities. You do have to climb down 2 steep flights of stairs to reception, so I am glad I travelled light. Room was clean with basic amenities (towel, soap etc) provided. Reasonably quite. Kitchenette was miniscule, more suited for warming takeaways rather than cooking.

I don't often like leaving negative reviews but I feel like we were a bit misled with Princeton Apartments.

We booked through booking.com, where it simply states that this is budget accommodation. We've been travelling for a long time and have stayed in all manner of accommodation so aren't often too fussy. However, being described as budget accommodation we assumed that maybe it would be people in a similar situation to us. Princeton isn't to blame for this since that was just our thoughts. It is a strange mix of travellers and, for the most part, international students.

As a few other reviews have mentioned, finding the entrance can be surprisingly difficult. It's down a fairly steep staircase so I'm not sure what you're meant to do if you couldn't manage it?

The staff are nice enough. I don't want to say much about them since they are simply keeping to the low standards put in place by management.

The lift to all apartments is pretty old but seems to work fine. Wouldn't recommend it if you get a bit claustrophobic though. The little hallway our apartment was on stank of urine the entirety of our stay and people often piled their bin bags outside their doors, near the emergency exit door.

The apartments are smaller than they look online, although this wouldn't be a problem if they were clean.
Our room wasn't a bad size. By the sounds of things it was one of the larger ones available. The bed was, as people have described, very much down to the springs so fairly uncomfortable.
The kitchenette is tiny. In all honesty you can't cook in it. If you fancy some noodles you're probably sweet but there's no washing up liquid or anything and only 2, incomplete, sets of utensils for an apartment that houses four.
All of that is bearable but it was the bathroom that was the real kicker for us. It was filthy, damp and smelt the whole time we were there.
There were two people in the other room when we got there who had already made quite a mess and taken up the tiny amount of space behind the bathroom mirror. They were also fairly noisy and up from around 6:30am every morning. The bathroom/bedroom wall is basically a thin sheet of plaster so we could hear every part of their morning routine in detail.
Again, not really Princeton's fault but God only knows when they clean these apartments because we only saw them once, on our last morning, when they took the bin from by the door. That was all they did.

Our room was a few floors up which put it at street level after going down the stairs to reception. One thing i will give them is that their windows were quite good as ours blocked out a lot of the street noise. Although, we did have a very bright sign just outside our window that was on 24/7.

Maybe I felt worse about our experience here due to our unfortunate roommate pairing, but either way this place leaves too much to be desired.
There are much better options around the Auckland area for a little more money.
If you really want budget that's about a 10 minute walk from the town centre then take the chance, you may get lucky with your apartment but, honestly, I'd recommend somewhere like Ponsonby Backpackers for a much cleaner, and more comfortable stay.

This is a great budget hotel near the city center. It is across the street from the University of Auckland, with a bus stop at the doorstep.

It is an odd place, in some respects: There are seemingly three categories of lodging within the two high-rise buildings. 1) Budget hotel rooms, 2) youth hostel rooms, some doubles, some shared, and 3) long-term student residences. (When we checked in two Univ. of Auckland students were checking in... for five months.) The lobby is stylish but functional, without couches, etc. There are two short-order Asian restaurants in the building. Front desk is not staffed 24 hours.

The room we stayed in was technically a two-bedroom apartment -- one double, one single -- with a bath and fully equipped kitchenette. One bedroom had its own desk. Furniture is Ikea-esque, with everything in white. The room was serviced daily, with fresh towels, sheets, etc. Ours was a "hotel" unit, so hostel and student units may be stocked and treated differently. There was one television in the double bedroom and a phone with free local calls in both bedrooms. Shampoo and soap were provided. No central heat, but space heater and towel warmer. The kitchen featured instant coffee, tea, and milk, as was typical of NZ motels. We paid NZ$79 including tax per night, booked over the phone.

The rooms were very nice and quiet. With only 4 units per floor, and a tiny hallway out of the elevator, there was not much opportunity to hear people walking around outside the room. Doors slammed a bit, but with only 3 other units, this wasn't an issue. Elevator is secure -- it requires you to wave the key card past a sensor in order to activate the up buttons.

Parking is available, but not all the time. The church next door uses the parking lot on weekends, so be sure to inquire as to the duration of your parking privileges. Parking costs NZ$10 per day -- calendar day or overnight, I don't recall. Best to clarify this with the front desk. Street parking is possible (metered), but difficult.

Overall, this was an excellent budget option in Auckland.

This place is a doss house for the less fortunate in society and those looking to prey on them. Despite having lived and traveled extensively in some of the world's poorest countries I have never stayed somewhere as unsafe or filthy. Do not stay here!

Stayed here for a week while in Auckland for a conference.

I was initially given a room on the the first building. Upon entering, the room was not even cleaned, as if the previous guest just left and they gave me that room to occupy. So I complained about it and they gave me another room from the second building which was okay. The room that they gave me had 2 beds in a very tiny room. For a single occupancy, the other bed just took over most of the space. The room was not very clean either, underneath the beds, you can definitely tell that they are dusty. Moreover, it looks as if the two beds were from one double decker bed that they just put one of the bed down to look as if there's two bed. Mattress was very hard and the bed frames squeaky everytime you lie on them. Toilets and shower are both in the same space divided by a massive curtain. The shower doesn't have any windows or ventilation so its very claustrophobic when you're in. Also the basin is so small you barely can do anything.

With the price I paid around ~40$ per night, I was just after a room to bunk and have my own private place, hence I did not bother much of all of the complaints as mentioned above. However, what I got pissed is that upon arriving one night back to my room, my things got stolen, including my passport and camera to name a few. Since the reception closes around 10pm, I could not complain about what had happened and I had to leave Auckland the morning after the incident happened. I had suspected that it could've been an done by an insider or the other person staying in the other room. I called them the next day to complain about the incident and were not cooperative or supportive. This is when I realized the importance of 24/7 reception desk and proper security. Overall, was not a pleasant stay and would not stay here again and I hope readers would not even consider this place to stay whilst in Auckland for it would just ruin your trip. If you are still considering, always be cautious then even elsewhere in the city. The place does not seem to be as safe as one would think.

I stayed here with 5 of my friends when we went to the Katy Perry concert and was very disappointed!

To start with awful stairs to go down just to get to reception and with 6 girls all with heavy suitcases no one offered to help.

We stayed here as they said they were fully furbished which being there for a week we didn't want to eat out every night.

Our rooms were clean but very very small, with uncomfortable beds and no where in the bathroom to put our things.
The "kitchen" was tiny, one bench with a tiny fridge that didn't even work and a wonky microwave. I looked through the cupboards to only find 2 plates, 1 set of cutlery (not enough for 6 people) and no toaster. When I enquired at reception about toasters they said they didn't have any, no apology or anything. I asked for more cutlery and a pack was handed to me which looked from the outside pretty good until I actually opened it up to find only 1 set of cutlery and 1 plate.

The kitchen was so small only one person could cook (which was fine with our group cause I was the only one cooking) but the stove wasn't big enough to fit a pan and a pot which ended up being very dangerous! We were given no tea towels, cloths or any kind of detergent and when we asked for some a tiny little cloth was handed over so we ended up drying with one of our towels.

With no bath mat in the bathroom we had to put one of our towels down which got drenched. In the whole week our room didn't get serviced once. On our second to last day a man came knocking early in the morning and vacuumed a tiny square then moved on.

There was no TV in the rooms which we weren't massively fussed about as I had my laptop but it still would have been nice to actually have a TV.

I stayed at plenty hostels while travelling around NZ, but this is by far the WORST!

The building is basically a cheap accommodation building for students in Auckland, and when there are empty rooms, it would be rented out to travellers (thus "backpackers hostel").

PROS:
- It's located in the city, but maybe about 5 mins downhill walk away from the main road - Queen St. Also, there's a convenience store just across the street. Plenty of food and shopping options.
- Easy to take public transport from here.

CONS:
- Tiny, disgusting rooms. Don't get me wrong, I've been to hotels in Japan that are about the same size, but at least the rooms were CLEAN and livable.
- Cheapest beds/bedlinen I've ever encountered. They creaked badly everytime I moved, and the pillows were paper thin.
- The toilet.. oh where do I start? There was already another occupant in the adjoining room in my apartment.. so it was filled with her bathroom supplies.. and also her hair. EVERYWHERE. The floor was always grubby and wet. There was no hot water, and the shower would just tinkle miserably. So, I went for 2 nights without a shower.
- There was a funny smell in the corridor always. I didn't know what it was...
- Unfriendly staff.

Overall, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. And I'm not usually a very picky person when I travel.
To backpackers: there are plenty other hostels in Auckland that are cleaner and cheaper!

This place is disgusting and was the worst introduction to New Zealand we could have had. The "double" room was TINY with 2 singles pushed together with a gap in the middle. The kitchenette was foul with mess/dirt everywhere and with one mug between 4 people. We ate out all the time even though we booked specifically so we could cook for ourselves. The bathroom was moudly and horrible. The bathroom lock didn't work which was awful because I am female and had to share it with 2 random male students.

The guy we complained to was useless and rude. He didn't even take out his ipod headphones when we complained to him and was so arrogant.

We left 3 days early and our complaint email has been ignored. It depresses me that places like this are making money. We are young, easy going backpackers and we have been staying in all sorts of places but this place is unacceptable. You have been warned!
