The rooms we were able to see were dirty, small, and not at all like the pictures on the booking sites. The walls, doors, and windows are not at all sound proofed and we were continuously woken up by noises outside or by guests returning to their rooms at all hours of the night. Our particular room was barely surface clean. There was a tear in the carpet and one of the chairs was covered in all manner of stains. I am amazed that the hotel would leave a chair in that condition in the room.
The bathroom was okay but there was fan constantly blowing cold air into the room directly over the shower. While showering you would be absolutely freezing if you were not directly under the water. There was not way to turn this fan/vent off.
The room we booked came with a continental breakfast. The breakfast was actually served in a separate hotel next door. When visiting the breakfast we were informed that it only applied to the cold items and it was suggest that we could purchase the upgraded hot breakfast. The hotel has very limited parking and they did not have any availability when we checked in so we needed to use alternative offsite parking. The location is acceptable and the staff was friendly but those are the only really positive things that can be said about our stay.
If you are considering a hotel in this area I would suggest the Mercure across the street which is likely to result in a better experience for roughly the same price.

This establishment is fairly close to the city centre and the walk down the hill is easy but coming back is a real challenge. We had a room on the 7th floor which was small but clean (thankfully because the bathroom in the foyer left much to be desired in the cleanliness department) but sleeping was an issue as the window treatments went no way to darkening the room. There were no instructions as to how to operate the air con and although I attempted to contact the night manager for assistance there was no reply so the only option was to open the windows which meant no keeping out the noise of the city. Being an international visitor the fact that there was no safe in the room was also an issue. Our booking advice stated that check in time was 1400 but on arrival from the cruise ship at 1000 we were told “no it’s been changed to 1500 - ok we decided to leave our cases and go exploring but we’re not impressed to be told “we don’t lock the storage room” so we spent 15 minutes tying our bags together and joining locks so we could feel somewhat settled about leaving our belongings. The breakfast ($20 extra) was average and doesn’t quite measure up to the photos.
The staff member on duty when we arrived was surly and not willing to help (we tried to enquire as to the attractions nearby and transport to the airport) but the staff on duty subsequently were friendly and helpful.

Nice friendly team, but housekeeping of my room was lacking. I was there for more than a week and whilst my bed was made each day and clean towels left behind, there wasn’t any cleaning of the facilities or the floor.
Breakfast was ok too - not bad value for $20, but the team needs to check that there is sufficient hot food available and that the tables are clean and ready for the next visitor. I couldn’t find a clean table on Good Friday and then when I moved some stuff around to make room for mine, the salt and pepper shakers were both empty. Maybe I’m being too petty?

Ascotia off Queens is probably the best deal you can find for good quality hotel rooms in Auckland. For a lower price point than a room in a CBD hostel, you can have a clean, comfortable, and private hotel room that is within walking distance to all the amenities of CBD and K Road. No complaints, would totally come back.

Stayed for 3 nights while travelling around Auckland. The hotel was fantastic! Just right for the price. The room was very clean, comfortable bed, clean towels and sheets. To mention, receptionists are so friendly and amazing! They did not just met my expectations but actually exceeded it. The continental breakfast is reasonable for the price, you got options and the restaurant staff is very jolly and helpful. A must stay if you want to travel around Auckland City, location was so perfect.

I recently stayed here for 3 nights. On the second morning, I noticed mould growing in the bathroom. I alerted hotel staff about this and asked them to call me with the plan of action, stating I would like a room change. When I returned, the person at the front desk had no idea of the situation.
I returned to my room to find my bed had been made and some cleaning chemicals had been left, but the mould had not been touched. I returned to the front counter and was told to speak to the manager in the morning when I checked out.
When I checked out I was informed the manager didn’t work weekends. I have repeatedly tried to get in touch with the manager to sort this out and they refuse to return my calls.
There was also another person complaining about water leaks, I highly recommend not staying here for your own health and safety if you can avoid it. These people have no interest in maintaining a healthy space for guests.

I stayed in a queen room and it was lucky that I was on my own as the bed was more like a double than a queen size, a bit lumpy and bumpy too, nice comfy pillows though. .
My room was clean with minimal street noise at night, and there was a good shower. The housekeeping service seemed to run late and, on one occasion, the room wasn't serviced until after 5.30pm, just as I needed to be there after work
I had to go out and kill time while I waited for it to be completed. Twice I didn't get enough towels and had to chase that up.
There were no tissues or milk for hot drinks, the fridge leaked and the only place to hang clothes on hangers was inside the cabinet where the kettle boiled. Perhaps this was designed to get the creases out of your clothes cos there was no iron or ironing board.
The staff were friendly and as helpful as they could be, always seeming to be busy sorting out problems.
The decor of the room was tired, holes in the carpet and worn paint on the windowsill and the TV didn't seem to work. Outside on the street is lite up all night by flood lights making it brighter than during daylight hours which makes the room very light even through the curtains. On the plus side, the windows open so there is fresh air instead of air con if you prefer.
I was told that tissues, etc, were only provided in the expensive rooms so maybe that's where it's better to stay, although I wouldn't say the cost of the room was cheap at all. I won't be returning to test out that theory, I'm done with Ascotia Off Queen , never again!

This hotel is awful, there is a pathetic excuse of a senior staff member by the name of Ethel who is sarcastic and rude.
There is a car park at the back of the building and there is a puny entrance to get into it .My car can JUST fit through the entrance, we went through and my wing mirror was broken off, we brought the issue up with the hotel and they were unapologetic and claimed that trucks went through that entrance which I personally believe is bogus.
When we left it was a struggle and a half to back out of that entrance gap but we did it.
Do not stay here, the staff do not take accountability for anything and it feels like they don’t want to be there to be honest.

Dear Valued Guest (Daniel F), Thank you for your feedback which help us to better as a property. We apologize that you felt that one of the staff was sarcastic. As seen on other reviews, we take pride in our friendly and efficient staff which other guests commend. We will definitely look into this and talk to the staff concerned as this is very important to us. For the parking, we do have limited parking in the hotel and it is best to be booked in advance. We are sorry to hear that you had a struggle in going to the parking area. Though the spaces are designed to fit a bigger vehicle, wherein most vans and UTEs fit, we understand if you had a struggle and we can of course assist in leading you to the front parking and try our best to make it available. If you consider staying with us again, may we suggest that you contact us directly and we will try our best to reserve the parking that will be more convenient for you.

The hotel was nicely located just a few steps from the popular Queen Street and not far from Aotea Center, city hall, civic center. Decent budget restaurants were less than 100 meters away. Interestingly I did not find a grocery store nearby
The room was clean and decently sized. The bed was comfortable and surprised to see the lamp next to the bed has outlets for USB charging
Given the hexagonal shape of the hotel room configuration was interesting. Most hotels have one straight hallway from the elevators but here there were many angles and almost a maze. In a sense it provided guests with more privacy
Although breakfast was not free (NZ$20) it was very generous and a great value. In-house restaurant though was already closed
While most hotels have reasonable check in/check out times I find this hotel to be on the extreme side. Check-in was a late 3:00 pm and check out was a very early 10:00 am. Any extension came with a price. I think the 5-hour gap was too restrictive in favor of the hotel.
The room has no aircon and since I like a cold room even in winter they have to give me an electric fan

My gf and I booked this hotel through Air bnb on 24/12 afternoon.
When I was trying to check in Indian receptionist said the booking got lost and he could not find it.
I showed him my Air bnb booking through my phone and told him I paid for it and my booking was confirmed, however he told me that he still cannot find my booking. After a waiting he gave me a room but told me to provide my credit card for the excess fee. If I booked a hotel providing credit card is a normal process but as I booked it via Air bnb I asked him why I need to provide my credit card to him.
He said that it’s to be safe, which was unpleasant.
After check in it was disappointing to see that he gave me the room which I didn’t book for so had to make a complaint about it, after the complaint he changed the room but still wasn’t the room I originally booked for.
The room we were staying was very loud so I asked for a another room but the receptionist said that all the walls are thin in the hotel so he cannot help it.
As i have been working in hospitality industry for a long time it was truly disappointing to see the staff’s pathetic reaction, he should have addressed the issue more professionally.
despite of missing booking and all the inconvenience my gf and i experienced he seems like he did not care at all.
If you want to experience pathetic hospitality service this place will be the best.
Worst staff and hotel i ever encountered in the world truly disappointing, staff should be trained more professionally and properly.
Rather stay in the backpacker
