It is what it says on the label - and there's nothing wrong with that! This is low budget accommodation for those who really are sick of backpackers and just need a night or two in Auckland without breaking the bank. Yes, the whole place looks like it was trapped in the 60's, the floor is uneven, and the bathroom is spartan, but that's all you need when you're only up for a concert, etc. The service from the staff is good, there is breakfast available and quick check in and out. Don't knock it until you try it!

The Auckland Econo Lodge City Central is well located and within walking distance of most everything in the central business district. The hotel is clean, the bed was comfortable, and while the bathroom was small, it also was clean. The front desk personnel were helpful and friendly with advice on local restaurants and sights to visit. We would recommend the Econo Lodge City Central when staying in Auckland.

The hotel is a bit tired, but it is clean & well situated. All the stay were super friendly & helpful.
The room was large, but the window was a bit small, hence the room was a bit dark.
Lounge area downstairs was pleasant & comfortable.

This hotel is centrally located.
Literally just outside the hotel is the shuttle bus stop from/to the airport!
The room/hotel is basic. But it has everything you would need - iron, ironing board, fridge, tv, iron, coffee/tea machine etc.

I’m not really one for writing reviews but this place is actually terrible. Dust covered the entire tiny room including our bedsheets - I don’t think they had been changed in maybe months.

Windows were also broken. Just a really
rundown place, find a backpackers for a fraction of the price and save yourself some misery.

We were booked to stay in March 2020 but the country went into Covid lockdown. Wouldn't give us refund but said they would hold our booking open for 12 months.
We have been trying to make a booking over last month but now are not able to contact the hotel. This part of Choice group is not a great look. Where is our money - why can't we get in touch with the hotel?

We stayed at the City Central for 3 nights and were unbelievable disappointed with the rooms, the service and the managment. although we had book many weeks in advance into a non smoking room ( i suffer asthma) we found ourselves in themiddle of one of the smoking floors, the room stank, the bed sheets and towels had not been changed even though we checked in after 5pm. it took over an hour for the hotel to check us in as it had lost our booking, despite it being confirmed under a week before we arrived, and when we went to check out i dicovered that they had charged an extra 2 night to my credit card which they refused to remove until i threatened to call the police. do not stay here they are crooks.

Dear Ms Morrison, We were very concerned to read your review on trip advisor and have checked your comments thoroughly, could you please check that you did stay at the City Central Hotel Crn Albert and Wellesley Street Auckland as we have no record of your stay at all in February, there are a number of hotels in Auckland with a similar name, we never process a credit card with out the guest being present, we have never had a guest threaten to call the police with any room charge dispute and we most certainly would never check a guest into a room that had not been fully serviced. As the live in manager I am available at any time day or night and I would have been called for any queries or compalints. Regards Gloria Linstead

I stayed at the City Central on three separate occasions between May and June 2006, and I had a fantastic stay each time. I found this hotel to be very clean and quiet, and the desk staff were extremely helpful.

This hotel has a fantastic location in the middle of all the action of downtown and the port, is just one block away from the SkyTower and is an official stop on the AirBus route to and from the airport.

I stayed in one of the more basic rooms, which was definitely small, but had everything that I needed. If you get chilly, each room comes with a plug-in space heater. Alternatively, the windows can be open to let in a cool breeze when it is hot.

Some other great reasons to stay there are...
1) The housekeeping staff are great and extremely helpful in the laundry room -- Tina, in particular, is a gem!!
2) A complimentary continental breakfast (fully loaded with tonnes of fresh fruit, toast, pancakes, juices, cereal, tea and coffee) is included in your room rate.
3) If you are a repeat customer, they will give you better rates on your room.

I found this to be the perfect budget hotel for my needs, and I will stay nowhere else should I ever find myself in Auckland again.

Regardless of where you decide to stay in Auckland, I hope that you enjoy your time in this fantastic city!

Chris =)

I was visiting some friends in their room. Around 11pm someone came and banged on the door. We didnt answer the door because the way the person was banging on the door. After the 2nd or 3rd band, we finally opened the door and it was a lady standing there yelling that we needed to leave the room and that no visitors were allowed up in the rooms after 10 pm! She told us people were complaining about the noise. She was so rude and yelling at us as we sat there in the room. Yes we had some music on but it was only a small portable speaker and we were just sitting around talking and having a few drinks, minding our own business and not bothering anyone. We followed her downstairs and she refused to listen to us. Her behaviour as a manager was not professional at all! She did not stand there and listen to our side of the story but was so defensive and kept walking away instead of listening to us. I told her I was just a visitor, but I will NEVER EVER stay at this hotel and will definitely give her a bad review. While we were standing there another customer calls the desk complaining that noise was still coming from room 722 where we were at. To prove our point we told her it wasnt us because we were all standing in front of her and no one was in the room. So even after it was established it wasnt us causing all the commotion on the 7th floor, she still refused to apologise! Sure we may have broken the rule of no one in the room after 10 pm, but we were not the ones making noise and how she made us feel at the time was very unprofessional for a business that should make it their business to make all their guests feel welcome! Mira, you should really look at another line of work because you certainly do not have the patience or professionalism that is required in the Hospitality business.

Response from Econoldge c, Front Office Manager at Econo Lodge City Central
Responded 16 Jul 2015
We pride ourselves on the quality of custome care we provide, this is never the outcome we seek and sadden that this incident ended in such manner I had received a telephone call from the night manager at 11:45pm at this time he had been filtering quick a few complaints of noise and loud music, I never banged on the door, I knocked for about 30 seconds and the door was never opened by the guests, evenutually I resulted to using the master key to open the door, I have asked the very loud music to be turned down and the visitors to leave, the guest acknowledged they were aware of the no visitors after 10pm rule, which they signed on check in, but refused to leave, in some stage the argument became a bit intimedating (me against 4) and I left the room, just to be followed down the corridor by the guest, which contimue the argument infront of disgruntle guests The all conflict ended in reception, when they, very reluctantly, agreed to leave, sadly on their check our the next day, we have discovered they snuck one of the visitors back into the room for the night, we were not aware, till check out, that this was the case, when we asked we were told there were only 2 people in the room I had not go back to 722 after this incident, the noise which I attended on the 7th floor was enternal, and I am not sure what is the source of the misunderstanding As a result of this night we had paid over $200 of free nights to complaining guests, but will never know what is the real financial damage this incident caused us

Probably ok. As already mentioned, I would check with the hotel. With Skype, I made a lot of phone calls to AUS and NZ from the States before my trip to ask questions or verify things. Happy Traveling! You'll have a great time.
