Run down and dirty. Old beds, well used pillows and mattress. Very noisy rooms if you are above the road, with continual noise all night long, we stayed two nights and wouldn't return to this hostel. Toilets and bathrooms well overdue a refresh.

Just turned up in New Zealand and happened to stumble onto this hostel. Immediately I was welcomed by the manager & 'legend' that is Tom (great cook too) and everything was brilliant from there on.

The location is great, it's right in the city and there are many places to drink, eat and shop within seconds of leaving the hostel. The dorm rooms are basic to be fair, but clean enough and to be honest it's so friendly out in the reception/tv room that you rarely spend anytime in your room anyway.

From here you can organise everything like tours, buses & even pub crawls. The information is freely available from the helpful & well informed staff. They gave me a great discount on one of the Magic bus passes.

All in all I stayed there twice for a total of 2 weeks and I loved every minute. It's a wicked hostel and I recommend it to EVERYONE that I know is going to Auckland. Made so many good friends there, and that's the thing with this hostel. It has that friendly relaxed vibe that not all hostels can offer, and it makes such a difference when the staff and guests are all in tune. Stay there and have fun people ;-)

when we first came here we wanted to stay for a week. we ended up staying for 6 weeks and we came back a few times after that. we found friends here, the reception staff is awesome (jenny, tom, norm, we love u!), subway is just downstairs and there is always someone u can talk to. the prices are as far as i know some of the lowest in town and it's in a very convenient spot to explore the town!

if i could give less than one star i would. Took my money when i booked online and didnt even let me stay despite booking and paying over the phone. When i arrived to check in they turned me away, does not state in the terms and conditions anywhere. Offered my bank details instead and still turned away, all the team where hanging around with drunk guests which were more their priority than helping me. Poor service, should know the law instead of spouting off things they think is law, with no tourists youd think a business would treat customers better. I tried checking in at 1am and because i got turned away i had to sleep in my car. I dont even know when my money will be returned.

I have been living in QSB for over a year now and I love this place it's my home away from home and I have made life long friends here from all over the world. The staff are amazing and are really helpful and friendly. Most people who are long termers here all work and it's the kind of place where you can relax after a hard days work or you can socialize at the longboard bar which is located in QSB reception with staff and backpackers. I have stayed here this long because everyone is sooooo welcoming and AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will deffinatly be coming back to the QSB family where everybody knows your name....Handy tips check out the Auckland Arrival magazines (free) where you always get some coupons for free beer and special offers on activitys...... Come join our family we work hard and play very hard, and theres never a dull moment laughs a minute xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx love you QSB xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Would recommend this hostel, rooms were clean and big, was easy to socialize. Not a party hostel but the street is of course quite noisy. 8 bed dorm didn't feel too crowded. Free wifi is a huge plus and think hostel was good value for money. Way better than Nomads!

Assaulted by Staff Member... Hows that for a review. I stayed at this place one night this week. Frankly, I didn't expect much, just wanted somewhere cheap to keep my luggage and crash at while I went to a few interviews, so I checked into a dorm room. That evening I went out, and got back around 3am, so there was no one on reception. I went into the dorm room, and EVERY bed was occupied (apparently this isn't unusual). I wasn't going to wake anyone, so I went out into the lounge and crashed on a couch. Was woken up by an overweight guy yelling at me. I was hung over, and very disorientated, and whilst trying to figure out what was going on, and trying to explain myself, he kept yelling at me, and pushing me. I had my key in my pocket, but he wouldnt listen, and kept screaming at me to get out. In the end he actually wrapped his arms around me and tried to get me out. I managed to get away, pull my key out and we both called the police. THE POLICE... I spent a night on a couch, got assualted by a staff member and had to call the police... Is that what you want when you stay somewhere. The police got QSB to refund me, but apparently as there was no witness and frankly the guy didn't punch me so no bruises or anything, I can't push for assault charges. I understand that sometimes they have people sneak in and crash and must get sick of it, I understand that I was probably a dazed from going out and being asleep so might not have been too coherent when first woken, but NOTHING excuses this.

This dirty, noisy, smelly and uncomforable hostel is located on the first floor of a dilapidated shopping precinct in central Auckland. The only thing it's got going for it is its central location.
We chose this hostel at the airport and decided to pay for a private room instead of a dormitory, I think we paid about 70€. On arrival, we had to dodge the bags and rucksacks strewn around the sorry-looking reception area. Checking in was a slow, painful process (and we were asked to leave a large cash deposit in case we decided to steal the key or pillow cases). When we finally arrived in our room, we were shocked. A miserable, crumby, poky affair with a rickety metal bunkbed with no ladder, a tatty old carpet and a rusty window that wouldn't shut properly.
As we were absolutely exhausted from our 18-hour flight, we went to sleep immediately (3pm) but were woken up at 8pm by a group of 15 teenagers getting drunk in the corridor right outside our room. We asked them to keep the noise down, and although this seemed to work for a while, at 10pm things were getting rowdier, with girls screaming, boys chasing after them and yelling obscentities.
Around 11pm, totally depressed, we changed rooms, but the new room was right over a pub door and we were kept awake by drunkards on the street below, until at least about 4am.
The following morning, I informed the receptionist that it had been the worst night of my life, but judging by her reaction, she had heard it before.
Needless to say, this put me off backpackers for life and ruined our stay in Auckland, which was otherwise a very nice city!

My doubts about this placed were raised after i was 'greeted' by a snappy girl at the desk, having already waited 20mins at reception...
Eventually I was given a key but warned that the room may already be full, a fact that was confirmed after I walked upstairs into a musty four bed squat full of Korean girls who were less than happy that I had barged in on them.

I returned to reception to be allocated a new bed, but was told off by the same, this time even snappier, receptionist, and made to return to the back of the queue and wait another 20 mins. It seemed I had pushed in, despite the reason for my inquiry being her ineptitude.

This time I was given a bed in a 4 bed dorm on the first floor.
The room was grubby, as were showers, toilets... basically the whole place. The smell of stale cigarette smoke loomed throughout the dank corridors, amongst dead flies and used tissues.

My nights sleep totalled about 50minutes- not bad as I was literally attempting to snooze above a pumping stereo. It is the fist time in my life I was glad to see the sun begin to rise and end my purgatory. I was strangely uplifted by the din of the delivery lorry unloading beneath me at 5am as signaled the end to hours of Rihanna / Lady Gaga tedium that had assaulted my ear drums from midnight onwards...
Did I mention that the room was temperature was furnace-like?

If this review makes one person, just one, decide against staying in this understaffed, grimy, hovel of a place, I will sleep forever peacefully... the polar opposite to my night at QUEENS STREET BACKPACKERS!

In three words, JUST SAY NO!

Are there lockers available for backpackers?
Answer from Kiwi-Norm
Auckland Central, New Zealand4 contributions2 helpful votes
Hi Renne, As Manon mentioned there is a free day storage for backpackers which is used generally for people checking out and wanting to leave their belongings for the day, or checking in and waiting to go into the rooms at 2pm. You can also leave valuables behind reception in safe which is manned 24 hours per day. In the rooms themselves, the premium dorm rooms have lockers in them, you would need to have your own padlock for them though.
