The hostel is nice and relaxed, being slightly smaller than the larger ones in Auckland. The private room we had was quiet and basically furnished with a good WiFi connection. Although not in the centre of the city it has good access to the parnel train line and the neighbourhood is lovely. Very close to the Domain and Museum too. Be sure to check out the Bakery at the top of the street. But do shop before you get there - not much in close proximity.

I stayed here for my first two weeks after moving to Auckland for work. The location is great, just a couple of minutes walk to Parnell Road and it's collection of cafés, galleries, restaurants and bars, plus a small convenience store and laundrette which are very close. It is also not far from the Domain Park (great for sunny days) and Auckland War Museum (great for rainy days), plus you can either choose to walk into the city (about 30 minutes) or take one of the regular buses.

I stayed in a private double room which was a decent size with plenty of room for my things, although nowhere to hang shirts other than a few coathangers. A desk is provided which is next to power outlets. The room seemed a little old fashioned but appeared to be well maintained. It also had two entrances, one of which opened into a semi-external communal area. The bathroom facilities were share with the rest of the first floor, and although there didn't seem to be enough toilets and showers between us, this didn't seem to be much of a problem most of the time. There were one or two times when the bathrooms didn't appear to have been cleanead adequately.

The downstairs common areas consist of three main rooms, a living room space, a dining area and a kitchen. The living room was nice and clean , although as with most social space these days people didn't seem to talk to each other here so much as do whatever they needed/wanted to do on their phones, tablets and laptops. The dining space seemed adequate although one of tables was very wonky. However, the kitchen was by far the biggest letdown. It seems that noone ever rigorously cleans out the fridge on a regular basis. It was far to full for everyones food, and I suspect that there were several items which were left at the back and had been forgotten about. On top of this, guests seemed to be using bowls and cutlery to store food in the fridge, meaning that I often got up for breakfast without finding any spoons, forks, cups or bowls available to use. The kitchen was also far too small for the number of guests there, as especially noticable between 7-8.30pm each evening when you had to trip up over several other people to get your meal prepared!

The hosts seemed quite helpful and were able to respond reasonably quickly when, for example the power went off in my room one evening. However, it must be noted that they are also managing another backpackers further down the road so they are not always around, though they are available on a phone located outside reception.

One other thing to note is that the wifi isn't the best, with verying speed and reliability. I did get cut off a couple of times while attempting to phone my parents via Skype one evening.

In summary, it's not a bad hostel by any stretch, but could do with a few changes to bring it up to speed compared to other (better) Auckland hostels, and more attention is needed to cleanliness.

Former house of the Queen of Tonga, extended and with outbuildings. Main house divided into rooms and dorms. Tents in gardens. Full facilities, incl wooden dining table in area covered by plexiglass (it sometimes rains in Auckland). Self-service laundry. Friendly staff who didn't complain when we locked ourselves out at night and they had to drive over and unlock the door for us. Backpackers mix easily here.
The suburb of Parnell is close to the city centre (use "Inner link" bus to get to Britomart in centre). There are some shops and restaurants within walking distance. There is limited parking onsite.
Good value.

This is the best place I've stayed in Auckland.
Its a beautiful old house with a lovely outside area, big reading room, good kitchen and big dorms. The owner is really friendly and helpful and Parnell is a great place for cafes and has a fantastic fish and chips shop. Its a short bus ride into town or a 30 min walk.

We came back here again after traveling NZ for 6 weeks. This is just like home for us away home. We have stayed for 11 nights here. It was comfortable stay with nice hospitality. This hostel is already good, and is getting better year by year. We will come back next year, too.

We were looking very last minute for a place in Auckland to stay and City Garden was one of the only places left with rooms. We stayed for 3 nights in a tiny twin bunk room with shared bathroom. With better management this could be a great hostel, but as it is we could not recommend City Garden to other travellers and wouldn't stay here again.

+ good location, short walk from shops and restaurants and about a 20 minute walk to the City
+ large communal areas, nicely furnished lounge area
+ clean bathrooms and good water pressure
+ free wifi
+ free tea, coffee, spices etc.

- our twin bunk room was tiny, the bunk beds were child sized. Pretty dark and dingy.
- kitchen was filthy, the dirtiest kitchen we think we've ever seen, including during university living. The cleaners worked really hard to sort it out in the mornings, even doing other people's dishes who had left them there for the whole previous day, but by lunchtime it was disgusting. Lots of flies in communal areas because of the dirtiness. We had to wash pretty much everything before and after using it because cups, plates etc were so grimy.
- lots of long stayers seemingly contributing the majority of the mess and dirt, treating it like student digs and not being considerate of anyone else staying there.
- cliquey atmosphere due to long stayers
- a lot of guests smoking cannabis, wafts in to the upstairs rooms.

I stayed for 3months in my lovely tent at the first no one stay in tent (cost 20$ for your own space and calm quiet at night) had a work in Newmarket . Good location to Auckland CBD and nice restaurant . Normally people take buses to go shopping or hang out into city.
But I'm not city person. few times went to city and had enough. Mostly being Parnell and Newmarket. Coz really nice city . So this B&B is lots of traveling people and family friendly . Reception changes sometimes but nice people and try to DO for you if you ask for it :)
Owners are nice too. They come often to see the things need fix or replace and talk to you nicely:)
It was worth it to stay even a bit costly for living in tent.

Washing cloths and dry are 4$ per .

I definitely come back to this sweet home.
Thanks :) hope you have fun too:)

Friendly and informative check in, thankyou Daphne!, nice room I had to myself away from the dorms!. :)..there is no tv in the lounge and everyone was on couches not communicating with each other, was weird, everyone on their laptops/smartphones!. However the French people I met outside in the courtyard there, we drank and TALKED lots that night!.This hostel is cheap and tidy, the kitchen gets really busy though and manic, and there is bit of a steep walk up a hill if you want to go back to Parnell village after you have arrived at the hostel, so best you get all your shopping and booze before you check into this place.

This place is a dump. Not worth the price. Customer service terrible. Rooms dirty. Kitchen shuts at 10. No one around when we arrived and luckily another guest showed us where they keys were Reception shuts early but weirdly someone locks the kitchen at 10 pm. 2 members of staff we seen in the day were on their phones and couldn’t be bothered to help a guest with change for the washing machine. Do not stay here. For the price it’s a dump

In a classy neighbourhood and convenient location for the city but that is about it. This is very run down and scummy. Reminds me of an old student flat in Dunedin, only we didn’t make the mess.

The kitchen was grubby and needs a spruce up. I would not cook food in there or put food on any of the surfaces. The hot tap had fallen off so could not be used.

Rubbish was outside on the table and ground. The shower tray filled when being used as there was so much hair in the drain....the floor in the toilets and shower was wet and the basin to wash hands and face etc was filthy with hair in it too. I felt unclean after having a shower.

Bunk beds need new mattresses. They are dated and provide no firm support.

The whole place needs to be renovated. A bit of paint to freshen it up. Such a shame when it’s in such a great location.

Car parking on the street is a bonus, but I’d still prefer to stay elsewhere next time.
