Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hostel is nice and relaxed, being slightly smaller than the larger ones in Auckland. The private room we had was quiet and basically furnished with a good WiFi connection. Although not in the centre of the city it has good access to the parnel train line and the neighbourhood is lovely. Very close to the Domain and Museum too. Be sure to check out the Bakery at the top of the street. But do shop before you get there - not much in close proximity.

I initially checked in for a week but on arrival, changed it to 1 night so I can at least see if I like it after a night there...I didn't even make it that far. I booked my own room and it was scruffy...some old newspapers wedged in cracks in the wall. I didn't wanna kick off over that so planned on just staying one night, then never coming back but then a smell of cigarette smoke got stronger as i lay in the room. I went to reception but they were gone?? And for a few hours it seemed. I couldn't get through on a phone so sent 2 emails stating that I cant stay because of the smell etc but I still have not got a reply. The place is horrible, avoid

Exceptional staff, always there for you. The ensuite double room we stayed in was glorious. Great location in pretty neighbourhood. Common area and kitchen are nice and clean so are all the other facilities.

This place is a dump. Not worth the price. Customer service terrible. Rooms dirty. Kitchen shuts at 10. No one around when we arrived and luckily another guest showed us where they keys were Reception shuts early but weirdly someone locks the kitchen at 10 pm. 2 members of staff we seen in the day were on their phones and couldn’t be bothered to help a guest with change for the washing machine. Do not stay here. For the price it’s a dump

I'm here on a working holiday Visa and this place has been incredible. Social kitchen, common area, close to bus stops and definitely not a party hostel. Lots of dairy's close by and countdown isnt too far either. Nice to see the dorms well taken care of. Lots of street parking as well if you have a van.

City garden lodge was hands down the best hostel that I’ve stayed at through my travels in New Zealand. The beds are great, kitchen is well stocked and the showers are hot and powerful; WiFi is unlimited and free. The historic house is kept well maintained by the staff and the other guests really make it feel like home. The large verdant lawn and sounds of chirping birds makes you forget that you’re only a twenty minute walk from the CBD of New Zealand’s largest city. The kitchen can get pretty packed, but cooking at off peak times will remedy that. An awesome place to stay when you’re in Auckland, especially for those who want to avoid the party crowds. Highly recommend!

We really think this backpacker is very bad. It was not the cheapest but it was the worst in all New Zealand ! First of all it was very dirty with lots of dust in the room. In the bathroom there were lots of mold and dust ! The sheets in the room were old and pierced ! Then the kitchen was so small for the number of customers. No room in the fridge for our stuffs and no plates and not one glass !! Finally our stay get worse because of a very strange man...a customer I guess. He stayed all the day in the house, drinking vodka and speaking very loud...and during the night he woke us up because he was fighting against someone else and crying juste in front of the window of our room ! Run away !

Do not stay here! It’s not worth the hassle. My partner and I stayed here for 5 nights and had a private room. On around night 3, the ceiling was wet and leaking which dripped onto the bed leaving a huge wet patch. When we told the office about this, they said they had no other rooms to move us to so their solution was to give us a refund for 1 night’s stay, move the bed and put a new sheet on. 1 month later, we still haven’t received this refund. After calling numerous times, the office staff repeatedly told us to ‘call back in a couple of hours’ or ‘call back in 10 minutes’ (one time we called at around 1pm & were told to call back at 4 because she was on her lunch break?!) When we did so, they kept saying to call back. It has now gotten to the point where they are not answering our calls at all. Why offer us a refund if you’re not going to action it?! The place isn’t the cleanest and is incredibly outdated and fusty. But our biggest problem was with the terrible customer service. There is almost never anybody at the office and when you do speak to them, it seems they avoid the problem! Such a disappointment.

Stayed here for two nights. Glad I messaged in advance to let them know what time we were arriving as the office closes early at 7pm. The key was in the letterbox which was good. The bed was comfy. Yay! Bring ear plugs as it an be quite noisy but so is every backpackers I've stsyed at. The house is really big and was built for the queen of Tonga a long time ago so it is dated but I think that adds character to the place. Obviously you wouldn't expect much for the price so I thought it was great. It could probably do with a thorough clean. I would stay here again. The staff were friendly and helpful.
