Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Room was very modern and cosy. Very clean and tidy and well presented. We were very comfortable for our nights stay. Service from hotel staff was great and very efficient. We opted for an early checkout and this was not a problem for them. They gave clear instructions to us for early checkout that worked for us. We will be back again. Highly recommend

I really don’t know where to start because there are so many negatives to this place. I will say, if you want a relaxing, quiet, comfortable bed for several days, I wouldn’t come to this hotel. Maybe stay here if you just need to lay your head down for a night. The restaurant … our experience was negative from the start to the end. Whoever owns this place needs to review what is going on.

I found my whole stay incredibly disappointing right from check-in. Check-in was quick (once the only staff member got off a very long phonecall) but once I got to my room I realised it was a standard hotel room instead of the one-bedroom self-catering unit I had paid for. Back at reception they seemed surprised I was querying, disappeared for a moment and said my booked room was not available and they were fully booked. When I queried the difference in cost between my booking and what I received they argued the point, due to the concert that was on. I had paid increased rates for my booking so that was irrelevant. Eventually I was given a small refund. While the rooms had been partially renovated the aircon unit was not (and it was quite old). It proceeded to make a loud banging noise all through the four nights of my stay. Never again!!!

Don't be deceived. It's an old hotel and very dated. We stayed on the opposite side in what was promoted as the more "luxurious side". You could hear all the Auckland road noise 24/7. There were broken appliances in every room, at least the 3 rooms our group had booked. Jugs, irons, fridges - all broken, in all 3 rooms. Power plugs didn't work. Fridges leaked all the time. There were randoms sleeping outside on the top deck in the corner, which i assumed the hotel must be used as an emergency housing provider. We tried the Surrey Pub restaurant and bar - just don't. Talk about underwhelming. Poor service, slow staff, forgetful - drinks, meals, that you had even ordered, that you were even there....:) The pool !! Hmmm... Well, all i can say is, maybe a change of water and some chlorine after a good clean... just disgusting, and it's right next to the ugliest reception check-in area i've ever seen before in a hotel... I would not recommend this to anyone even on a Special discount offer. The group and I will never stay here again. Positives: Close to Ponsonby restaurants.

We stayed here for 2 nights. One of the nights was for a work "do" and then we stayed on for another night. Somewhat annoying to change rooms, but I can understand this may be necessary with a full hotel (although keeping us in the same room would have saved on cleaning). The first night was fine. The room was clean and serviced to an average level. Our second was not good at all. The room was much smaller, even though it was meant to be the same type. It was not cleaned properly with hairs in the bathroom sink and grubby carpets. There was no soap in the bathroom. The worst part was the window to the outside didn't close. We called reception who came up and tried to shut it, but she couldn't. Her response was "that's as good as it will get" We were not happy and asked to be moved or have someone fix it. She said she would get someone up to look at it. No one came. It was not ideal when it was raining - the hotel was already leaking as there were buckets all over the inside of the hotel catching the leaks. We complained at reception the next morning and said we did not want to pay the full $185 a night, the manager's response was "no, it's already cheap enough". I need to mention, this was the advertised rate, no discount had been given. Really appalling service at this hotel, I would not recommend it.

A very dated hotel with very dated furniture, beds, bathrooms. We were in the annex our in the car park where there was no lift so had to carry two 30 kilo cases up some wooden stairs. No safe in the room and the area wasn't the best with lots of signs mentioning to keep car valuables out of sight. The bed was quite comfortable and the shower (standing in a bath) had hot water but due to staff shortages, the room wasn't cleaned and no fresh towels. Not the hotel's fault but we were there on November 5th and fireworks went off all night!

Wow, from pulling up to the Hotel and seeing the run down building to the interior musty cigarette smell and then the rude girl at the counter, we didn’t have high hopes. This was confirmed when we had to call police as there was no answer from reception to assist with an incident occurring on site. This was understandably out of the Hotel’s control but why is there no after hours service and also no sympathy given we had 1 hour sleep. Mouldy ceilings, windows that are so broken they do not shut, and fearing for safety. Would never recommend.

This is a good hotel, and it is any hotels choice to be pet friendly or not. It is not a hotel's choice to be on Trip Advisors list of pet friendly hotels when they are not pet friendly. It is also not OK for the person answering the hotels phone and taking a booking, not to know that the hotels policy is not to welcome pets.

$150 for a very old grotty room was far too much. Yellowing walls, vintage aircon so loud you could not sleep with it on and the bathroom’s main feature was exploding particle board. The place was almost empty, and no coffee or shop restaurant open. Many of these faults could be forgiven if it was at a lower price point - I would say around $80 to $90. On the plus side the bed was clean and comfortable and there was a TV.

Hi Henrietta 2011, Thanks for your review.... not sure if you were even staying at the Surrey? Our bathrooms are tiled? It is really hard to try and rectify or even work out what room you could possibly have been in as you have chosen not to talk to any of the staff and keep your review anonymous? You are welcome to email me and discuss. Regards Denise

We had to stay here on the 15 June because of a cancelled flight by Air NZ - who put us in the Hotel for the night. Fortunately our room wasn't to bad although the screen on the shower was loose and we didn't use the shower. We arrived at 2.30 in the morning and were hungry having just come off a 3hr flight. Only food available was fizzy drink and chips - that was fine but the man on the desk keep saying how expensive it was. The hall was had tarps on the floor and puddles of water - next day we woke to Concrete grinding in the room next door and the smoke alarm in there going off. Bellows of dusk and noise. Other people on our canceled flight saying their beds were damp and like hammocks. The fire extinguisher in the hall way was two years out of date and there was leaks drip into the indoor pool form the roof above that had bits of wood propping up the skylights. The ladies in the breakfast room next morning weren't friendly and weren't eager in serving or handing out the menu - couldn't be bothered attitude. We just asked for toast but weren't given an butter.

Response from Denise King, General Manager at The Surrey Hotel
Responded 20 Jun 2021
Hi Rachel. Its difficult for everyone when a flight is disrupted and you cannot get to your destination. Late at night it can be difficult to find rooms for everyone and on this occasion we were advised that you would be checking out prior to 7.30am when the construction guys arrived. Obviously we knew we had construction happening in adjacent rooms. Our fire extinguishers are all checked on an annual basis for our building warrant of fitness and all things related to fire, exits, etc are checked on a monthly basis by an outside contractor and are documented. The reason for the construction is we are upgrading our rooms. Our beds are not like hammocks or damp, but I think you knew that too. Everyone else on the flight was very complementary and loved the hotel. I am sorry you had to stay here. Kind regards Denise King.
