Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed here for 2 nights. One of the nights was for a work "do" and then we stayed on for another night. Somewhat annoying to change rooms, but I can understand this may be necessary with a full hotel (although keeping us in the same room would have saved on cleaning). The first night was fine. The room was clean and serviced to an average level.
Our second was not good at all. The room was much smaller, even though it was meant to be the same type. It was not cleaned properly with hairs in the bathroom sink and grubby carpets. There was no soap in the bathroom. The worst part was the window to the outside didn't close. We called reception who came up and tried to shut it, but she couldn't. Her response was "that's as good as it will get" We were not happy and asked to be moved or have someone fix it. She said she would get someone up to look at it. No one came. It was not ideal when it was raining - the hotel was already leaking as there were buckets all over the inside of the hotel catching the leaks.
We complained at reception the next morning and said we did not want to pay the full $185 a night, the manager's response was "no, it's already cheap enough".
I need to mention, this was the advertised rate, no discount had been given.

Really appalling service at this hotel, I would not recommend it.

Booked a family room. Cost was inflated due to concert. Great walking distance for Eden park and easy to access City and the Zoo via bus or Uber.
Had everythign we needed, and was clean,
Family room was a little cramped and no area to sit and relax other than a small dining table . It was clean and staff were very helpful. Towels were exchanged daily for clean ones. Comfortable beds and great shower. Pool is fun although no access after 7pm and not allowed to use till 10am so early morning swin would have been nice , lots of food choices nearby although the supermarket is currently closed, The restaurant onsite did a nice pizza and breakfast was reasonable.

A very dated hotel with very dated furniture, beds, bathrooms. We were in the annex our in the car park where there was no lift so had to carry two 30 kilo cases up some wooden stairs.
No safe in the room and the area wasn't the best with lots of signs mentioning to keep car valuables out of sight.
The bed was quite comfortable and the shower (standing in a bath) had hot water but due to staff shortages, the room wasn't cleaned and no fresh towels.
Not the hotel's fault but we were there on November 5th and fireworks went off all night!

We needed to accommodate and provide meals for our team who were working away from home on a project doing 12 hour days. The team at The Surrey, especially Natalie and the Chef went out of their way to accommodate us, providing comfortable clean rooms, healthy nutritious and substantial meals both in the restaurant and take away lunches. They worked with us to tailor this package to suit our needs and budget, all the while providing a friendly, responsive and amazingly helpful service. We will definitely be using them for all our business needs in the future and strongly recommend them to others. Carla Dobbyn, CALD Enterprises

$150 for a very old grotty room was far too much. Yellowing walls, vintage aircon so loud you could not sleep with it on and the bathroom’s main feature was exploding particle board.
The place was almost empty, and no coffee or shop restaurant open.
Many of these faults could be forgiven if it was at a lower price point - I would say around $80 to $90.
On the plus side the bed was clean and comfortable and there was a TV.

Hi Henrietta 2011, Thanks for your review.... not sure if you were even staying at the Surrey? Our bathrooms are tiled? It is really hard to try and rectify or even work out what room you could possibly have been in as you have chosen not to talk to any of the staff and keep your review anonymous? You are welcome to email me and discuss. Regards Denise

We held an event with approx 50 attendees in the function room next to the restaurant / bar area during the weekend. It was absolutely perfect - our guests absolutely loved the decor and commented that it felt like we were in an old hollywood setting. Our entertainer said it was the perfect space for his performance too. The venue has a natural atmosphere / personality, is unpretentious, and we didn't even have to do any dressing to the function room at all. The bar location was super convenient so guests could easily move between the function area and the bar to get drinks. The catering was great as well, couldn't have been better! Thanks so much to the team at the Surrey for being flexible and helpful, appreciated.

As this is the first time staying in Auckland i have nothing to compare too.
I liked the location where we could take a stroll round the block and there were a few convenient shops close by. It had everything we needed but 1 night would be enough as i felt quite closed in.
I felt the rooms could have been cleaned better as there were stray hairs on the bed cover and the shower was not as clean ad I'd like.
Tv remote had no batteries and couldnt find buttons on tv so tv was stuck on same channel and same volume which can be hard with a toddler.
Check in staff extremely friendly and helpful and allowed us an early check in which was much appreciated.
Although this would bot be my first choice to stay at again it certainly wouldnt be ruled out as a no either.

When I booked online for the Surrey Hotel, I was expecting a hotel not a motel. We were told we were across the road where we parked right outside the room which was fine. Entering the room and my husband was so close to having a full bag of rubbish dropped on him by the cleaner from the floor above. We were of the impression there was free WiFi but this was limited to a minuscule amount. When the people from above us came back to their room at 1am we heard every step up the stairs, inside and every word they said like the walls/ceiling was paper thin. This went on for a few hours so it was not a restful nights sleep. And I wasn’t even wearing my hearing aids! Won’t be going back

Good Morning Mrs Collins, You booked with Expedia and it is quite clear on the Expedia website that you booked a motel room across the road from the hotel. If that wasnt the room you wanted we would have happily changed you to the main hotel. I cannot comment on the WIFI except to say it is free and you can use whatever you want? As for the people in the room above I am sorry they were noisy, we have 24 hour staff and a quick phone call to reception could have made all the difference for you. The walls and ceiling are not paper thin and were upgraded a couple of years ago to the current building standard. Sometimes at night when it is very quite noise does travel. Thanks for your feedback. Kind regards Denise.

No onsite parking; was told we could park in the magician's carpark once he left, asked when that would be, she had no idea... not helpful, ended up parking on road. A lot of miscommunication on where we were first told we could park.
Went to our room and the toilet didn't flush after using it. Room was very nice.
Was told we can't move as fully booked so basically we were left standing in reception. No customer service skills there. Cant stay in a room with no flushing toilet! Went to order food upstairs at pub. Was told a long wait cause there were five dockets in front of us but couldn't say how long wait. Was not that busy.
Went back downstairs to reception to be told noone answering her calls. She showed us a text she sent. Mentioned health and safety and suddenly she had a room that we could change to as the people hadn't turned up. It was a family room which definitely was a downgrade. Not sure how five people could fit in that unit, especially the bathroom, it needs an upgrade. It was very high for my 72 year old mother to step over the edge of the bath to have a shower. The beds were low and soft.
Also went back up to the pub to be told it could be 40 minutes wait for a pizza bread; was only 10 minutes but the worst pizza bread ever.
Thank God we were only there one night.
Disappointed to say the least.

Unfortunately we do not have a hotel shuttle service although there are shuttles available at the airport that will bring you to the hotel. We would recommend that you use "Super Shuttles" !
