Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hostel is very basic. Staff quite rude and disinterested. In the week I stayed there only saw a maximum of 4 spoons in the draw. Nothing washed up correctly. Only bonus is quite a few laundry machines and it's not too loud. There were a lot of long term people smoking weed on a daily basis on the roof and outside the hostel. Would not return

As we were attending a concert we decided to book a double room with shared bathroom for one night... The Gents section of the toilet/showers were very clean, the Women section not.. it looked only a few guys where sleeping in same floor, but a lot of females...
The room was spartan but clean and at night all was quiet...
We could store our gear during the day before checking in.. for free.
Location is good, only 5 min walk from the busstation, near shops and restaurants..

BUT: when checking in we had to pay a key deposit (no problem ), as we were leaving next day at 7 to catch a bus, we asked if reception was open at that time.. No worries was the answer " we open at 7". At 7 next morning nobody was there , at 7.15 still nobody was there.. we were forced to leave to catch our bus without deposit back.. And we were not the only one... DO WHAT YOUR PROMISE...

Frienz hostel is one of the cheaper hostels to choose from around the centre of Auckland, and the basic accommodation reflects this price. I stayed in a 14 bed dorm, the curtains didn't close properly which was annoying but not the end of the world. The bunk beds weren't the comfiest but they did the job!

There are only a few showers and toilet to a floor, and they are separated into male and female, however they were never that busy - even though the hostel was quite busy!

The place was cleaned like three times a day, particularly the kitchen area, which was amazing - although made it smell like cleaning products constantly!

The hostel's in a pretty good spot, really close to Albert park. They also have a courtyard and rooftop area which is pretty cool, and you're actually allowed to drink there which makes a change!

Overall, I would stay here again, it's cheap enough and it was only really the other backpackers that ever caused a problem, but the staff were very friendly and sorted out any complaints quickly (not that we had any, but a few others in our room did!)

Stayed here for about three weeks, great kitchen with an oven and cleaned often. Activities such as film nights and bbq’s which was great for us towards the end of our trip when funds were running low. The mattresses aren’t the best but it’s cheap and friendly so I highly recommend to any traveller/backpacker

My first time ever in a hostel and I was pleasantly surprised. Nice and clean, staff were friendly, great location and amenities. Great value for money. Originally booked for a week and booked an extra week. Sociable and friendly. Would definitely book again.

I booked a night for 5 people using they website, at the end of the booking it appeared that I had paid 6.85 NZ$ but when I checked my bank account I realised they charged 40 cents of NZ$ more, not a big deal. However as this seemed unusual the day of the checkin I asked some clarification. The only answer I received was: "It is not our responsibility, because when you book from our web-site you directed to another website" and second arrogantly he told me "This is a difference of 40 cents, I will give you 40 cents from my pocket"! That man was awful! I was asking what was going on with the booking not the money back! Beside that, the hostel is just an average hostel in the city centre of Auckland, so if you can avoid it!

P.S. Then I found by myself the reason why they charged me more: when you book through frienz website, regardless of which currency you pay (even if you use a NZ credit card) they charge in GB pounds, so you have to pay the conversion!

So after 11 months of traveling New Zealand I had 3 weeks to kill in Auckland. A friend told me about Frienz and I thought I'd give it a go (thinking it would be more welcoming than the bigger hostels) I didn't like the fact you got 'allocated' a bed in the dorm, so you couldn't choose if you wanted a top or bottom bunk. Reception were kind enough to swap me the day after when another bed became free.
The 12 bed dorm i was in was so hot and we were only provided with a duvet and not a thinner sheet. A lot of the people in the dorm seemed to be workers or come in at stupid hrs too so the max sleep you would get was about 3 hrs undisturbed. Everyone seemed to be very clicky and nobody spoke.
That was just the small things... I was taking a shower on my first morning when i heard someone stood outside my shower for ages. I girl then shouted over "how long you going to be cos i need to clean" I was fuming at the point that i felt the need to rush my shower. When i spoke to reception about this they had a word with the girl who then started crying, and they felt the need to tell me this as they 'apparently' didn't mean it in a rude way, which then made me feel bad and went to go speak to her!
The worst one was on my 3rd day, I went to use the kitchen for the first time and in the space of 2 minutes i saw 4 cockroaches crawling around the walls and where the cutlery is stored!!! Again I told reception and his answer was "yeah it's a very old building so we can get them, there's not much we can do".

Yes I know this is a budget hostel at $28 a night but you expect a bit better don't you think!

Good central location, and you shouldn't expect too much from a budget hostel. However...

Dirty, scummy and faulty showers, stuffy bedrooms, bad mattresses and it does not look anything like the photos as it is run down to say the least. Lift appeared to be not working or completely unsafe for use. Altogether the above mixed with an unwelcoming atmosphere that attracted some boozy unfriendly travellers makes this place a hostel you'd want to avoid.

Stayed there last year with my girlfriend in a double room. First night we agreed to stay in a twin room, because there was no double room available. Changed the next day into the double room, which was obviously not clean. We mentioned that at the reception and the baldy, weird guy was shouting at us, as if it was wrong to complain... It took a while before somebody cleaned it and even then it wasnt really clean. The kitchen was a desaster and showers were broken. Think you can get a way better deal in this normally so friendly country...

I've stayed in many hostels and this was by far the worst.

The mattresses are so thin you can feel every slat, the bed feels like it will tip whenever someone goes up the top.

There are passive aggressive notes left all over the hostel and the kitchen is always a mess.

Only positive is location.
