Detailed Reviews
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Lantana. Denish is the manager and he was very attentive to our requests and needs. He genuinely wants guests to have a positive experience, and makes himself easy to contact. The staff are all very nice, and the owners also go out of their way to accommodate requests. Overall, this is not a party lodge, but a quiet place with many guests maintaining day jobs. The facilities are well maintained and they do their best with a small shared space as it is close to town and located in one of the oldest districts in Auckland, Parnell, which is really fun to stay in with buses and shops close-by. I would recommend Lantana to my friends as a well run backpackers lodge.

It provides a silence place to stay but you take a big step to city hub. You could handle your affairs in the centre easily and handily. The location is close to the Parnell Shops, make you easily to enjoy the shopping and delicious gournment here. The hotel manager is very helpful, he assists visitors in all aspects of traveling, even find a lot for your car parking.

I was just about to start working and had interviews here so it was ideal. Friendly if I wanted to chat to people but fairly quiet. Well located within walking distance of centre. Kitchen fairly small though

I stayed here a while ago and ended up leaving in the middle of the night (out of fear). Let me pre-empt this by saying that I have given countless reviews and most are five stars (I don't really like to give low reviews). I have travelled to nearly sixty countries, hundreds of cities and different types of accommodation, and this is by far the worst I have ever stayed in. I have no agenda as I don't even know anyone who lives in New Zealand , let alone Parnell, Auckland.
The hostel as I understand is being run by a couple. I researched the reviews to make sure that I wasn't alone and can see by the bad reviews that I most definitely am not.
Items of mine kept going missing when I was backpacking a while ago (of little importance but my belongings nonetheless - gloves, shower-gel etc) three times a row I asked about them and they ended up in lost property. On the third time I asked if there was anything else of mine in lost property that I hadn't thought to miss yet - the answer was a sharp no and I thought nothing of it.
Later that evening when I was in the shower I heard loud scary bangs on the door - I didn't answer (I was in the shower) and then it went away. I then went to sleep and in the middle of the night the wife let herself into MY ROOM! shook me awake and said if I wasn't gone by the morning then she would throw me out and smash up my backpack. As I was in bed and half asleep I was blindsided and unprepared and a little frightened.
Alongside this I saw the husband really shout at a female guest who then left in the middle of the day - it didn't seem like she had done anything wrong. It was nasty and scary - I felt really bad for her.
The next morning I went to the Auckland tourism place downtown to complain - they apologised and said this isn't the first time they have had these complaints and that they had already stopped recommending this place.

I came here 3days before and now keep my staying. It is located in Parnell, near by CBD but very calm area. Here I can use a kitchen so can save money and enjoy cooking. Clean bed and bathrooms are comfortable. Hot showers with plenty of water are quite nice.
And people are very friendly. I'm not good at English so I felt anxiety before I came here, but it was actually needless. Now I'm enjoying my stay.
I spend my first night in NZ at a cheap backpackers in CBD. Indeed it was cheaper than here, however, here I can enjoy strong free-Wifi access and clean facilities. Both were not on the backpackers I stayed my first day. So I recommend here!

When i decided to right reviews on tripadvisor I made an agreement with myself that only the very best or very worst of the places iv been and seen would get reviewed by me. two five star reviews iv written so far exceptional service and experience, it saddens me that my third has to be a 0 stars. I've traveled around Australia for two year and this was the first hostel my girlfriend and I stayed in when we arrived in Auckland. Unfortunately we paid for a week and didn't want to lose our money so decided to stay the duration. when you arrive at the hostel you will notice demanding signs around the place not like the nice cute signs you often see around hostel like "please remember to wash and clean your dishes its not mums house" but like "any shoes left outside will be confiscated by management" the couple who run the place are incredibly rude strict and aggressive whatever they say goes. I whilst I was there i witnessed them throwing a 22yr old girl onto the streets at 10 30 pm because she had asked where her bedding was? bearing in mind that they had charged her $25 to sleep on the sofa in the common area as the beds were full. i felt so strongly about this girls treatment that I had to get involed in the situation and advise the owners of the poors decision to put a young girl of her age at serious risk. I was met by a torrent of accusations that it was the girls fault and they were doing the right thing and she had it coming. although the receptionist manage to keep her head in this dispute the manager did not and became increasingly irate to the point that I had to warn him to choice his words carefully as I am not a young girl and certainly wouldnt tollerate being spoken to in that manner. this wasn't the only problem here on our last night a couple checked in late at night and came into our room at around 2 30 am at 3 am the owner came storming into our 8 bed dorm turned the lights on and start shouting at the couple well everyone else was trying to sleep. the couple had accidentally picked up the wrong key from the letter box and were meant to be in a different room. they were also thrown out the owners had threatened to call the police to have them removed when the couple resisted. this was that couples first night in newzealand they arrived late on a plane so i assume they spent there first night in a wonderful country on the streets because of terrible business practice. the only saving grace for this place is that the other guests were awesome. I would highly recommend giving this one a miss people like this don't deserve your money it sickens me that they own four hostels around that area which is such a shame because the area itself is lovely

Stayed here for around 10 days in a 4 bed dorm and choose it because of the free, good and unlimited Wifi and free street parking - both rare in Auckland. It is located in Parnell within 20-30min walk to the CBD, with 1-2 hills in between. Also there is a nice, small park close by.
It's a small and comfy hostel with a nice living room including TV, AC and free PC's. The kitchen is a bit small and closes during night time. But if you have to leave early you can do an arrangement with the staff. There is just one washing machine, which you are not allowed to use between 9am and 1pm. There are 2 dryers and a clothes line (with just a few pegs). During the day you can ask for a mobile radiator for your room. Also lockers are available, but you have to bring your own lock. The staff is very nice and caring.
During winter season you get the BBH member price even if you are not a member.

Its a nice small hostel, with a very peaceful and friendly vibe to it. Everything was very clean and never really had any problems. I felt very safe keeping my belongings on my bed and nothing was stolen. The management is very friendly and open. The only thing lacking was activities for social bonding. A lot of backpackers did have pool-table or board games to bond over. It would be great to have something like that to encourage social interactions.
