We had the best family get together at Hillingdon over the weekend. This is a fabulous property, lots of beautiful accommodation and such incredible surroundings. The house is very well fitted out with nearly everything you need, 5 large bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, beautiful linen and fluffy towels. We made good use of the pool, bbq and croquet set. Would totally recommend to any group wanting time out together.

If you're looking for a place to base yourself and are not fussed about being in the centre of it all, then Endsleigh Cottages just outside of Havelock North are great. We stayed in the Middle House which had such character and charm. Breakfast provisions were more than enough and I only we wished we could have stayed longer. Wineries and Ta Mata peak are all within about 20 mins drive.

My wife and I stayed just one night in the small one bedroom historic restord bushman's cottage, which has polished floors, and is located next to the owner's house. It does'nt have cooking facilities, just a small fridge and small flat screen TV; separate bathroom and a verandah out the front with a small deck, table and three wooden chairs. It's fairly tight with no where really to store bags etc. The cottage is adequate for a 1 or 2 nights stay, any longer and I'd strongly recomend you "upgrade" to the other two cottages on the property which we were shown through - the separate one bedroom cottage or the 2 bedroom cottage. These are more expensive but have alot more space in them, including separate lounge and kitchen, larger decks in front and they have separate access/driveways. They also have views out over the countryside from the exterior decks. The 3 cottages on the property are all set in gardens and lawns, the setting is peaceful, tranqui yet only 2 km from the Havelock North Village. Our cottage was clean and a continental breakfast of toast with jams and cerals provided. A nice touch was a small vase of freshly cut David Austin roses and a bowl of fresh fruit. We will come again but stay in the larger cotages next time.

No light bulbs in two lamps; overhead bulbs completely inadequate; night lights burned out; room heater not working; doors so ill-fitting that half-inch and greater gaps let in cold, moist air and two of the four were impossible to lock; shriveled, dry mandarins in dusty dish on table (dusty due to door gaps); a congregation of miss-matched, chipped, and cracked dishes with missing handles and no four wine glasses the same size;no cloth dinner napkins or tablecloth; extremely tarnished silverware and no teaspoons; nasty,scum-producing 'Imperial Leather'soap; hot water so luke-warm that it was impossible to shave except by heating water in a pan on the stove; long-used jelly and marmalade jars had only small amount in bottom of each and dried bits along jars; finger marks in small amount of peanut butter left in jar; honey pot with knife marks and toast crumbs; food items we were invited by Margie hardy to request when booking was made two months prior were substituted with inferior items; one washcloth for two people for the four-day-three-night stay; neither CD player nor TV worked as per instructions but Denis Hardy responded, "I don't know nothing about them," and two hours later Margie attempted to turn them on (and failed when following posted instruction sheet), and needed a flashlight, in daylight, at 6:30PM, to even see CD and TV controls, so dark it was in living room, in spite of overhead light and all three lamps turned on; dusty floors throughout the cottage (due to door gaps); stale tea; old coffee; plastic-tasting muesli due to storage in plastic container; lawn was not mowed and ragged; dead flower plants in bone-dry pots on porch; and in spite of booking arranging to pay remained $600.00--$300.00 deposit paid on booking-- at checkout, Denis came round the previous afternoon and hung around like a bad smell until he was paid; Piako Yoghurt and organic eggs were great. And yet "Heritage & Character Boutique Accommodation' brochure states: Our personally hosted properties have a reputation for delivering luxurious accommodation, fabulous breakfasts, generous hospitality, and warm interaction with guests. Our exceptional hosts will pamper you..."

We stayed in the Middle Cottage for two nights in June. We can’t recommend Endsleigh Cottages enough – absolutely wonderful stay. The house is large and full of character, and gardens beautiful.
The house is equipped with everything you’ll need, right down to a full laundry room which we found very useful after two weeks on the road. The sitting room is very comfortable with wonderful fireplace, video machine and music centre. Separate double bedroom, and very large open plan kitchen & dining room.
We stayed in a number of expensive luxury accommodations during our trip, but Endsleigh Cottages scores in the top 3.
Location is a short drive outside of Havelock North, and the cottages are set in a quiet rural setting complete with donkeys.

We had a lovely relaxing five day stay in the smallest of the Endsleigh cottages. We were in town for a friend's wedding, but had just come off a frantic couple of months, so this was a really great place to relax in between wedding activities. The cottage is very peaceful and romantic, in the middle of lovely gardens, and the owners are friendly but not intrusive (the perfect balance). We mentioned a minor issue with the bath plug and it was replaced the same day (on a Sunday, no less!). We both slept extremely well (and for many hours!) in the cottage, and the big bath is lovely to share. The owners provide excellent bread and muesli for breakfast, and the cottage is equipped with a toaster and kettle. Five days was perhaps a bit too long to stay in this cottage as it doesn't have a full kitchen, but it would be perfect for a three day stay (or longer if you eat out a lot), and the other two cottages (which are bigger and have their own kitchens) look amazing. It is in a good location, five minutes drive from Havelock North (with a supermarket), but you definitely need a hire car for this part of NZ. Overall - a great stay, highly recommended for couples.

There's nothing like local knowledge for a great start to a holiday. Denis and Margie were superb hosts; friendly and knowledgable and a glass or two with Denis as the sun went down made for a highly enjoyable evening as we looked out over the plains across the farms to the mountains beyond.

Looking forward to returning with friends for a big long weekend at Hillington, their beautiful large self-catering homestay nearby, soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and loved the authentic cottages and hearing about the restorations. A wonderful place to stay in a beautiful part of the world with thoroughly enjoyable hosts. Owner operated always best. Owner operated and restored is even better.

The donkeys took some getting used to (I wondered what the morning wake up was - Denis didn't seem the type to be playing the bagpipes off-key) but Winston and Humphrey were crowd favourites with our two children.

Many thanks for a wonderful holiday. We look forward to Hillington!!

Greeting from the hosts was professional and warm. Laundry facilities a plus. Setting idyllic. Heritage 5-star should not mean just old but should also be charming. The toilet fixture did not work and we had to stand on a chair and jiggle the cistern every time we flushed. Some dishes in the cupboard were soiled. Cutlery, crockery and cookware were old and worn. We usually stay in luxury accommodations and would not list this one as such. Perhaps hosts could stay in the cottage (we stayed in the middle one) for a couple of nights to experience what their guests might. Overall, a 3.5 star experience rather than the advertised 5-star one.

We spent two wonderful nights here .The cottages are fabulous - there are 3 in total - two are restored and one is a replica. The detail in each is exact, location of each is private and amazing and they are equipped with everything you could possibly need.
It is a trip back in time and I could almost imagine my Granny popping out a batch of Anzac Biscuits from the oven.I could write pages and pages - it was just great.
But to top it all off - the owners Margie & Denis were the icing on the cake- not just dedicated to saving our history but great & generous hosts as well.Thank you both - we'll be back.
Also do check out their largest project Muritai - this is a whole historic house & garden - single party but with 5 bedrooms - so lovely we wanted to move in and stay.

My husband and I recently returned to stay in the small cottage again and we love it. The small cottage is beautiful, clean and quiet. Waking up to the sounds of tui's in the tree is fabulous and only made better by the comfortable bed and fantastic breakfast provided. This cottage has character and is in a beautiful setting, absolutely recommend it as a great place to stay and great value for money in Havelock North.
