Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Normally I never write reviews, so this will be my first one but I’m doing it to hopefully save you guys a disgusting, afwul horror hostel. Yesterday we arrived late and there was no one at the reception, although they said there would be someone waiting. After 10 minutes some guy came from an alley and asked if he could smoke his cigarette first before helping us. Not verry friendly en guest friendly if you ask me.. Later he tried to let us pay twice, because we already paid with creditcard in advantage but he tried to let us pay again. After this, the hell was about to begin. We got our keys and were searching for our room for 10 minutes, because we didn’t get the right instructions. When we opened our door there were like 3 cockroaches on the walls, weird feathers of birds spread around the room randomly and everything else was so afwull. The halls smelled like piss and sweat, i literally almost throwd up. When I went to the bathroom to get toilet paper to remove the cockroaches in our room there were like 5 cockroaches in the bathroom as well. It was so disgusting…. We checked out first thing in the morning and when we told the guy at the reception about the cockroaches he just said: “Ah yeah, welcome in Perth, they are just everywhere. And it’s also ‘the season’(?!)” I’ve been in a lot of hostels in Australia and Asia as well, and this was by far the most disgusting one ever! Don’t go here!

Response from Daniel Yoo, General Manager at The Emperor's Crown Hostel
Responded 9 May 2023
Thank you for the response. It is unfortunate that some guests expect a 5 Star outlet when booking for budget accom and while we fully appreciate that people always look for bargains it is unfortunate we did not meet your expectations. While you have raised some areas that we have been able to address there is little that we can do to address the pest control above what is already been done. Due to having a shared lane with 8 restaurants we are reliant on every business doing their part. Cockroaches are rampant in Perth during the december period and migrate/ explore across areas. While we make every effort to ensure all rooms are treated frequently. We wish you both the best on your travels.

I had to do full on cleaning how filthy dirty it was the room. Than I was moved to other room and when I ask ONLY to floor to be vacuumed , Manager ask me to clean it myself! Kitchen has no utilities, plates and the pots were sooo dirty that you couldn't use it. People smoked in the rooms , alcohol bottles everywhere in common area , bathrooms were not clean for days ... If there was a ZERO I would rate it as such.

I stayed for 6 days in Perth and wanted to live close to the CBD, especially the train station. The Perth train station is within walking distance, there are also busses going nearby, up and down the road, as well as the blue CAT bus which takes you to the Northbridge area for good food. I booked a single room with bathroom and the bed was comfortable, the shower had hot water, the toilet and sink are functional. There is also a split system AC, a fridge, TV and free Wireless Internet. Everything is a bit basic and a bit older, but exactly what I needed. There is a large shared kitchen with utensils, shared fridge, and everyone one has a compartment to put items. I cooked once, but then just ate out, but for those with specific dietary requirements, or picky about what they eat, you can cook your own food every day. For me I thought, pay less on the place you're staying, and spend more eating out and having a good time. Some people staying are a bit sketchy, but I felt safe and spent the evening in my room watching TV and on the computer. All in all, the value is excellent, great location and so much better value than staying in an expensive hotel, as long as you can accept that everything is a bit older and the low price attracting certain people...

I don't recommend it. The refrigerator is too dirty. I didn't want anything in there. And someone touched my drink. And my European roommate was so selfish and bad-tempered. That's where I don't want to go again.

In my stay, as an one person backpacker, I slept in a very crouded room on the top bunk witch no space to place my personal stuff exept the locker. The common room smelled like marihuana all the time and the average age was around 40 years old. On my last day someone passed out in the bathroom because of an overdose and I had to fix an ambulance. I will never set a foot in this place again.

I needed a cheap and convenient place to stay for 2 nights while on a work trip, Emporer's Crown met my needs. It is clean, easy to walk to from train, quiet over night, and has excellent facilities. The reception team are very professional and helpful.

Stayed here a couple of times in 6 bed dorms. Price overall is almost unbeatable value for money is great beds are comfortable and staff are friendly. A couple of things to be improved: shower curtains and bath matts would stop the floors been drenched and ensuring the bathrooms at least are cleaned regularly. Overall not horrible but definitely needs improving.

Woke up 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM because of garbage depots made and being collected at the rear of the hostel. Until 00:30 AM people were talking in the brightly lit corridor with comfortable seats in front of the rooms. Phone conversations and snooker and football game tables in the common area ensure noise is almost always there. You can sit outside, but mostly people who smoke sit there. Especially in the evenings the common area is very crowded because there is no WiFi in the rooms. On the bright side: staff is friendly and efficient, beds are comfortable, modern facilities (aircon in the common area) tables and chairs, soft seats.
