Detailed Reviews
First time staying at this hostel and I can say I’ll definitely stay again. I didn’t really use any of the facilities, I was just using it as a place to sleep while I was in town catching up with friends.
The kitchen looks nice and with plenty of space. There a cafe that serves light snacks. I liked that the had a water fountain available for filling up your bottle.
There are lockers available for a fee, to store your luggage before and after check-in.
The bathrooms on the 2nd floor were really nice and I liked that you have to use your keycard to get into them.
The hostel is a short walk from Southern Cross that has a Woolies and then there’s a Coles a bit further away, but still walkable.
Will definitely stay there again

Hi Deirdre - hope this will just be your first stay of many at a YHA - we have more than 70 hostels around Australia to choose from! A few years ago, YHA stopped selling bottled water, and installed the water fountain you mention. We sell a BPA free reusable water bottle at cost and encourage all guests to use these instead of single use bottles. This is all part of our sustainability actions, and you can read more on our website. Thanks for high lighting it. Hope to see you again soon.

Superb location on the fringe of the CBD.
Loads within walking distance or hop on to the free trams.
Very helpful and friendly staff and the hostel has a ‘good vibe’ with people of all ages chilling in a capital city.
Certainly a good base if you need somewhere to put your head down for a couple of nights at a very reasonable price.
Trams and trains are directly outside, so I’d recommend earplugs (they sell them if you forget) and rooms are small, but tidy and comfortable. You can have en-suite for not much more.
Being a hostel some of the cleanliness is dependent on the guests attitudes around the communal showers/toilets. Our floor wasn’t too clever, but that’s just life!
Would definitely come back when next in Melbourne

Thanks for coming to stay and glad you enjoyed our location - that free tram is certainly useful to get around the city centre area. We're also only 5 minutes walk from the Skybus terminal if coming in from the airport. Hope to see you again.

Firstly I would like to comment on how perfect the hostels location is. It's right next to a tram stop and Flinders station is a short walk away. However we found some of the facilities slightly disappointing compared to the other YHA in Melbourne. The kichen is large however there are very limited seats for eating your cooked meals. It wasn't particularly clean either. The room was adequate with a wall fan and a comfortable bed. Overall it's an average hostel with enough to see you through a couple of nights. However, it does have some things that let it down.

Hi Adam - sorry that you found the dining space tight - it is a pretty large room, but long rather than wide, and a mix of tables and some bench seating, but we find that allows people to share tables and meet other travellers. But our sister hostel, Melbourne Metro, is in a quieter spot in North Melbourne - very urban Melbourne inner city vibe - that some guests prefer. It also has car parking on site, whilst we have the free tram outside!

This is an ideal location in the heart of Melbourne city and walking distance to Southern Cross Station as well as having a tram stop on the front door.
The staff were really helpful and friendly too and the rooms were fairly clean.
My only complaint was the out of service shower on our floor. We only had 2 stalls in the men’s bathroom and with one shower out of service for the duration of our 3 day stay it was inconvenient at times.

We will pass your positive sentiment onto our staff, and it is good to hear the cleanliness of the rooms met your standards. Unfortunately, our property experience maintenance issues from time to time. We strive to have these fixed as soon as possible but sometimes we are limited by contractors and other trades people. The best point is location, if you need to go to Southern Cross early or late, it`s perfect, because it´s so close and the breakfast was good.
First floor is good, good bar and kitchen, my room was third floor, just 3 shower and 3 toilets, there are few, because there are a lot of room, about bed was uncomfortable, cleanliness really bad. I just recommend this backpacker if you need to stay close to Southern Cross otherwise you look for another one.

I was in Melbourne for a conference in the Convention Centre a short walk away, and a private room with ensuite bathroom here was cheaper than any of the conference hotels. It isn't a full-service hotel, of course, and I had a stunning view of the wall a few feet from my window, but all that I needed was a place to sleep, with decent wifi. And the bar was useful at the end of the day, too!

My reviews are all honest and I have to say this is really good value for money. At first I was thinking it might be dirty or noisy but in fact it was very clean and quiet. It was very spacious and near to McDonald's, KFC, and Southern Cross Station. The tram station was just opposite the accommodation. It had multiple convenience stores to the left and the right. This is a really amazing place.

We stayed here in June. Staff were great, really friendly. We stayed in the basic private room which was nice and clean. There is construction on at the moment (as per their website) but only noisy during the day so no problems at night. Room is a bit cold but was warm enough overnight with extra blankets. Breakfast was good and filling. Really great location, very easy to get around Melbourne. Thanks!

Perfect location and venue to stay for a bucks party hens night or just a weekend away with some friends. I've stayed here with friends twice now and both times, it's served our purpose well. It is extremely Central to the city and walking distance to everywhere. The windows could do with a clean, but otherwise it's a fantastic spot. I'll be back next year for sure.

Hi there - both these hostels are city centre, urban hostels so you are highly unlikely to see any lizards inside the buildings - they generally like to stay outside under rocks! But this Australia - wherever you go, you'll likely encounter flies, mozzies and the odd cockroach. We have very interesting wildlife - it's all part of the experience. They won't bother you at all.
Choose the hostel that suits your interests best - Central is right in the heart of the city with the free tram outside, and five minutes from the airport bus stop. It is a busy spot. Metro is in the cool suburb of North Melbourne with great city views from the rooftop. A little further to walk to the city centre but more laidback.
Look forward to seeing you - come and join in one of the regular guest activities.
Hi Deb - unfortunately this hostel doesn't have any onsite parking as it is located right in the city centre. You would need to look at local commercial car parks. Alternatively, you could enquire at our sister hostel, Melbourne Metro, which has onsite car park spots and on street parking.
Hi Adeline,
We have fans in our 3 bed dorms, but no air con. We have air con all throughout the ground floor, plus free Wi-Fi down there, so you can keep up to date with friends and family while keeping cool.
Hope to see you soon!
Hi Dayle
All private rooms have towels provided. Guests in multi share rooms need to either bring their own towel, or can hire one at reception for a small charge.
Looking forward to having you to stay soon.
