Australia's first dedicated art hotel stands proudly on Hobart's glorious waterfront. A handsome row of historic warehouses dating from the 1820s (the former IXL jam factory) have been creatively transformed into an enthralling multi-award winning first class hotel. The hotel itself is a work of art. Here you'll be fascinated by the unexpected combination of the antique and the ultra modern.

We arrived at 10am. for a 2.00pm check in, expecting to leave our baggage and wait. The Concierge Tim ( or was it Jim ) Clark said he could give us a room straight away, but it wasn't as good as the one he had allocated for us. We decided to take the hire Car back and come back later, so he said he would arrange an immediate housekeeping of our intended room. When we did return, the room was ready. It was No. 113 overlooking the waterfront. The room was huge, as was the bed. The bathroom seemed to go on for ever and the whole package just fitted together well. There was a little dust around, but with rough stone walls and open beams above, that's one of the practicalities. Let's face it, 30 years ago if you walked into a hotel with rough stone walls, no ceiling covering beams and the floorboards of the room above, you'd walk out complaining that the building wasn't finished. This one is. It's quaint, quirky and comfortable, The art on the walls makes it look like a gallery, the toiletries are exceptionally good and the staff have a " can do " attitude. Once we had worked out the various light switches, all was well. We rated this as the best hotel we had experienced in Tasmania and if we return to Hobart, we'll be back here again.

We stayed here for a night in 2019, and having thoroughly enjoyed that experience decided to stay again for 2 nights as part of our recent trip to Tasmania.

The hotel is ideally located on Hobart's harbour and is full of history and character.

Check-in was quick and efficient, and it was good to be greeted as returning guests. The hotel offers complimentary valet parking, which we took advantage of, and guests cars are parked in a covered carpark directly behind the hotel. It was much appreciated to be offered free car parking in such a good and well-located hotel!

Our room was a deluxe spa room located on the first floor and was overlooking the hotel's internal atrium. The room was very spacious and very comfortably furnished and equipped, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams. The bathroom was large and luxurious, with a large spa bath and a separate walk-in shower, all contained in a modern frosted glass "pod" which contrasted well with the otherwise historic feel of the room.

The hotel had a very nice bar and lounge area, and breakfast in the restaurant was very good, with a choice of either continental breakfast or a range of cooked dishes. All of the staff we encountered were friendly, efficient and customer focussed.

This hotel building is unique, being a converted historic jam factory / warehouse, and is full of character and original artwork in rooms and public areas. The location on the waterfront is ideal for exploring Hobart, and is close to the Salamanca area with its many bars, restaurants and market.

A great choice for anyone wanting a luxurious and historic hotel in a harbour setting

We stayed here for 3 nights we were from the UK , and had communicated directly with the hotel for the booking and suggestions for trips . Before we even arrived the concierge service was extremely good with helpful suggestions for trips and car hire all of which turned out to be spot on . I would like to mention Hamish who was excellent before and during our stay , but in every respect all the staff we came in contact with were excellent . One early morning I dropped a glass in the bathroom which shattered everywhere and in minutes housekeeping were there organising clean up .
Upon our arrival we took advantage of the free history art tour , and I recommend to any visitor to do this , the tour was 1 1/2 hours and could have gone on longer , it described the art there ,the history of Tasmania and background of a19 th century English artist called Gibson a contemporary of Turner and Constable who stayed in Hobart with his three sons with many commissions many of which were flattering with respect to the actual landscapes . I am not an art buff but both my wife and I found this informative and interesting . We had light meals in the hotel , the room was spacious with a large bathroom , the hotel is on the waterfront within walking distance of the Salamanca market . Breakfast options were varied and freshly prepared no buffet , a little slow service but otherwise good
An excellent stay and worth the money

Jeff, thank you for taking the time to compose such a comprehensive review. I appreciate particularly your praise for Hamish, who continues to set a high bar for our entire team to aspire to. It is hard to resist his passion for Tasmania, and his extensive knowledge ensures a wonderful touring experience. Thanks also for your comments regarding our art and history tour. We want everyone (not just art buffs) to be able to enjoy our collection of John Glover originals, and see the influence he has had on contemporary art in Tasmania and beyond. Jeff, we loved sharing the best bits of Hobart with you, and I hope we see you again in the future. Kind regards, Greg Ball Guest and History Liaison The Henry Jones Art Hotel

Great location in Hobart for seeing the city however for us this was distinctly average for their price point. Our room which was a spa room had a strange odour on arrival and a damaged /. Dirty spa bath which had no appeal to be used! Whilst the hotel did offer for us to move rooms this could only be done on our second evening so too much like hard work.
Breakfast quality was really good and I felt worth the money but overall lacked the finish of a five star hotel- no water in rooms,
Limited attention to detail of turndown service, not the best linens / comfiest beds.
The location also gave some street noise and as an older property we experienced noise from the room above us.
If this was a 4 star or at a different price point we would have scored higher but we felt overpriced and under delivered .

Dear Elizabeth, I am sorry that the spa in your room was not perfectly presented at the time of your arrival, I can certainly understand your disappointment. The suggestions you have made here and within your survey response have been discussed and we will seek to remedy any issues as quickly as possible. I appreciate your praise about the quality of breakfast and of April who was able to assist with some of your concerns. Elizabeth, once again apologies that we didn't quite give you the perfect stay in Hobart first time around. I hope if you find yourself in this part of the world again you will give us an opportunity to make it up to you. Kind regards, Greg Ball Guest and History Liaison greg.ball@thehenryjones.com

1. Choose a room facing the harbor- it is beautiful and surprisingly quiet. The room was really comfortable, combining old with new design.
2. Easy walking distance to restaurants but don't overlook the restaurants in the hotel, Fabulous food. Local oysters are probably the best I have ever had.
3. Although the bar is very small, the bartenders are world class. Masters at making great/complicated cocktails.
4. If you are traveling for any period of time, you will welcome the washer and dryer on the second floor.

Dear Mixedreviews, Thank you for sharing your tips and experiences for future visitors to The Henry Jones. I concur with you on each. 1. We enjoy a central, yet insulated location right on Sullivan's Cove, near enough to Hobart's renowned food and wine, yet not overly disturbed by late-night foot traffic. 2. Landscape and Peacock & Jones feature a wonderful mix of Australian and Mediterranean delights for those that don't wish to wander too far after a long day of travelling or exploring. And yes, the oysters alone are worth a trip to Hobart. 3. Patrick and his team of alchemists enjoy a challenge and like nothing more than to experiment in their down-time. With the abundance of quality botanicals, spirits and beers available in Tasmania, they are well-positioned to craft classics, and innovate, to satisfy the most discerning tastebuds. 4. Indeed, time away from the grind is the aim of any traveller, but we are conscious that some of the practical necessities still need to be catered for. An in-house laundry is one of many conveniences that our pragmatic concierge team can assist with. Thank you again for your review. Safe travels in the future. A dockside location and valet parking when you arrive, we had a harbour view room which was very well equipped. Every room is slightly different and has different original art. Don't miss the free art and history tour with a glass of bubbly which brings the place to life. Our guide was fascinating as she explained what was going on. We had an early start for one of our day tours but there was no problem getting access to the breakfast buffet early. Every member of staff we interacted with was friendly and helpful. Great hotel.

This was one stay on our journey around Tasmania that set the standard. This is a hotel that offers so much more with its generous assortment of places to eat and drink, the art on display and the art tour and its location. The rooms are generous with space and amenities and the staff are so willing to offer their assistance to make your stay just that bit more pleasurable. The location to the quay and Salamanca Place just an added bonus to do the tourist things at a liesurely pace or just to find a place to sit relax and watch the world go by. Highly recommend.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights in a Deluxe Spa Room at approximately $300 US per night. We liked the hotel but felt it was overpriced.

On the plus side, the front desk personnel were top notch. They also provide free valet parking which was a nice surprise.

The room was reasonably large and well appointed but had a few quirks. E.g. there were no nightstands by the beds. A pillar partially blocked your ability to watch tv from bed. Also, they don’t provide free bottled water.

Our rate did not include breakfast but we ate there one morning. The food and service were very good but the price ($A30-$A35 each) was approximately double compared to nearby places for similar quality.

The best feature of the hotel is its location. It’s within waking distance of some tourist attractions and lots of bars and restaurants. We liked the following nearby restaurants: Hobart Brewing (beer + food trucks), Frank Restaurant, Society Salamanca (cocktails) and Lower Mures (breakfast).

I understand why many people rate the hotel highly. I will likely shop around for a better value on my next trip to Hobart however.

Having stayed in many hotels all for leisure, there was something about this hotel that I think has this one on top of my list of favourites. Maybe it was our room, the staff, the location, the venue itself. OK mostly the venue and IXL history! And definitely the team that took amazing care of us, going above expectations with nice surprises from the smallest bit of help to absolutely unexpected extras. Ultra clean room that was well maintained, loads of space, great shower, excellent toiletries, very quiet especially considering the harbour out front and for me who’s not in to art, it was great to see the creations throughout the hotel and captured history of the venue. Highly recommended, will most definitely return maybe sooner than later! Where's that annual leave form again...

I have to agree that it's a bit pricey, however this place is extremely unique, quaint, full of character, and centrally located. You really don't need a car until you are ready to explore the surrounding countryside. We had a studio loft this trip and while it was lovely, would probably opt for a different room if we come again. It's just a personal opinion, but we got tired of going up and down the stairs especially since the bathroom was on the bottom level. This might not be an issue with other folks. Breakfast was good, well prepared, fresh and plentiful. One tip is to get it included with your room when you book as it is fairly expensive on a day to day basis. The staff was extremely helpful and willing to help in anyway. Do take the art tour they offer. It was very nice. Highly recommend especially for special occasions.
