Was admittedly a little sceptical of some of the reviews of this place but will say now that it was above and beyond my expectations! Upon arrival (1 hour before check in) we were given the keys to one of the 2 apartments we had booked. Very smooth, friendly and welcoming check in with the property managers. Proceeded to the apartment and was very surprised to see a spacious, well equipped apartment perfect for us (we have 5 yr old & 18 month old) within 40 mins the other apartment was ready next door for my elderly grandparents and it was even better than ours!
We have been to the Gold Coast many times before but this is without a doubt the most reasonably priced and value for money property we stayed at - the pool, spa and BBQ area are fantastic and we loved having early morning & late afternoon swims!!

Some of the other reviews stated they were disappointed with the lack of dishwasher, washing up etc supplies - this is most common in all of the self contained places we usually stay - you get 1 days worth or maybe 2 if you split it and thats it - noting this I always pack a few dishwasher tablets, and washing powder with me in my case for such reasons - no real hassle if you need to do extra loads and most people can take from home.

As we were travelling as a family for business & leisure we also took my grandparents along, I did a Coles online order before hand and opted to pick up from Coles Express after the allocated check in time - I had no idea when booking that the Coles Express click & collect is literally 200m from the complex which was fantastic - again something that people can do beforehand if travelling with children to save trudging to the shops when you arrive with tired kids or oldies or both in our case :)

Only downside I can say is the lack of a lift - which we were fully aware of and wasn't an issue until I booked last minute for my grandparents to come. The resort was fantastic and managed to get them an apartment at the last minute and moved things around to give us side by side ones so it was much appreciated, but if you aren't comfortable with stairs request a ground floor apartments.

$5 charge for pool towels - while I understand why they have got this in place it was a little steep for us to pay $30 for 6 towels upfront - we have never paid this before in any accommodation anywhere in the world, I would be more inclined to make guests sign for them upon check in for the duration of the stay - if they don't return them then charge the credit card upon check out so you are not losing out = that would be my suggestion with that one but is wasn't a deal breaker for us just something I wanted to point out.

Aircon in all apartments - we understand the apartments are owned by different owners but I think this would be a welcomed & positive investment especially for those visiting that are from interstate/overseas and not accustomed to the QLD weather - saying that we managed with the fans but it did get quite hot while cooking etc in the apartment but we managed - just something to be mindful of if you do decide to book one without zircon (we had one with and one without - gave the one with to my grandparents who are here from Scotland - they most defiantly needed it lol)

Other than that we were very impressed and happy with our stay at Santana and wouldn't hesitate to return again - my grandparents especially had the most amazing time and the pool was a very welcomed surprise for them - they spent a long time in there!

Thanks again for a lovely stay!

We were looking forward to our return visit - having stayed at this complex two years ago. Facilities still remained the same - i.e. fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities within our unit etc. While the apartment was clean, we were a little disappointed that the decor was not as good as last time - i.e. starting to look a little shabby, and in need of a redecoration - bathroom tiles no longer in the great condition of two years ago. Internet facility was down most of the week we were there due to being struck by lightning a few days earlier. Managers were very pleasant and very helpful. This facility is very peaceful and relaxing - and having one bedroom apartments seems to mainly attract couples. Lovely outdoor area - lots of lush greenery, a well-utlised barbecue area, along with an outdoor spa pool, and a swimming pool. Very private - off the main highway - and there are the Cascade Gardens at the end of the street, where you can walk along a riverbank, feed ducks, and enjoy the outdoors away from the busyness of the more tourist orientated parts of the Gold Coast. We would definitely return, however we hope the owners do redecorate the apartments in the near future - it had lost the shine of two years ago.

My wife and I recently spent seven days in Gold Coast staying at Santana. Every day we were out and about doing this, that and the next thing. Santana's location is perfect for catching not only the Theme Park buses, but buses in general. Public transport actually seems to function well in Australia (read: There is actually a public transport system), which is very strange for people coming from NZ!

The owners were both awesome! They were always there to have a chat and a laugh, but they were never in your face. It wasn't as though you were constantly being supervised, badgered, and observed and treated like little children who might be a little too drunk to run around the pool without causing an awful mess when you inevitably slip and split your skull. They treated you like decent people, and we couldn't have asked for more. They made great suggestions for sight-seeing, and also made the booking process for different tours very easy.

The room was fully self-contained with laundry facilities in the bathroom, which made life much simpler. There are really only so many times you can wear your lucky boxers before they turn people away from across the street, regardless of how much cologne you may have bathed in. The bedroom had a decent bed, and the air-con and overhead fan were a lot of help during the nights. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dish washer, which is great, because we weren't sure if we could rent any homeless children to do our dish washing for us whilst abroad.

The games/Internet room looked like fun, but in truth we only used it a few times to send some E-Mails, and download pictures which might have gotten us into trouble had we used our own IP Address. After that we'd leave. Having said that, the pool table, table tennis, ping-pong and arcade games looked fun. Though that wasn't what this holiday was about. This was a time for heavy drinking, mind-numbing oggling and snorkling.

The heated pool and adjoining spa were absolutely brilliant! We spent a lot of time in there. It became something of a communal hub for meeting people (those that wanted to actually meet other people, that is), and that made it all a lot more fun. I suppose the only gripe I have with the holiday is that we couldn't rent a taser to fend off all those annoying "Party Tour" people *cough* Plan B *cough* who accosted you on every other corner, trying to sell you deals to the local night life before they (for legal reasons I will add) may potentially drug you, steal your kidneys and possibly sell your image to some porn site. They were easily the biggest turn off on our trip.

But, I digress, Santana was an awesome stay. An absolutely great place with wonderful people. The next time we go to Gold Coast we'll be staying there again!

No-one was at reception or in the office. We were given two single beds positioned together instead of a queen bed even though we requested a queen bed. The stairwell and parts of the apartment smells of urine, most likely due to the old carpet. Management should remove all carpet, especially in high traffic areas to get rid of the stench. The washing machine was old, broken and leaked water out onto the bathroom floor. Could not wash my clothes and had to mop it all up on our last day. The sofa bed was uneven and not very comfortable for the kids. The welcome information guide needs to be updated. The apartments needs a renovation.

On the positive side, the resort had a nice tropical facade. The apartment had clean bedding, linen, towels, cooking utensils, air conditioning, secure parking, free internet, foxtel, spa and swimming pool. Location was not too bad in between surfers paradise and broadbeach. The beds were comfortable but having two single beds instead of a queen was not ideal.

First of all we arrived and the property wanted a $200 bond for the a key - that was a surprise. Then when we arrived there was bodily fluid on the bedspread along with black curly pubic hairs everywhere around the unit. The floors were very sticky and we had to wear socks to ensure we did not stick to the floor. The bathroom was in a state of disrepair and we felt we had to wash everything before use. Also there was no airconditioning available in the rooms.

I booked the hotel for 5 nights. On the arrival at 13:45 whatever seemed to be the reception was completely shut and only the after hours phone was working(mind you the website tells you that check in is after 2:00). We waited for 20 mins for anyone to bother coming out and when the manager did come out his first words were that my credit card declined!!! Policy states that cards will only be charged upon arrival in presence of the cardholder!!! By looking at the outside which totally didn't look like what we booked we have asked the manager to show us the room before we pay so there is no issue with refunding and so on. So with absolute disgust on his face we ran up to the room and said if u like it take it or get out (assuming that We have already paid for the first night when we booked the place). By having a look at the room we have realised that the inside of the "hotel" is even further away from the picture than the outside. And the fact that manager wouldn't do anything but raise his voice at us made the whole thing even more unpleasant and difficult to work around with. We have asked the manager if for ADDITIONAL COST we could book another room but with air conditioner. His reply was rude and abrupt that he is fully booked and quiet frankly we are wasting his time as apparently it was his day off( well how are we supposed to get in?!) so he locked the room took the key and with screams of how we wasted his time, disappeared. Leaving us outside without a key or a refund. After a while of ringing the after hours phone they got his wife-also a manager- to come out. Who was way more respectful and at least tried to help. She agreed to give us a refund for the first night minus $30 for inconvenience to which we agreed to. Just when she was going to refund us her husband who was hiding all the while behind the door ran out to stop her. He was rude and his hand and body language was harassing and intimidating. Obviously with this kind of host living in the same place I didn't want to stay there for any price of room condition. No matter how much my partner would tell him to calm down and just try to find a resolution he would keep yelling at us and tell us that we have booked something and we should be thankful we lost $80 and not the whole amount. Overall we have spend almost 2 hrs in there without any result coming our way but accusations of our credit card declining(simply because it has been lost and replaced!) and shouts and rude body language clearly telling us to buzz off and let them keep the money and not give us the room!

Long story a bit shorter,we had to call booking.com who helped us find another accommodation and promised to deal with the hotel and get our money back.

If you want to enjoy your holiday in GC DO NOT GO TO THAT DISGUSTING PLACE THEY CALL HOTEL. it's not enough to be called a motel and assuming the service- backpackers.

Save yourselves some time and nerves and don't go there.

Now dear manager, I am sure you have a lot to say so please give us your rubbish about cancellation policy and so on. It's not like we didn't show up or wanted to cancel because we decided to get something else. Your service and harassing behaviour scared us away and made us feel intimidated to stay in the place.

Response from santanasurfers, Manager at Santana Holiday Resort Apartments
Responded 22 Dec 2014
Reviews of this nature are disappointing and we are sorry that our hotel did not meet your expectations. The pictures on the website are true and do depict the real vision of the hotel but from the very start not having money on a card and then wanting to see a room is general practice for guests that generally want more than what they pay for and are not committing to the terms and conditions of the booking process. You didn’t want to stay in the econ room and wanted to scam us in letting you get a upgrade, during a very busy week in Surfers Paradise like you did in twice in Brisbane as you told us. We should have reported your credit card declined from the beginning to booking.com and failure to provide a new credit card would have resulted in cancellation so we have changed our afterhours requirements based on this experience .Just to put it into prospective for other future guests when we hold a room in good faith on behalf of an owner we assume that guest turn up, pay and stay .The amount paid was $79 to hold this room for 5 days this prevents anybody else from booking thus keeping the room for your arrival. When you arrived the after- hours service was told to call us so we can see you before the keys were given out as we did not have a valid credit card and the room needed to be paid prior to arrival. This is generally a quick and easy process and as we emailed you with no response we gave you the opportunity to pay after hours. Then you asked to see the room before you paid and after seeing it you wanted us to upgrade you when we are booked out. Let me also say you paid $395 for 5 days .The economy room you booked is what was reserved it is our economy rate for guests who have a low budget. Staying in Australia’s number 1 holiday destination the price was exceptionally good for this time of year. Champagne taste on a Beer budget , and then you proceed to tell us that two hotels in Brisbane up-graded you without a blink of an eye and that you have travelled and others have also up-graded you. Says a lot really. We did not fold and give in as other hotels did for you as the owner of the apartment should not be disadvantaged for this, they have lost income and we certainly believe rewarded behaviour is repeated.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We were certainly surprised to read your review as so many guests have so many positive things to say about Santana Resort. We do advise guests not to leave windows and doors open .We have cameras everywhere and signs in the rooms and we advise guests at check-in. Unfortunately robberies do happen in Australia. As the police quickly attained there was no forced entry. In 5 years we have had only two robberies and both times guests left either a window or a door open. Santana Resort is a safe and peaceful environment however these things can happen if you fail to adhere to our advise. We were more than happy to give you money to assist you whilst you were here to help you out. We also allowed you free phone calls during your time here to help you locate the necessary companies to cancel credit cards etc. We spent 4 hours in total trying to assist you where possible, we did what we could but overall the door was open, so yes it was a terrible experience for you however it could have been prevented by securing your apartment.

Firstly, the office isn't open past 12pm on weekends, but you can't check in til 1pm so you have to use the after hours phone, which doesn't work. The guy who eventually came out couldn't tell us where our car park was underneath and it took about 20mins of fumbling around to check in. There's no aircon for anyone booking on Wotif, even though we had only searched for rooms with aircon. We rang the only number provided to ask to change to a room with aircon and find out where our car park was, but the lady on the phone didn't know because she was "just the after hours staff". The only fan in the room sounded like a plane taking off and the only balcony door to the bedroom had no flyscreen, so we slept with no air flow and ended up leaving by 9am coz it was too hot to sleep.
The room stinks and there are stains on the pillows and carpet. If you don't take your rubbish to the bins in the car parks they'll charge you for it. The pool looked like it hadn't had chemicals in it for months. The water in the shower could only be freezing cold or boiling hot, so we had to have 2 second showers. There was no new appliances, fittings or decor and you can clearly tell that the apartments are poorly cared for. This is not a case of "you get what you pay for" because for $150 i expect clean sheets, functioning doors and fans and the aircon I requested. Never staying here again.
