The purpose of my trip to Cairns was to get out to the Great Barrier Reef. I didn't really care where I stayed but wanted something safe and affordable. Read lots of reviews on this place and it always seemed to be a party hotel. In all honesty, there is always something to do at this hotel but if you just need a quick stopover before heading out to GBR, this is the place. I opted to get a private room and it was exactly what I needed. Nothing fancy but very comfortable. The location is convenient to lots of shops, restaurants, and the docks where most boats depart for GBR. Even if I had stayed for longer than I did, I would have still chosen to stay here. Great place to stay and affordable for the area.

Thanks so much for taking time to leave a review here for us and fellow travellers. Gilligan's is built over four floors and aim to cater to everyones needs with various types of en-suite dorms or hotel rooms. For anyone like yourself wanting to visit one of the many surrounding attractions we would recommend to book a private hotel room, like yourself, or a bed in one of our deluxe, en-suite dorm-style rooms. There's so much to do at Gilligan's, but only if you want to get amongst it, otherwise there are plenty of spaces to just hang out and chill.

We stayed in two private rooms, the rooms were basic which we didn’t mind however our room smelt like mould/ mildew! The aircon is directly above the bed and you could see the mould and grime in it! Reception were helpful and welcoming! Would be a great spot for young people however we came across some younger back packers that also complained of the noise from the night club below! We couldn’t hear noise from our room a few floors up but it does seem to be well known for a party atmosphere and quite noisy. So if you want to get rest go elsewhere.. if you want to party in the heart of Cairns it’s perfect! It’s in a great location, walking distance to amazing restaurants and shops! We were there to do a scuba dive course so didn’t spend much time in the hostel itself! It was for sleeping only! It was affordable, but musty! There’s a kebab shop across the road for midnight feasts (huge kebabs) and Fettas the Greek restaurant a few doors down, amazing food and a must visit! Would recommend for those on a budget but beware of the musty aircon and a potentially noisey stay.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review for our travel community. Some useful tips however, also a little misleading as you comment, "We couldn’t hear noise from our room" but then go on to advise guests to stay elsewhere if they want to rest. After coming out of the pandemic we ask that people are mindful when leaving reviews and remember they can be potentially damaging to businesses that have been lucky to survive the last 2 years. I am sure this was not your intention.

This place is just shocking..... the hotel side. Damp rooms, the air cons smells. Never again.

If you stay a minute in your room after checkout they will charge you because apparently someone’s just waiting outside your room, without knocking.

The bar area is good for a night out and laugh, but don’t stay in the hostel. It’s like a prison.

The location is dead centre cairns city, the 4 bed dorm is good for a group. The kitchen on level 4 is lovely, although some other quests do not clean up after themselves. The pool is lovely & you can get discounts on food and drink in the bar.
The the aircon in the room cannot be controlled, we had to sleep in hoodies because it was so cold in the room.
There is then NO aircon in the communal areas, making it incredibly uncomfortable to cook or relax. There is not clothes horse for drying clothes. The music that plays every night until 3am can we heard in every room in the hostel! One of the bar waitresses was very rude, pass-remarkable, made personal comments (weight/clothing) and poorly mannered in general.

Me and my cousin have been backpacking Australia for the past 3 months and Cairns was our last stop. We stayed in Gillian’s for 3 nights. Overall, check-in was easy and the whole hostel was very big compared to some of the other ones we had stayed in. The kitchen was very clean too which is always a bonus. We stayed in a 6 bed female dorm with an en-suite so i’m not sure what the communal toilets were like. There was also a dressing room opposite our room with hairdryers and mirrors however it was closed the whole time we were there. There is a bar connected to the hostel which is a great way to meet people if you are solo travelling and you also get free entry as you are staying in the hostel. The bar also has different events on each night which is good fun. However, I would not recommend this hostel if you are not looking to go out in the night regularly as you can hear the music from the bar from some of the rooms throughout the evening.

(4 girl dorm) You pay the price of a normal hostel but get a big hotelroom with your own shower and toilet, and also a big balcony! Basically the only difference from a hotel is that you share room with 3 other people. Oh and the breakfast isn’t the best. But apart from that, nothing to complain about.

Air conditioned hostel with spacious rooms which had a very tiny safe for each person in the room so at least you could lock away your important items. One toilet and one shower for 8 people got annoying but at least it was clean.

The kitchens were a mess constantly almost as if they didn’t get cleaned at the end of the day. Thankfully there was enough fridge space but for the entire floor there was not enough appliances etc for people to do cooking, so you either needed to eat really early or really late around tea time.

I wasn’t prepared for how much of a party hostel this was until every night there was issues outside my room from screaming and shouting through the night to security actually having to deal with issues in the room right opposite which I’m sure after they left a fight broke out.

In the bar are where they serve food, there was a constant smell of sick and I was there for 5 nights and the smell was lingering for that entire duration.

Pool area was lively with great music constantly and the bar had a great range of drinks to offer.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We're pleased that you found our hostel rooms spacious and appreciated the added security provided by the personal safes. Maintaining a clean environment is important to us, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the shared facilities. While our kitchens are cleaned three times a day, we encourage guests to be considerate of others and to tidy up after themselves when using these communal spaces. Additionally, we have multiple stove tops available on each floor to accommodate our guests' cooking needs. We understand that dinner time can be busy, and it might be worth checking if other floors are less crowded during those hours. We're sorry to hear about the noise disturbances outside your room. Please know that we have a contracted security team on site to assist with any concerns you may have, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all our guests. We're delighted that you enjoyed the lively atmosphere at the pool area and the variety of drinks available at the bar. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back for a more enjoyable experience in the future.

I was super excited to stay at Gilligans after hearing great things about Cairns.

The hostel was clean and felt spacious. I was in an 8 bed room and I felt like we had plenty of space. The only thing was that there wasn’t a lot of locker space. I was staying in a room with people I knew and had been travelling the east coast with so I felt fine leaving my stuff unlocked but otherwise I would have felt abit uneasy. The social areas were clean and the pool/bar downstairs was great.

There was alot of noise in the hostel constantly. We could hear music from downstairs until 3/3:30am and it started again at 9am every night we were there. I didn’t mind because we knew gilligans for being a party hostel, but after 4 nights of this I was ready to leave and go somewhere quieter. I didn’t find it to be as sociable as other hostels as everyone seemed to be in groups and stuck to them. I was in a group so didn’t mind this too much but I think as a solo traveller I may have felt a little intimidated.

In all honesty I didn’t rate the staff. I thought the majority were quite rude (especially the female security guard and the bouncers for the club). I felt quite intimidated by them and the security guard came in to our room a few times unannounced to check for alcohol which none of us had in our bags anyway, and I haven’t experienced this in any other hostels up the east coast.

One of my friends was staying in Bounce just down the road and seemed to have a much more pleasant experience. I think I would probably look to stay elsewhere if I visited cairns again. Gilligans was okay but wouldn’t want to stay again if I didn’t have to.

The place is alright if staying there only for a couple nights. Just a few things they could be more observative of is the amount of noise in the common rooms in the night, especially on floor 1. Rumors says that floor 4 is better. The dorms for 8 people are to small for 8 people living in there when several of them are staying for a longer period. The air-conditioning apparently do not work in all rooms and the toilets and bathroom was poorly cleaned everyday. The last thing I want to point out is the girl security guard at the desk checking people's room key was so rude to the guests. If you know you are only sleeping at Gilligan's the place is alright other than that buy a private room or find somewhere else

Just to clarify, they don't let you know it's a party hostel and they don't let you know you have the cheap rooms. Booked a 3month trip down the east coast, this was one of the places the travel guide chose for us, so all the negative replies are not needed. You don't get a "what to really expect, for the price you pay at Gilligans" broacher, especially if your paying a lump sum amount for your whole trip. I used headphones and ear plugs because I wasn't traveling alone and didn't want to segregate myself from friends. But if they turned it down a bit and reduced the base, it wouldn't make a difference to anyone partying, unless of course their DJ is rubbish, but it's pretty empty most of the time, when I was there everyone was sitting outside.
