Location is very central, room was clean but seriously needs some work done especially in the bathroom as the chipboard cupboard doors need 2 hands to open and close. Shower is strange with the taps actually outside the shower so with the shower curtain that bit short there is a definite problem with the water outside the shower recess. General room was clean and tidy with a King Bed & single bed in our room. Unfortunately the first night the neighbours were excessively loud with people running up and down the hallways most of the night making sleep and optional extra that we didn't get much of. Air-con seemed to work early in the night but during the night could get quite hot and stuffy in the room. There was free WIFI that was ok to use most of the time. Linen was clean but seriously the towels were a disgrace (see pictures below) Towels actually had holes in them and were painfully thin with threads on them everywhere. Price was cheap so weren't expecting much and had the towels been of a better standard would have been ok with it all. We paid for on-site car-parking which made us feel more secure. Didn't try the swimming pool as it didn't look appealing as we went past. Also didn't try their breakfast bar for $10 as there is so many options within easy walking distance especially on the weekend definitely try Rusty's Markets. History of hotel is great and worth a read of photos on display. Staff were generally friendly

Gday SteveGee63, Thanks for leaving a review of Hides Hotel Cairns. I have passed on your comments to our Management so we can see how we can make some improvements around the hotel, both immediate and longer term goals we can work towards. We are currently in the process of upgrading our linen, please rest assured we agree that the towels were not up to standard for your stay. The Hides Hotel Cairns has a longstanding history in Cairns, and did you know - the original Hides Hotel was initially a 20 room hotel, owned by George Parker Hides and Duncan McColl! The hotel was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Thanks again for your review - we hope you will notice improvements during your next stay with us! Best wishes and safe travels, Amy Davis Sales Manager

I stayed here with my friend for her 60th as we had an event to go to at another local hotel.
For one of the oldest hotels in Cairns it is a real shame it hasnt got Heritage funds to do up the original hotel bedrooms and common areas. The original veranda area is superb.
We had room 217 which is in the newer section.
The room itself was large and inviting with a king bed and a single bed, fridge, TV, wardrobe and coffee/tea making facilities. The bathroom was dated and a bit strange as the taps to the shower were to the outside of the shower!
Another negative for the room was the frosted window. OK, it might not have a view but one does like to look out of a window, even if its at a brick wall. You couldnt even open the window!!
The newer part of the hotel was very dated in the common areas. Think 70's and youve got it right.
The pool was great if a little shabby.
Parking in the hotel area cost me $10. There are limited spaces so if you know you need a space then be sure to book.
The receptionist was very friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble.
Finally, the breakfast that was included in the price was a cold buffet with cereal, fruit, toast/bread, cold and hot drinks. I personally couldnt fault it.

Gday Michelle S, and thanks for leaving a review of Hides Hotel Cairns. We are hopeful the decor style of the 1970's may soon enough be coming back into vogue. We do our best to work with the canvas we have, and our team are dedicated to reinvigorating what it means to offer 'old fashioned' hospitality in the modern day! We will let you in on a secret - we are beginning works on our first of the Heritage Rooms tomorrow!! It is an absolute honour to have the opportunity to give our best effort to gracefully restore a real gem. This may be a bit of a lengthy process but we are excited to show you what the end result is when we are finished - watch this space! Best wishes and we hope to see you again soon, Amy Davis Sales Manager

The hotel is very nicely located, just across from it you can find a supermarket and liquor store, in the same street are smalls restaurants (very cheap) and some other stores, just about 100 mts from hotel there is a bar with a nice outdoor area. The bus stop is a short 5 min walk. And just walk another 10 to 15 min and you'll find more bars, shops, and restaurants. The hotel is cleaned every day, it has TV and air conditioning that works just find, they also have a laundry room. The people at the front desk are very friendly and helpful, they will book taxis, transfers, or tours. The only down and maybe is just for you to be aware, is that there is a big hostel in front of hotel, and they are loud, I mean they party every night until 3 am. Maybe because it was the holidays, but is loud, so I recommend you request a room in the back or in the other side of hotel not in from of Lake St.

We stayed 8 nights and room on second floor was very clean, comfortable and well worth the budget price.
Woolworths only over the road. Close to everything in Cairns city including lagoon area for swim.
Staff were amazing and would do everything they can to help us.
We hired a car for 5 nights and booked a parking spot for $10 a day. Well worth it.
Definitely a great hotel to stay in and we will stay again👍

I find the hotel staff very accommodating and friendly too. The receptionist gave me a very helpful advice, like where to ride a bus and where's the location of the nearest supermarket. The Hotel room is also clean. They also serve breakfast daily for a minimal fee.

I’ve stayed here several times now and for the price, you won’t find a better location or room in Cairns. To alleviate the persistent noise that is omnipresent in Cairns CBD at night, stay on an odd numbered room on the second floor. My favourite is #209. There is a king bed, single bed, good bar fridge, massive TV, good air conditioning & a very powerful ceiling fan. The boys at front desk, most notably Jaymon and John were professional and helpful- always with a smile. The housekeeping team work their asses off so I just get clean towels each day and empty my garbage but leave the Do Not Disturb sign up and give them one less room to have to clean. Coin laundry down the hall was helpful once too. Woolworths is directly across the street and the Esplanade’s pool, galleries, etc are all within a stones throw. Hotel rooms in Cairns are way overpriced so do yourself a favour and stay here. Great value. Safe, clean and quiet in Room 209. Don’t expect a view or a balcony but otherwise, it ticks all of the boxes for a short or mid length stay.

We stayed at the Hides for a quick NYE getaway knowing we wouldn’t be spending much time in the room. The location is 100% right in the middle of town and easily accessible to anywhere you’d want to go. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the beds seemed new and extremely comfortable! The only critique would be the cockroaches, we felt they were coming out of everywhere which was a tad off putting but also understand can’t always be helped. Apart from that we had a great stay and would recommend for the budget warey who won’t be spending any time in the rooms!

I didn't expect much with the price and upon arriving there were homeless on the street conveying a sense of discomfort and doubt. The staff I interacted with at first seemed to be unaware of the booking, so doubt ensued.
After grabbing some drinks and approaching the balcony after resting our items in the room, I discovered the true gem of Hides hotel. The view.
It was as if a theatrical show had been put on in our honour with BYO drinks. The location happened to overlook the true theatre of Cairns in what seemed to portray the true sense of northern Queensland and it's inhabitants.
I met interesting people there and was able to access all the amenities of Cairns within walking distance.
Don't overlook the cheapness of this place, after a night on the balcony you realise the true brilliance of Hides hotel.

This was the first time ever I have had a verbal altercation at a hotel with a staff member at a hotel due to service issues. The front clerk would not allow my bags (one suitcase and a laptop) to be left after check out without paying for lockers, despite a $175 a night room charge and an empty storage area. He said this was common hotel practice. I challenged him & explained most hotels allow bags to be kept for a few hours after checking out – after this the desk man changed his tune and said this was just their hotel’s policy. I felt like I was staying at a backpackers and was very disappointed at the policy, and at the service.

The experience I had on check out alone (especially the attitude of the staff member) made this easily the worst experience I have had at a hotel in the last 10 years. It was a shame because the gentleman on check in was lovely and allowed bags to be stored prior to check in, when I arrived on an early flight. The room itself was at the opposite end of the hotel and was a 5 minute walk down a long hall to get to the room. It was also noisy at night time as I was given a room adjacent to the main street (Grafton Street).

The positives – the location is excellent (right in the centre of town) and the quality of the rooms and room size is ok.

Honestly though, my recommendation is to steer clear of this hotel - there are lots of great hotels in Cairns that are far better for the same price (or less). And I know many locals who feel the same way about this place.
